Hello guys i was shifter kart racing a few years ago, adn now i would like to get into solo1, i have a 87 scirocco gtx 2.0 16v GT30r turbo with full stand alone, 24way adjustable suspension, peloquin diff etc etc, making over 250whp on low boost setting, will i need a roll bar to participate in solo1 because of power weight 2340lbs with me (180lbs) i can crank 300hp but i think 200-250whp on road course should be enough. Any idea what class i would be in..

The other choice is a way less powerfull car, 82 mk1 jetta 4dr with 1.7 8v cam exhaust 2020lbs with me in it, also with suspension/bushing kit on it, totaly gutted with fire extinguisher.

I mostly did drag racing but im missing the twisties any help would be helpfull.

I have no idea what class you'll be in-you'll need to go thru the rules and add up the prep points for your mods.
Hopefully you won't be in sgt3:)

As you may know, Solo 1 classification works in large part on power-to-weight ratio. With a highly modified engine like your Scirocco sounds like it has, you'd need to submit a dyno plot with the engine in the exact state of tune you'll be competing in it with. This means at the exact boost level, fuel pressure level, ignition timing, etc, etc. If you change any aspect of the engine's set-up, you'd have to re-submit a new dyno plot so we can correct the classification. We then use this dyno plot to determine power-to-weight, and along with a suspension rating for the car determine it's starting class. The car would then move up the classification ladder from this starting point based on prep points declared for suspension modifications, body & trim modification, and any engine/drivetrain modifications not covered by the dyno plot.

It's impossible for me to give you a dead-on accurate classification on your Scirocco without seeing a detailed list of all modifications made to it, but based on the information you've provided I'd guesstimate it to be classified as follows:
1987 VW Scirocco - 2287 lbs (curb weight) and 123 hp.
- Starting Performance Index (PI) of 51.6%, which puts it in Touring2 class to begin with (in completely stock form). This PI is based on 70% power-to-weight and 30% suspension rating.
- Substituting 294 hp (or 250whp) for the stock horsepower rating results in a modified PI of 77.7%, putting it in GT1.
- Add to this the 7 prep points (or what we call PIPs for Performance Index Points), which covers shocks, springs and non-stock alignment as well as 1 more for the bushing kit (sounds like you have this on both your VW) and your PI goes up to 85.7%, which puts the car into SGT2. If you've upgraded the swaybars, they're 1 PIP each as well.
- Add to this any body & trim modifications you've made to the car, which can be at least partially offset by the installation of a roll bar and fire extinguisher. You could have as many as 4 PIPs in this section without being bumped up to the next class (the upper limit for SGT2 is 89.9%).

So my guess is that the car is AT LEAST in SGT2, and quite possibly in SGT1 if you've done more to the suspension than mentioned here and have made significant changes to the body & trim of the car in order to lighten it.

The '82 Jetta sedan weighs in at 2001 lbs (stock curb weight) and has 74 hp according to my source. That'd give it a starting PI of 29.7%, putting it in Touring5 to start. You'd then need to add all PIPs to this to determine what class it ends up in once all modifications are factored in. You can download the rulebook at www.soloontario.com and add up your PIPs or post a complete list of all mods here and I'll help you out with it.

Cheers,

Thanks for great info, what type of cars are in SGT2. Thanks again for your help.

In '03 the SGT2 class winner was a fairly highly modified Acura RSX Type S driven by the very talented Kenneth Lau. Other quick cars in this class include the 3rd gen RX-7 twin turbos of Andrew W and Gerry C. In '04 I think this class will have a few more cars in action, possibly including Adam's turbocharged Nissan 240SX and perhaps a modified Mustang or two. We won't know for sure until the Open House! Your Scirocco should be very competitive in this class with the kind of power-to-weight ratio we're talking about.

If your Scirocco ends up in SGT1, you'd be facing off against stock Corvette Z06's, possibly Adam's turbo 240SX, modified C4 Corvettes, and that sort of thing. If you go to www.soloontario.com you can review all the '03 class standings.
