View Full Version : testing understanding of PIP's

I need some help folks.
I'm trying to figure out what class I would be in, but I have gotten confused.
Here's what I have:
1991 Talon AWD
- springs (4 PIP)
- dampers (2 PIP)
- bushings (bars, arms) (3 PIP)?
- camber bolts (1 PIP)
- exhaust (turbo-back)+cat (1 PIP)
- tiny little increase in boost (3 PIP)
(to compensate for really low compression/worn out engine ;)
- snorkel removed from air-can (free)
(full can still in place)
The stock car starts off in GT4, but I go to GT3 because of the mods and since I have 14 PIP's I go to GT1 (65% +14 = 79%)?
Thanks for any guidance!
Oh, btw, does removing a roll bar cost 1PIP? Can I do I please since I'm already taking 1 PIP for the bushings?
Cheers,
Tashko.

yeah I think there's a few of us moving up the ladder.
seeing that Rob's going maybe I should back away from thinking about it this year.... :p
or maybe not...

I don't think I'll qualify for the rookie category due to ice racing :(
Hopefully the Talon will enjoy open courses more than it did solo2.
Did I get my PIP & classing correct? With my luck I'll end up in a class with Tony K / Peter L equivalents and get my butt kicked in another racing category.
It's going to be tough in GT1 against prepped ITR's and the like!

Yes you will ... it does not matter what you did before, as long as you've never done more than 3 solo 1 events per year.

The mighty mullet will be a running this year, with me a rokkie driver.
We got the HP up to 402RWHP but it didn't like it on pump gas. So we went back to our previous setup. Works just fine with about 300RWHP.

Tashko, you only pay 1 PIP for "any/all" bushings, not per bushing. So that saves you 2 PIPs. Other than that, you've attached the correct PIP values to each mod. It's unfortunate that you're paying 3 PIPs for a "tiny little increase in boost", but we have no way of monitoring the itchy boost fingers of turbo car owners so we hit them all equally hard regardless of the extent of the boost increase. Such is life in the rulebook game.
Since your car starts at 62.5% and you've got 12 PIPs worth of mods, your final PI is 74.5%, which puts you at the top of GT2, not GT1 where you've projected (FYI, each individual car has its own Starting PI, so you don't use the top of your starting class as you've done).

Excellent, thanks Dave.
I'd rather be at the top PIP level in GT2 than bottom of GT1!! Naturally, I have to make sure my PIP usage is worthwhile. It's also going to be interesting switching between Solo1 and Solo2 during the summer.:)
At least I can be a novice in solo1; I can only over-achieve...
That "tiny" boost increase might end up a little bit bigger to justify 3 PIP's :D
(since PI emphasis is on power:weight)
Yup, you'd be wise to either run stock boost or run as much as you safely can (without needing other mods, which obviously cost PIPs too). You'll be better off spending your time/energy/money on seat time, tires, and brakes rather than trying to find more horsepower.
Solo 1 is all about maintaining your momentum. There aren't a lot of Solo 1 tracks that allow less experienced drivers with lots of horsepower to make up time on experienced drivers with less powerful cars.

Rule 4.1.2 covers this.
I don't think it restricts the three events to a single year. I think it is 3 events ever. The events also include ice racing race schools rally events etc.
glad somebody took the time to look up the rule :) Yes indeedy, if you've done 3 or more Solo 1, stage rally, race, race school, ice race or equivalent events, are a past Solo 2 overall champ or have worked as a driving instructor you are not eligible as a Solo 1 Novice. Nowhere does it say anything about 3 Solo 1 events in a given year. That's an old rule that was deleted a while back.
We want Solo 1 novices to be truly that, which is why we added considerable limitations to it in section 4.1.2 last year.

Right ... sorry about that. I guess I was going by the "novice" list in 2003 :)
yeah, we tightened it up a bunch in '04.
As punishment, you must grant me a few laps behind the wheel in your M3 :)

Sure, as long as you teach me how to drive it ;)
