Does anybody know if a 16x8 rim (offset of either 40/38/35) with 265 rubber (~270mm sect. width) will fit on a '91 AWD Talon?
If not, how about 16x7.5 with 250mm rubber?
Thanks!

I cannot rememebr the offset exactly, but I have done it. Paul from WOSCA used to use them on his Talon. If I recall, he used to use 245/45R16s on the 16X8 on his car. This was a borderline fit. Anything bigger would have stuck out, hit the fender, or hit the rear strut.
With a bit of work, we can figure it out again.

I didn't think I could do 265's, maybe with spacers.
I'm not too concerned with the fender or sticking out since its' allowed in E/SP and GT2. I think there is enough clearance in the well since my car is on Eibach Pro-kits which don't give too much drop (~12mm) and a 16" wheel.
WTZ suggested 40mm offset as max. I just need to find rims from somewhere. It seems 16x8 is not so common?

OH! and you want to be able to buy one as well!?!? :-)
Since most people are going for bigger and bigger wheels, the wide smaller diameters tend to be less available.
The Team Dynamics Diablo is available in 16X7.5, et 37. That will work, and is available fairly easily. 245s will still fit on the 7.5" wheel.
The amount of drop should not affect how much clearance you have, as a wheel should clear from rest to full compression.

Paul is running 245/45/16.
BTW Ed Ho was running the same size in stock back in 1998.
I definetly have Pauls email, and I think I can find Ed's (I know he still works for Daimler in Pontiac). Let me know if you'd like to ask them about offsets etc.

Wouldn't hurt to ask if it's no trouble, thanks.
I think I'm going to go for 245/45/16 Victoracers on a 16x8 +38ish offset. If I can't find an 8" I'll settle for 7.5" (anyone selling?)
BTW, Pete, are you at Marcor in Hamilton? If so, give Chris a nudge regarding my Eibach RMA#!:D

Yes Tashko, I do work at Marcor in Hamilton. Can you give me some more info regarding your RGA? Is it related to warranty or new product?

This is the Paul from WOSCA - 92 roadrace talon
I have 2 sets of 8" wheels -one sets offset was cut in T.O. years ago just for the talon but i have to use a spacer in order to keep tires from rubbing on the inside front .The second aftermarket set came from a 2nd gen. rx7 which fit great. The tires are GSCS 245/45/26 which are wider than other brands of 245 tires.
I can get you the offset if you still need it. The tires do stick out past the outer lip though.
If you're buying wheels go for 8". In 1992 i used 225/50/16 bridgestones re71r on 8" wheels( did not stick out past lip ) which worked good enough to win overall and top novice in solo II. They wouldn't cut it against todays tires.

Hi Paul.
That offset would be great to know! Also, if you happen to know the year the rims are from? I think they had a few different wheels in the 2nd gen years.
I haven't found a 16x8 listed anywhere.
The only 16x8 RX7 info I found was 3rd gen w/50mm offset (Mazda FD rims). I'm not interested in running a 10mm spacer and changing studs!
The area I'm worried about fitting is the bottom spring perch on the front struts. The 16" dia. offers enough clearance if it sticks out so the offset is just to keep the rubber away from the strut spring perch and the toe-arm in the rear.
Interested in selling those perfect fit rx7 rims?:D
I'm sure winning overall novice had something to do with driver as well as tyres...
Thanks,
Tashko.

so from what i can figure
the weels that were cut for the talon are ROH 8" with a 6" back space which translates to a 38mm offset - i have to use a spacer with these wheels.
the ones which were from a RX7 are CSA 8" with a back space of
5" so i think that works out to a 12mm offset (used a online quick offset calculator). don't know if that makes sense.
do you still have the stock spring perch or adjustable coil overs ?
do you have limitations on the amount a wheel can extend past your fender lip ?

Paul
RX wheels are from Doug's T2 aren't they.

Well that's not right because Preludes take 45 offset and Talons take 38. (Ask Ralph and Tashko about that)

Doug, thanks for the tip on Victors wheels. Unfortunately, Victor already sold his wheels.
Marsh, the stock offset for a 1g Talon is 46mm but that is with a 6" rim. I ran the Kosei 15x7 45offset with a 205 tyre.
I wanted the 38offset Kosei's because I can run a larger tyre with no rub issues and still not stick out of the fender (and it helped Ralph out too:) ).
Paul, I'm in ESP for Solo2 so I can stick out past the fender and for Solo1 I might have to take 1PIP for it.
You had the right number on those offsets.
If I go for +12mm I could actually get some custom steelies made up since they are cost-effective.
How far did those wheels stick out?
I would still prefer to try 35-40mm offset but if you had to use a spacer w/38, maybe 35mm is the way to go.
I'm running GAB's and Eibach Pro-Kit, so my spring dia. and perches are the same size as stock.
cheers,
Tashko.

I use 17x8 with 35 offset. 245/45/17 victoracer. 245/40/17 is a better fit but few tires in that size (yoks for sure). With 16s you most likely will rub the inside of the rim on the rear control arm. 17s also have lower profile + room for bigger brakes. Full lock the front tire rubs on tire well but not a big deal.
I have heard of people using 255s and even 275s on 17x9s. In certain tire brands 275s are only slightly wider than 255s. But 255s are about 1" wider section width than 245s.
If you want to run 3rd gen RX7 rims I have a brand new set of custom alum. spacers I had made to provide proper offset concentric hub support. You need to enlarge the holes on the rims and use the stock wheel nuts. This works on stock studs. These rims are light and fairly easy to find cheap. I gave it up when I went to larger rotors. I have tested the spacers for fit but never used them. they are 1/2" thick. If interested email me to work out a price.

Does the 35 offset stick out much?
I've ended up with 16x8 w/38 offset. They have 225's on them which clear both front and rear with a couple of mm's to spare.
The only problem is the front strut has a stud used to mount the brake line which is too long and kisses the rim lip. A little dremel action will fix that!:D
I'm going to run 3-5mm spacers just to make sure everything will clear. The 225's measure 9.5" at the widest part and the 245's I'm getting are around 9.8". I think it will be alright. The only part I'm worried about is the sidewall rubbing the rear trailing arm while cornering.
I'm sticking with the stock brakes so 16's is all I need. Tyres are cheaper in 16 and the slightly smaller diameter doesn't hurt either.
Thanks for all the help guys...I didn't think it would be this hard to find the right rims. Now to wait for the new rubber to arrive and find out what I've gotten myself into!

I have road raced Talons for a while now, and found that the car is fastest on 16x 8's (225/50/16) unless you go to full race slicks, and it is very difficult to find 16 inch slicks with the right height.
I have a new set of 16x8 Volk's (38 offset) that I might consider selling.

Tashko -
If you are looking for information or advice on race set-ups for Talons - I highly suggest you you listen to / contact BBracin - above.
Not only have they been running Talons (1G and 2G and Lasers) for several years - but have competed at some of the highest levels of racing.

Alright Bubblecar...I'll do what you suggest. BBracin...give me some info!
For solo2 I'm running 15" 225/50's
which really helps in gearing. I'm putting in an adjustable 26mm rear bar and lightweight flywheel.
Also, I'm building my own piping from the intercooler to the throttlebody (maybe even patent pending worthy stuff)
I'm thinking about getting rid of the re-active rear toe...does it actually make a difference?
I've been thinking about running with the front bar disconnected when I have the rear bar in place. Do you have any experience with that? I'm limited in the races I'm running this year so I need to maximise my setup while TonyK in working on his! I'm hoping it takes him more time than he expects to do that. It doesn't help that he is going to let Peter run his car also.
Maybe if Greg doesn't get his Rx-7 or ins. in order he should co-run my car!
hmm...okay I'll start another thread just for your BBracin!
