View Full Version : What I learned at autocross today: PITL #1

1) God is pleased with MSOC.
2) Rain is not the only reason I suck.
3) Some people do not take off-course errors well.
4) The Ford turbo 2.3L is not a good engine for, um, cars.
5) Attractive women can nearly cause paddock fatalities.
6) Riding in Paul K’s Miata is like being in a video game on fast forward and taking speed.
7) I tend to smack a lot of cones if my wheels stick out past my fenders (that’s my official excuse this week).
8) Diesel Jettas can be made to smoke like a Soviet oil refinery, and you don’t even have to light them on fire.
9) There is at least 10 kilometers of walking in a day of autocross.
10) It is easier to remember people’s car numbers than their names.

I thought there was a rule about no smoke shows? :) Maybe that's not what they meant at the drivers meeting.

Big ups to MSOC for another great event and for the powers that be for surprisingly good weather for autocross. I think I actually managed to catch some UV rays today!

11) Sunblock remember sunblock
I have slight sunburn and sore feet. Definitely signs of a good autocross. Too bad your car had some issues Simon. At least they weren't of worse nature.

Yeah... the sunburn... I didn't see that one coming!!
Even Jamie got one and she spent most of the day sleeping in our utility car.
BTW - nice course! who designed that one?

only thing I learned was that Stock Civic Seats was honda's worse mistake ... kinda on the level of the exploding ford Pinto...:p
I still hurt from that.

waking up this morning.. didn't think there would be a decent turn out.
cloudy.. looked like rain blah blah blah...
came to the conclusion that Golfers, Fisherpeople?? and coneheads all have one thing in common.
they don't give a poo what the weather looks like.. there'll still be people who show up REGARDLESS of the weather!!
We were guessing maybe 50 because of it.. boy were we wrong!!
Eric.. you should submit your "top ten" posts to grassroots motorsports
too funny.... if they don't publish them, maybe try writing for David Letterman
Great seeing new people out!! Things should have been smoother, but one of our Organizers was busy getting married.

got sun burn here too!!
What did I learn?
12) doesn't matter if I've won my class or not but having someone ran a better time in a similar car in stock class could still make me feel terrible!!
13) anything can be fast if they are on big fat Kumho!! Well anything other then Hondas, they are fast even on skinny 185 yokos!!:(

Thanks Dave! Sometimes things just write themselves, like the first couple of HADA events. It was tougher coming up with stuff this week because the weather was nice and everything did go so smoothly. Considering the size of the entry list I thought it was awesome that we were able to get six runs in and I was still home in time to catch the end of the Flames game. Good job MSOC!
P.S. That overtime goal in San Jose was one of the prettiest goals I've seen in a long time!

You would think so, wouldn't you? I was there to prove the exception to the rule. As my daddy used to say "No man is completely useless - he can always be used as a bad example.";)

Nothin' specific about your XR4TI, but the sight of it disabled at the side of the track sparked some conversations with other folks who had owned turbo 2.3s in the past, to their everlasting regret apparently.
Hope to see you up and running soon!

I hope everyone noticed that it drove away under it's own power.:D
Sure it's still got some bugs to work out but that was it first ever autoX event and the first hard drive in about 16 months.
What happened was the plastic clip that holds the plastic fuel line connector to the rail came loose.
For a 19 year old car I think it did pretty well.
It sure was fun to drive though!:D

Anytime! The only hard part is finding Marshals for that last run. I hate leaving people out for a long time.
Too bad you didn't get more runs because the course really was fun. Much faster than I thought it would be during the walk.

I think TECHNICALLY.... he did the first 3 straight parts... the "U" and I did the infield stuff to the stop-box... with some help from Finboi.

Great course guys. PITL went through some bad stretches, but with the course designed by Steve for the TAC 'last chance autocross' last year (one that should be repeated in the summer BTW), Curtis' amazing courses and yesterday's event, it's clear that Hershey Centre courses can be fast, flowing and technical even with such a small lot.
Good job guys!
BTW, is there any chance we might be able to use the 'other' Hershey lot again?

Had a great time. Being blonde you think I'd have learned by now that I can burn no matter what time of year and what time of day, if there is light, I burn. :(
I was fighting HUGE massive oversteer the entire event. First time out with the R-Comps and LSD so it seems my rear bar has to be adjusted one notch down from last year. I think I've got one of the best drift cars on the planet because no matter what I seem to do that back end wanted to come around. No worries, next event I'll try the bar at the next notch down and see what happens. Who would have thought a MINI would have an oversteer problem. LOL.
Word to the wise, if you see a MINI (any car) spinning out and heading right towards you as you're sitting on the curb, get up and MOVE!!! 44second run including a >180degree spin aint bad. LOL
Anyone know when results are usually posted online? I didn't get to see my time for my 6th run. It sucked but I'd still like to know what the time was.

Results wont be up for a while, as the webmaster (Taylor) is outta the country at the moment.
I too had a great time at the event yesterday, as I got to learn more of the "ropes" of running an event. From laying out some cones and caution taping the whole lot, to sharing the timing duties with Wes and tearing everything apart at the end of the day, its a real eye-opener to realize that there's a lot of guys who don't just show up, change tires, race, change tires, and go home.
Too bad I couldn't figure out the course dynamics until the last run!
I can't wait for the results!

good work man!
As far as PITL events go...that was one of smoothest in a long time! Funny thing too...since half of the regular organizers weren't there.
Keep up the good work guys! Thanks for a great event.

Sorry I missed that one. Looked like fun. I stopped in for a fiew minuits to watch. It was mothers day and I had obligations. One day of the year we give to our mothers and why does it have to be a race day. Couldnt they pick another day. And it was the first dry race of the year. I was hard seeing you all race and me with new rubber on and dying to try it out. Next time.

There was only one A-Mod car faster than A-Stock?
JTD got beat by DW?
There was a Fiero there?
I was faster than Butchart?
I got beat by a freakin' Scirocco?
There was a Scirocco there?
As a resident of Toronto your tax money is paying for this? (http://www3.sympatico.ca/prairiedog/myweb2/the_happy_transsexual_hooker.htm)

yea that may happen once in a while but don't bank on it and I was beat by the same Sirocco (spl?)
The scirocco guy is good so don't feel too bad! I got edged out by the "Soviet oil refinery on wheels". I need stickier tires!I feel like the odd man out in C Mod without them. Kind of like the kid who shows up for show and tell with a Coleco Vision when all the other kids got a Nintendo.

the only good part was that the rain kept the black smoke down on the ground.
have you ever seen video of your car on the course???
its crazy!!!
you vdub guys are a different breed.. there's another VDub brother overhere in ottawa that solo's a diesel bug
is it our fault that you guys have some weird fetish with competing in diesel powered cars??
what happend to your other rabbit??? THAT was a solo car
i'm still used to seeing Mike B in his wabbit
actually with all the VDubs around, there should be more of you guys giving grief to the honda/acura guys

ps, now if you had one of these diesel powered beasts.. it'd be a different story

unfortunately, Mike B's old rabbit died a painful and untimely death at the hands of it's unskilled new owner, on a highway offramp. RIP oldsCOOL rabbit. :(
My old rabbit will see daylight again someday. Maybe once the EPA bans me from autocrossing the jetta anymore. hehe

you call THAT a smoke show? Amateur! hahaaar!

All in good time. The smokescreen is just the first step. Actually the blowtorch was the first step but who's counting.
