Has C.A.S.C. ever done any annual solo autocross style events on ice? If so, how did it work out?

it was done...a LONG time ago.

Andy organized it i believe (Champ98 on here)

he said the only problem they had was with the ice chips and the light beam timing system getting confused.

However..i'm not positive you could really car it a "solo/autox"

i think you'd have to call it a rally-x.

Why it hasn't been done more.....Because we race both Saturdays and Sundays. I believe when it was done before they held it on a Friday afternoon.

Back in the 80's the Grand Valley car club would have autocrosses on Puslinch lake near Kitchener. Used to get 20 to 30 cars out on the lake. Then it got too warm and the lake wouldnt freeze thick enough, so now WOSCA runs slaloms in parking lots in Brantford through the winter.

Hand timing with stop watch, score your best 4 out of 6 runs, each run was scored as a separate "event" and 100% awarded to fastest time in class.

classes were "engine over drive wheels" , "4WD" and "everything else"

The run order was reversed every heat so that first car in heat one would be last car in heat 2 etc. The track became more polished with every run so first cars out had an advantage.
The tracks were always over 2 km long and pylons were used only on the inside of the corners so you could have some real fun flailing around 100 kmh, 3rd gear stuff. :)

I didn't realize that your club runs both Saturday and Sundays. That would about rule out any solo events.

Aside from a couple two day weekends per season, A.M.E.C. runs on Sundays only. Four years ago we started doing an annual "Studs on Ice" solo event on a Sturday before a regular race day. We use the same track both days. It is quite popular, but pretty boring for our regular wheel to wheel drivers. They are used to way more track time for the same money. We do it to get new people involved in the sport. The only thing is that out of all of the participants, only about two or three will actually step up and run in our regular wheel the wheel series. The rest just want to come out and play once a year, while us organizers get no track time and end up working the event all day. We don't mandate that event particpants work at our events. We want our usual high level of officiating to be maintained.

This year we are doing something different with the event. We are changing the format to be a lapping session/Track day. We will offer one timed run at the end to determine a champion in each class. We will group the cars by tires used in groups of ten to twelve cars per 10 minute run session. Passing will be allowed only on the straights, and must be completed before a set of warning cones at the end of the straightaway. Much like asphalt track day events. We will also have one run group with no passing at all, for the solo purists who can't deal with being passed or any possible car to car contact.

Drivers will get more track time than they have in the last three solo events combined. We have never heard of an event of this type by any ice racing club. Will we be the first, or has this been done already somewhere?

The reason we run both days on the weekend so that most of us from Toronto don't mind the 2 hour trek to Minden where the track is. We have 6 organizing car clubs that take on one weekend each. This spreads the work out so no 5 or 6 people are working every weekend.

Our weekend consists of one qualifying race (10 laps) and 4 races of 12 laps each.

Saturday is the qualifier before lunch and 2 races after lunch. Sunday we cannot start until noon as Minden has a Church bylaw. We have 2 races on Sunday.

We are also running 14 classes this year with the added Street Stud Class. One class car have upwards to 30 entires for one race.

Also new this year is our Action Front Data Recovery Shootout. The top 3 finishers from each class get to run for trophies. This is an 8 lap race. Yes stud racers too but they have to change their tires.

So you see even though we run both days, we need to.

The unfortunate part of all this is we can't come down there or go to Thunderbay as we all race the same weekends. Maybe one day we could have a pure international event, say somewhere in the minddle....Minden comes to mind.
