Dave Pratte, I'm posting this for you since you seem to care and are responding to such posts.

My opinion on adjustable cam gears. Shouldn't the mod point for adjustable cam gears be a freeby if you change your cams. I know with my engine if I put any real performance cams in it, they will have to be adjusted/tuned with adjustable cam gears for them to work properly. You can adjust the stock cam gears (if you are a rocket scientist) and spend twice as much on dyno time (same price as cam gears?) or get adjustable ones and do it easily. Since you can adjust your stock cam gears anyway (neons can be) why the mod point?

Also, if you have an overhead cam engine and mill the head, to raise the compression enough to use decent cams, you will need to adjust the cams (via cam gears) anyway, to allow for the difference in deck hieght.

While I'm in opinion mode, to get more air to pass through my engine I could do throttlebody, port head/intake, cams, cam gears and header for 5 points. But if I do this my stock fuel system will run lean at high rpm (as high as my stock ECU goes) and I will need a fuel pump and regulator, 1 more point for a total of six. Or I could install a supercharger with a header, fuel system and a computer to control my fuel/timing/REV limiter for 5 points.

Sounds like I'm trying to find a way to stay in CSS1, eh. I just can't bring myself to spend $10,000 to build my Neon to CSP specs, since it would still be worth $8,000. I need another 30 hp to compete in CSS1, which I think I can get out of the head if I do it right, but it will require tuning/adjusting the cams and put me right at the limit of my stock fuel system.

Brent, the CCC decided at a December meeting to group cams and cam gears together into a single prep point modification. It's as if you read our minds! Very impressive, Mr. Copperfield  Your logic in terms of why cams and cam gears should be grouped together in terms of the prep schedule is the exact same reasoning the CCC used in reaching the same conclusion.

This news and other tweeks will be made official with the release of the 2002 rulebook, which I believe goes to print next week and should be ready for public consumption shortly thereafter. I suggest you wait to see the changes before making any firm plans on car prep for this coming season.

I feel your pain in terms of the cost of building a C/SP car. I will whisper the cost of my car to you sometime if you really want to know, but if I told you too loudly you might have a heart attack :p

Happy New Year Brent!

Krispy, I know how you could get 93 horsepower just as easily! JDM B16a2 my friend :) Hanif should have one for sale in the near future. Come race with the big boys :p

Dave,

Thanks for the information, I was waiting for the rules to come out before I started ordering anyway.
I was underestimating what I would spend to fully prepare my neon for CSP, it's probably closer to $15,000. I'm guessing that number sounds familiar to you Dave. I figure when I reach $12,000 that I would be better off just selling the neon and buying a used TypeR and some coilovers. At least that way my car will be worth close to the money spent.

Chris,

I know what you would do with 30 more hp, kick my ass.

Dave,

Can't we make Chris driving worth a couple of prep points?
