If anyone from the Brampton area is coming to the event on Sunday can you please drop me a PM if you can lend a hand? I've got a set of rims (no tires) that have to get to the event on Sunday but I don't think they'll fit in my car.

Thanks as always to everyone who came out for some fun today, before and after the rain in some cases! We've really got some crazy mofos running this series!
Just so everyone is clear, we will officially score everyone's first four runs for the day. Half the field got in five but it wouldn't be fair to those who only got in four. If you wish to protest this decision, please email Taylor.

Fun event even though I definately was not in the hunt for top spot. Too bad it had to end after the 4th run for me. I was just working on figuring out the entrance to the slalom.
Thanks to all the organizers again for putting on the event.
At least I learned a few things.
1) RS3's are going to be my next set of street tires.
2) Spec-V Rims are not built for racing now that I've seen one with 2 completely cracked through spokes. That was insane to see.
3) Teepee covers built the night before with a leftover tarp, wood trim and hinges, held together by zip ties cannot withstand more than a light gust of wind, even when strapped down.

Three cameras pointed at you. No pressure. Ryan murdered a cone something fierce on his recorded run as well.
Event was fun! I may have only gotten 4 timed runs. But the 2 I got as fun runs in the rain were wicked fun. I can't say I've ever hydroplaned on purpose before that.
I love that the cameras (nearly all 3 of them) recorded the laughs and applause after my sideways stop box entry. :D

Three cameras pointed at you. No pressure.
Oh puhleeze. :p I didn't miss the gate out of pressure. I was carrying more speed into the section than previous runs (good line/exit up at the top) and I got into the bumpy stuff under ABS and was just way too deep once the speed was off to make the turn. No brain-fart, just plain ol' driver error. Looking at the video it looks like I was too close to the single cone anyhow.
Yeah watching the video again the wheels are turned the correct direction and you can hear my tires chirping under braking, but car kept going straight over the bumps. Too hot.
There you go kiddies, sometimes fast is slow! :P
I look dreadfully slow up the right handed chute to the cross over but the external video tells me the car corners much more comparatively to what I see many Miata's capable of. Inside the car doesn't feel like how it looks around some corners. Corners feel like they take forever, and the straights feel fast.. but the video tells a different story. Go figure.

Feel free to share your thoughts on the subject. I for one firmly believe that on any warm, dry day you won't beat the 2% bonus against an A6 or v710.

i like the idea of the street bonus, i really do
as long as i keep in mind i'm racing RAW i'm fine, this last weekend i only had to cut a second.. which my car is clearly capable of, i'm just not
when i see 2 seconds though... i dont know, thats crazy :)
Taylor
08-25-2011, 02:47 PM
Whichever. Yeesh (yes it's calculated right in the software).
And I think Ryan's right, any warm day and it's a real bitch (for me anyhow) to stay ahead. Though I think if I raised the ride height up I might be able to cover the difference. But there's a notable difference between R's and the bonus based on surface conditions.
The right setup of course is R's for warm/dry and street's for cold/wet.

GOOMBA gave me Taylor's other angle. So he's lucky enough to get two. (Though my GoPro got smudged somehow)
Here's it untagged and un-named: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEoW9pC0gNk
I actually had to crop the GoPro as it had a lot of the interior captured. Oh the wonders of a fisheye lens.

Re: the course design
Surprising to hear how much everyone enjoyed the course given that many of the top times appeared to have plateaued by the third and fourth run. Maybe that's a sign of a good course? Easy enough to quickly go fast, hard enough to find those last few 1/10ths.

I thought the course flowed together really nicely! Loved it!
Taylor
08-25-2011, 04:39 PM
I always prefer to put together a course where you have a choice of line. Corners connected where you can sacrifice in one turn of the wheel to gain down the path. Obviously these allow a lot of people to second guess themselves, likely going quicker in some areas but slower in the others.
While I'm certain my line on the off course video coming around the top was the quickest line, I must have messed up a few other places to drop my raw time down so much... unless it was a 48.8 raw. :)
When you only get 4 shots at it and the first is the duster-run, there's only so much you can do with 3 laps.. one is going to be the drivers FTD.. the other two are 'attempts'.
I think usually it takes a good few runs on a course like that to figure out what works and what doesn't. 5th and 6th runs here likely would have been FTD contenders for the more experienced guys.
I'm just relieved the centre light-post gate (adjacent to the grate) wasn't nearly as cringe inducing behind the wheel than during the course walk. Also I'd still like to do an event with no slalom. Don't get me wrong, I love the slalom, but I wouldn't mind having that space to try different things with. But to pull that off someone would have to kidnap Darryl.

Awesome course! I agree with Taylor, with the current crop of cars, there are several different lines depending on what vehicle is being driven and what conditions we get. I just need to follow Derek on the course walk, and not Mike :)
I am not a fan of the street tire bonus (or PAX for similar reasons), as I don't think the 2% bonus is enough, and if we ever got really serious, it could lead to a bunch of pointless bench racing. When I ran street tires, I made a note of other cars runing street tires so I had an idea of who I would be competing with. I think ideally raw times should be posted and scored, but an "S" beside cars with street tires would help keep a perspective for the competitors who haven't taken the step to R compounds.
On the bit about only counting the first 4 runs - I'm sure my 5th run was my fastest, so I would argue that of course it should count!
And I still can't wait for next event!:D
