Still trying to figure out what tires to run this year in solo1 and solo2.
What are the +/- of the yokohamas????
I think its the advan A032R.
Are the yokohamas better than the falkens?

The Yoks are an R-comp ... the Falkens are not (unless they have a new one).
Any R-comp will be better than a street tire ... they are just not in the same class.
The Yoks are probably the slowest of the R-comps, but they ahave a very long life, and are easy to learn on. Here is breakdown that I see a lot (ordered by speed):
Yok A032R - cheap, long life, lot's of feedback, good wet
Toyo RA-1 - expensive, long life, good feedack, good wet
Kumho V700 Victoracer - cheap, medium life, little feedback, heat cycle sensitive
Kumho Ecsta - cheap, medium life, no good for heavy cars (too greasy?)
Michelin Pilot Sport Cups - expensive, med life,
Hoosier - Short life, little feedback, very fast, heat cycle sensitive
Thereis also Avon, Hankook, and Pirelli PZero Corsa, but I don't know how they fit in.
As a starting tire, you can't go wrong with the A032R (soft compound) or the RA-1 (expensive, but great alla around).

THANKS FOR THE INFO.
I THINK I'LL GO WITH THE YOKOS. I TRIED TO GET THE HANKOOK Z211 BUT MY SUPPLIER SAID THAT THEY ARE NOT GOING TO CARRY THEM IN CANADA ANY MORE.
THE FALKEN TIRE I WAS TALKING ABOUT WAS THE AZENZI. I THOUGHT IT WAS AN R COMP TIRE, MY MISTAKE. I HAVE TO FIND OUT MY PRICE ON THE YOKO'S BUT I CAN GET THE FALKENS FOR $160, DOES THAT SOUND RIGHT???

Speaking of yokohama's,
Does anyone know when A048 goes into the production in 17" sizes. It should be a better tire than A032R;)
Last Summer the sponsor was on one of the events and said that it should start in 2005.
Thanks,
Michael

What's this about Ecsta's not being good for heavy cars? What is considered a heavy car? Does this opinion apply to the V710's that everybody seems to love?
I'm curious because I'm planning to get 710's.
Thanks.

I was talking about the V700A Ecsta, not the 710. It seems on BMWs (~3000lbs) they get too greasy on the track. Great for AutoX though! You MUST shave them, or they will chunck.

Having driven my 3500 lb car on both Ecsta V700s and Victoracers I found the latter to be much faster even though they are the older design. Look out for the V710s. They are designed to match the R series Hoosiers but apparently do not withstand very many heat cycles. This is information from Kumho and can be found at www.tirerack.com under the description of the tire. This means they may lose their performance edge far more quickly than the rubber wears out. They are likely excellant tires for regional racing but may not be ideal for Solo 1 unless you are going to buy a lot of them.

For the record, the HANKOOK Z211 are still for sale in Canada. Trac Racing DEpot being the motorsport retailer.
With any valid Solo license, you can get the 205/50 for about $165.
To fill in where Scotch stopped, these tires offer the same or better grip in the dry that the RA1 and 032rs offer except that they work brand new and then right to the cord.
In Quebec, we have a contingency plan in place and we , as do WTZ, support and sponsor the racers.
If you need a quote, Pm me and it will be my pleasure to reply.

The V700 Ecsta (or V70A depending on where you look) lacks the side wall stiffness to support a car 3000lb or over. Of course this depends on the camber. Lots of negative camber will make them work supposedly. I've heard the V710 isn't as bad as the Ecsta, but isn't as good as the Victoracer, in terms of side wall strength. But I've also heard is grippier which makes for the short coming to some extent.
Incidently for the people running 225/50/16 (which is a significant number) both the Ecsta and V710 are, were or will-be offered in a 225/45/15 which gives a very nice gearing advantage. I ran the 225/45 Ecsta and decided the Victoracer was faster on my 3000lb camber challenged car.
