Hey,

I have a 2006 smart fortwo. Would like to try it at autox this summer, unfortunately, it is not allowed to run in Ottawa autox events. So, I am looking for an autox event close to Ottawa that is run under the CASC-OR rules. I know the car is an H-Stock base class, but it is highly modified. Not looking to break records (obviously), just curious to see how it handles.

Which clubs are out there to help me?!??!?!?!?

Thanks in advance.

Why can't you run it at the MCO events?

I was told the car is too unstable (Static Stability Factor too low as per SCCA rules)

In that case, I'm surprised that we have it listed in our Car Class list (Appendix A). It's also interesting to point out that it doesn't appear anywhere in the SS/SP listings.

In all honesty, you probably won't be able to run that car at an autoslalom hosted by ANY CASC-OR affiliated club.

Well, not running it in the SCCA, so their opinions should not matter. But it is allowed by the CASC-OR, so just looking for a club that uses the CASC-OR rulebook.

The following is from the CASC-OR Regs:

3.7.2 Unsuitable Vehicles
Vehicles having high centers of gravity and/or relatively narrow track may be excluded from competition. Such vehicles may include sport-utility classed light trucks, off-road vehicles, vans, or any vehicle deemed incapable of safely executing typical AutoSlalom maneuvers at speed.

This rule does not provide any guidance on how this determination should be made. An emperical method of verification should be a part of any rule in my opinion.

The SCCA require SSF no less than 1.30 and the Fortwo is rated at 1.16. (3 hundredths more than a Ford Explorer)

"The SSF is a measure that equals one half of the track width divided by the height of the center of gravity above the road." NHTSA (http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/)

This seems to me like a better approach than leaving it up to individual judgement or ignoring the risk altogether.

Regards,
Greg

Would be good, as my car sits 1.75" lower than a stock smart, and the track is 15.0 cm wider. :D Which means an SSF of 1.32, same as a Honda Fit, or better than a Toyota Matrix.

OK, now that we have finished beating THAT dead horse......

So, what clubs near Ottawa use the CASC-OR current rulebook so I can run an event?

Hi Chris,

I don't see a problem running at St.Lac events however i am not the definitive answer person....as you have pointed out, your car is suitably modified to work well within the SCCA rules regarding SSF's. We have an event at the Shannonville skidpad on Sunday if you are interested :)

Damn! Would have loved to make it there for this Sunday, except I am running at the Ottawa event this Sunday in the GF's Civic Si, while Moby the smart car watches from the sidelines. :)
