I'm not sure who should be looking after this now, but I just got the message from Jelsoft regarding the forum software license.

The cost to renew a leased license is $85, and an annual renewal for an owned license costs $30. Presently CASC is using a leased license.

Also, I no longer have the admin password for the forum, so cannot update it to v3.01a which is the current release version of vBulletin. You can forward it to coles@kos.net if you would like me to do that.

PLEASE do NOT upgrade the software! The new version is way too bloated, and the icons and fornts are huge. Takes up way too much space, and adds useless features. Just my 2c.

I am kind of with you there. The themes can be changed, however.

Regardless, the license will expire, leaving CASC-OR with nothing if it isn't paid for. In that case, I suppose that I could change it over to FUD Forum or something of that nature.

There is also an upgrade to the 2.3.x series of the software.

Steve,
Get a hold of Steven 416-667-9500 at the office on Monday and we will get it paid for. As for upgrading, we can discuss this later.

I don't have the time to deal with the forum, etc. much anymore. It would be better if CASC interfaced directly with Jelsoft in regards to the license.

Have you guys ever considered switching to phpbb (http://phpbb.com/)? It's completely free and the best forum software I've used. It's what we use for the Atlantic Region Motor Sports (ARMS) forum: http://www.armsinc.ca/phpbb2/index.php

We have condiered it, but we're working in conjunction with KOS.NET and we'll stick with this for now. Thanks for the input, we'll keep it in mind for the future.

PHPBB is technically much less impressive, I'm afraid. It works reasonably well, but has a number of iffy designs.

I might be tempted to go to FUD Forum first, since it has support for USENET and Mailing Lists. It tends to be a little buggy on odd releases, tho.

Either way, vBulletin scales a lot farther than either of those. CASC might never need that scalability, I dunno, but it's good to know it will.
