My friend and I have got a car that's close to going on the road.. should be done in time for Galway Cavendish.. but we just hit a major roadblock that we didn't think about beforehand.. I know it's one of those things we should have thought about before we started on this whole endevor, but the simple fact is that we don't have a clue how to insure our car!!

Anyway, we're at the point where we either spend some serious dough and finish the car, or call it quits. The fact that the above decision hinges on is if we can find insurance.. or how we go about doing so. We're both 20 and the car is in my co-drivers name (that could be changed), it's an 1985 Subaru RX 4dr, and it'll be trailered to each event, and seldom driven on the road in between events.. so it makes no sense to me to get the car insured as a regular road car (also unaffordable for us), also what do you do if they come to inspect the car What is everyone else doing / what do you people suggest??

Thanks in advance!

Because the car is more than 15 years old, you should be able to insure it as a Hot Rod. There are two companies that do this I believe, but I cannot recall their names right now.....I'm sure someone else will chime in though.

I think the only restriction on the insurance is the number of KM the car can be driven each year on the street...something like 10,000 km or so. If you are trailering it 90% of the time, then that's probably a non-issue.

Almost all auto insurance policies in Ontario, regardless of the provider, the age of the car and whether it's through Facility, are the standard Ontario Automobile Policy.

The policy is online (on the Financial Services Commission of Ontario site) here: OAP 1 (http://www.fsco.gov.on.ca/FSCO_UW_MainEngine.nsf/0/e35a2fcecd9b938985256d9e005683bd/$FILE/OAP1-10-03.pdf)

You (and anyone else who wants to race a road-going car) might want to check clause 1.4.6.

I don't know if there's any way to work out a deal with an insurance company to get around this. Rallysport Ontario has an ongoing committee that's trying to deal with the insurance issue.

William,
Wow, this came out of nowhere. You can work around text in the Ontario Standard Policy regarding speed tests? While road rally and performance rally transit sections are certainly not speed tests, they have been regarded as that by the industry, as they are all timed sections on public roads, quite different from the solo/track events. Modifications notwithstanding this has been the issue.
They'll be beating a path to the door of this insurance if you pull it off!

Thanks for doing something real.
