View Full Version : WOSCA winter #4
Who's bringing an RWD out this time? Or is my little '85 Toyota going to have the class to itself again?
BTW - I had to extract it from a mud sinkhole on Gold Creek Rd west of London the other day. I do NOT intend to wash it before the event. Fear the mud!

mud = traction

Yes, pack the wheel wells with mud before each run. Then it will fall off under the wheels during the run, and gain some extra traction.
I would bring out my rwd car. But unfortunately it runs in the fwd class. Plus it sucks!

Alright, 3 more days to go!!!!!
How about track condition???? Is there snow on top or is it all ICE????
Any Ideas on what king of height to run? My car was definatly too low for the first few runs last time out, but if the track is all ice it would be better to be lower would it not????

If it's all ice, then you'll want stock ride height, with the softest springs you can find. On ice you can't go fast enough for a low CG to make a difference. So it's better to be at stock height, that way the suspension geometry can work the way it was designed to.

I'm Running Hankook Ice Bear W440. a lot of guys are running the Nokian Hakkapalitas.

I'm running Hakka 2's, a whole bunch are on Hakka 1's. There are also some Kumho kw11's and kw19's floating around too as well as Toyo Garit HT's.
But run the miata on sunday and find out first hand:p
Old, bald, hard Hakka NR-09s.
Matt (Wedge) wants to codrive my car so we need one more for a full RWD class. Bring 'er out Jeff!

They don't use very many cones for these winter courses. So even if I hit every one, it still won't come close to your record :D

Wedge,
I think we have to change the record... From being sheer number of cones hit to being percentage of cones on course hit.... come on you can hit the 90% mark I know you can.

Ha ha ha ha ha. Oh, the irony.
That was a rediculous course. But it was fun. :D

rediculous good :D or rediculous bad :(
Careful, I bruise easy, being of royalty and all...(Ice Queen)
Oh the nice open corners I had originally planned that the RWD guys would have had so much fun penduluming through!
With all the cones being killed, it didn't seem like it was going to be that difficult a course considering what area we had to work with.

Peter,
I thought the course was very good considering the lack of space you had to work with.
But I have to admit those walls of cones, designed to keep people safe, were a little tighter then I prefer.

I loved this event. Great course! Now that winter series are over, what's next? :)
Peter W

Yeah it was tight for going through fast except for Steve T. :D
A faster steering rack for me and I wouldn't have kept hitting the same cones there either in my quest to catch FTD.
With the huge dispartity in grip from the wet ashphalt and the snow off the raceline, it was necessary to slow some of the horsepower/torque brutes from hitting the lights or snowbank or sliding through cone wall into the mall traffic.
My orginal thinking was to make it open earlier, so cars would be entering into the pin turn area straight and balanced with no weight transfer issues to deal with that caused the slides in the first place. But then the entry speeds into the tight 180 might have been too fast for the conditions and we would have be curing one problem but creating another.

You got about a month until the first Wosca Spring Event on April 10, then SPDA is holding a two day solo 2 school with beginner and advanced training on the follow weekend of 16/17, and back to Wosca for Event 2 the next weekend on the 24th.
So you have three back to back weekends of solo 2 coming up next month. Bank some quality time with loved ones and the pant wearer in the family between now and then because this is probably the only lull in the season between WOSCA/COMP/PITL/HADA/TLMC and a whole host of other groups as well as the Regional Series this summer!

Great event guys, had lots of fun, a little tight at spots (just more cones to hit :) ) - it just added to the challenge.
Cliff - should have shifted to second towards the end of my last run.

Yea the course had issues, but Pete got screwed by the bad lot condition and in the end the solution wasn't horribly bad (considering the alternative).
For those that weren't there someone plowed two truck parking lanes, such that all other ground was usless (besides everywhere else being two bump. So image setting up a slalom on a go-kart oval track. Extremely tight space. Then the timing equipment didn't show, then the generator died and the first run was lost then.... *sigh* I think I'm just gonna go to bed now.

I posted a map of the course I drew up for those that missed out on the crazyness.
Marsh remember to fix Matthew N. two entries in the series standings due to spelling errors, when your done fixing other things. :(
Follow the thread down a little. It's obvious! (http://spda-online.ca/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?viewmode=flat&topic_id=1047&forum=19)

I definatly liked bringing the car up to speed somewhat. And Can't wait until the summer events. The biggest problem I had was through the slalom to the tightly adjusted part of the track, my power steering would dissappear for a few short moments.

I thought the course design was good. It was nice to drive something a little different, even though the chicane through the walls of cones had me spinning my arms like... ummm... like... someone who spins his arms really fast? (couldn't think of a good simile)
And I didn't even get stuck in the snowbank this time!
I agree, I enjoyed the course too. It was a hoot, totally different from anything that would be run in the summer. Good job with what you had to work with Pete!
I can't believe I got whooped by Steve's Miata in the snow though! I wish I had a diff!

I don't think a limited-slip diff would have helped us.
Did you actually watch Steve run? His skills are Godlike! I have no idea how that car managed to hold the road at the speed he was turning...

I really like the new nic-name he was given Sunday.
For those not there it was "Harry Potter", a wizard that can make speed out of a summer car and snow.

Its was originally given to him because he can show up for an event with one set of tires (rain tires) and then when the rain decides to not show up he can be gone for 2 minutes and have another set of dry condition tires....
Although during the year while competing againest him is CS I soon realized that he could always find that little extra required .... Almost like he could drive thru the cones without knocking them over.... " Harry Potter" the magician....

Laser-precision in that little chick-car.

Results are now up. Congratulations to Peter W. for wrapping up the championship. Other notables go to: Cliff S for (I think?) his first ever event win, to Daniel F. for finishing better in Lisa's civic then he ever did in his WRX, to Stephen for the completely thorough can wooping he delivered to RWD, to Matthew N. who got AWD and FTD in the process, and last but not least to me stupid oil burning H22 engine for handing EOD win and 2nd overall to Rob T. on a very expensive platter.
Mental Note: Check your oil BEFORE YOU RUN!

Hey, there's an error in there. My last run had 1 cone, but it was not a DNF. It doesn't change the results, but I just want to set the record straight. I've got a reputation to uphold! :D

Thanks Marsh!
What an awful day to be an organizer! I'm glad that everyone enjoyed the course nonetheless. The tight space and changing surface did make for an interesting day for drivers and spectator/marshalls alike.
I got some super high speed footage of Steve T's runs, and if you pause it frame by frame, you can barely see him stop, get out, move the cone out of the way, drive past, get out again and reset the cone and drive on again!
