Whats the rules/points for seam welding? Is it restricted to certain classes? Is it free?

I don't think it's mentioned.... (I looked through and didn't see anything that stood out...)

just put the carpets back in when your done, and buy some good seam sealer to cover up your welds so it looks factory.

Seam welding is not mentioned anywhere in the rulebook. Therefore is it not allowed in any class except mod, as per 6.2.D

6.2.D Compliance with the Rules

All modifications to the vehicles must be in compliance with
all other applicable rules and regulations. No modifications
are allowed in S/SS/SP unless specifically authorized in this
rulebook. Assume that if the rule does not specifically say
you can, then you can't.

Having stated that, I think seam welding IS something that should be addressed in the rules. Perhaps 1pt in Stock and SS. And free in SP.

I agree. I don't see why it should be a mod only thing. :(

another thing that should be looked at, A/C removal

Check the rules for allowed mods in SS. The old rule book (pre-CNAC) used to read "chassis stiffening" as free, which means members and welding.

Thanks for the tip! That helped my search of the rule book!

So under 6.6. STREET PREPARED CATEGORY
J - Body Structure Modifications
"Any chassis, frame, or engine reinforcement is permitted. Method of attachment is unrestricted providing the original chassis and frame remain intact. i.e.: no cutting or removal of the original structure."

Any chassis reinforcement is permitted. Does seam welding fall under that?

C'mon, Dave! CMOD could use a fierce competitor such as yourself! (Not to mention your car would help raise the IMAGE of last years field of ugly ducklings):D

I would get destroyed in c-mod! Maybe next season... money is kinda tight since i'm in college... being competitive in sp is gonna be a stretch this year! ;) (which is why i'm looking for cheap ways of improving the car) Oh and my car might not be looking as pretty as last season either... :)

Ok I know what Seam welding is... but how useful is it from a chassis strengthening point of view? does it stiffen the chassis up even more?

(just curious be cause I don't have much of a clue)

seam welding makes the car prolly 10 times stronger....

i did it in my rally car and it makes a HUGE difference...

you wouldn't believe how the panels are held together now....Think GLUE!!! lots of GLUE!!!

really?... I knew it was good but I didn't know there was that much of a difference. I work in the weld department at Honda and I know we put a spot weld about every 2 inches on the flange around every door and window, there are thousands of welds in a body. I guess this is more for the floorpan though?

Spots welds are relatively poor in terms of rigidity. They're nothing when compared to the likes of this:

ok so they make it stronger.. but are you suppose to seam weld every seam? and how do you know where they all are? anyone got a detailed list of steps to go through to do this?

I would assume you do every seam. I'm going to.
