View Full Version : how far would you go for $50 per hr dyno pulls?
The real questions is....
Would you drive 1hr north of Toronto (Alliston) to use a chassis dyno for $50 per hour?
comments? ideas?
any favourite dyno makes? and why?
any other dyno ideas?
thanks for your input...

YES, but not regularly.

Yes, as long as an O2 trace is included. Not super-often though; maybe once per year.

Is that $50/hr including the operator or is it self serve?
we've had an annual TAC dyno night for about $45 for 2 runs (much less than 1 hour) as I recall that is usually well attended.
At that price you could use it as a tuning and development tool rather than a novelty.
I'd like to see a 4wd dyno although I expect the incremental cost would be hard to justify.
it would include an operator and wide band o2 sensor..and boost sensor....no 4wd though
It would be too far to go for this guy you would have to set aside at least 1/2 a day for a couple of pulls

What is an average cost for dyno time (in Toronto)?

I believe it's in the range of $100 - $140 /hr including O2.

yes.
PS, need an operator :)
dyno time in the GTA is usually about $75/hour without a wideband 02 sensor...most shops charge a $50 hook-up fee to use the 02 sensor, but I don't think that applies hourly (at least not at the shops I've used).
Adam, I would gladly drive to Alliston to use your dyno since it's not the sort of thing I do every week. I would personally prefer a Dynapack or a Mustang dyno, rather than an inertia-style dyno like a Dynojet. I'm not a big fan of Dynojets primarily because you can't load and hold the engine at a specific rpm level like you can on a Dynapack or Mustang dyno. This really limits the value of a Dynojet as a tuning tool, IMO. If you had a Dynapack or Mustang, I'd be there regularly :) My first choice would be a Dynapack since it takes the wheel/tire package out of the equation.

Alliston is fine with me!,personally I think too many people are too lazy-won't drive an hour to support someone trying to help them?.

That may be a little risky Adam, depending on the cost of the machine.
Most places give 2 pulls for $50 to $70 It cost me last year around $70 with 02 at DPS.
OMSC usually has 3 or so dyno days a year at Dyno Power Services and there are at least 3 other places in the GTA (TAC, J&P, um can’t remember the others)
$50 for an hour does not let you do many cars in a day.
But if it pans out, I would come for an hour tuning time.
Plus would love to see your shop.
:)
he he...would it be any more risky than the money i had invested in the stock market? at least this way at the end of the day i actually have something physical to show for it :)

Adam if it was $50 an hour and you didn't charge extra for tuning time and did it on an hourly basis instead of the standard 3 pulls for your $100 hour then I would make the trip for sure. But for tunning you needs air fuel ratios Some where you got make something for your investment .

Seeing as my car is already in Alliston it's a no brainer!!
Hope this works out.
Official solo 1 rule book dyno? (maybe)

There's a shop in Kitchener that has a Dynojet that can provide a static? load but they don't have a wideband though. I've got a AEM EMS wWB so its no big deal to me, but I can get variable load tuning.

Interesting...I just had a look at Dynojet's website and they do list two 'load control' options but offer very little information about them. I think these are very new on the market. Impressive that the shop in Kitchener has one already. I'd be curious to see how it works compared to a Dynapack or Mustang.
I'll give Dynojet credit though, they are a very aggressive company when it comes to marketing (ie. their NASCAR deal) and are clearly trying hard to match the utility of the other dynos available. I'll still take a Dynapack though, since it takes the wheel & tire package out of the equation :)

Forrest and Forrest is the shop in Kitchener and the addition is called a Steady State function and they tell me it works killer. They also plan to get a wideband in the near future.
If enough people are interested in coming to Kitchener for a Dyno Day, I'll gladly arrange one.
