Well thanks to everyone that decided to come to the first WOSCA winter slalom... or should that be the winter slide. By far the slowest event I've ever attended. What should have been a 20 second course had an FTD of 49 seconds.
For those that weren't there here's a picture of the "corner of death":
http://www.cockyracingguy.com/pictures/Private/16-1-05%20003.jpg
And some videos:
Guillermo gets through clean (http://www.cockyracingguy.com/pictures/Private/16-1-05%20019.avi)
Matt's co-driver gets through clean, but has a little troubel actually leaving the corner (http://www.cockyracingguy.com/pictures/Private/16-1-05%20020.avi)
A Probe shows just how little traction there is by failing to make it up the inlcine to the last turn. (http://www.cockyracingguy.com/pictures/Private/16-1-05%20025.avi)
I'll get the results up after work, I was too tired last night.
That looks like fun! Any vids of people going sideways?

Out right banned! We're not about to allow studs on a lots that's parranoid about tire marks.
Those videos sum up the day nicely...
And as for slow, it was SO slow that you could hold a normal conversation all the way through a run without losing concentration. That's the first event that I've left the mp3 player running for 90% of my runs.
Can I request an icy corner of death for the rest of the series? :D
And for the "What I learned at WOSCA" segment of the thread:
1. It's all about tire pressures. And being smooth. And patience.
2. There's nothing like a little friendly competition. ("Hey, she's kicking your ass!" Music to my ears.)
3. Watching Tony run an auto-x rally-style is a sight to behold.
4. Take notes when Marshall announces the run order.
5. Hot chocolate in the thermos is definitely a good thing.
6. You CAN drive when you cannot feel your toes. No, really.
7. Did I mention patience?

Opal,
you beat me by a good 3 seconds... ice seems to be where the insight is at home :p

Exactly,I have some spare 13's-their pretty fluffed so they would suck in deep snow though.Oh and forget about driving to the event on them as well.;)

those conditions don't look all that different than what we encounter at Ice racing every weekend.
Anyone wanna buy some used tractionized tires?? whoever does will walk away from everyone else.
I asked that question and was told that ice racing prepares the surface much differently than we do for solo. Solo plots a course and lays down the cones. Nothing is done to the surface. They will do a little work on the startbox but that is all.
So it is much different than grooming a track. We never know what to expect and let nature make the decisions. This time it was pure slickness and only the sharpest drivers knew where to get a little more traction than the rest of us. The only true ice racer car of the day had lots of trouble with the surface.
So bring it out to WOSCA and let's see. Good practice for ice racing. But I'm hoping for snow next time.

That was quite an ordeal.. I never expected this much ice. "The corner of death" was a surprise for many in the first run. Hopefully it will be clear next time :)

Sorry about the results. My floppy drive bit the dust so no way of transferring them from the laptop. I brought the disk to work today and emailed them home, so they'll be up tonight.

We don't do anything to the ice... Apart from Flooding the track to build up the ice....Apart from that, we plow the snow off to make big banks and that's it. We normally have 12 inches or so of ice.....It's alot slicker at times than the "corner of death" you guys had.
And the "only true ice racer car"...was that the MR2....if so...that prolly isn't the best example.
I'd bring it to WOSCA....but we start racing this week. then it's every weekend for 6 weeks....So unles your still going in march....no dice.
Flooding the track, plowing, etc are still much different than a WOSCA winter course. Add that nearly everyone drives to the event in the car they run. etc.
I won't get into trash talking since we're driving two very different types of events. I'll leave that to the times we're in the same event or to the folks that want to play that. Too bad that doesn't sound likely this year.

Don't forget the studded classes. Those guys give the surface a serious scrubbing. Not like the parking lot where it just keeps getting more and more polished all day with no signs of relief....
Yeah, I brought the MR2 to try it out (took advantage of the TAC event being postponed). I wasn't going to tractionize the tires because I'm cheap and wanted them to last longer. But now I've definately decided to get those things nice and as grippy as possible.
