View Full Version : Engine mounts??

I looked through the rule book again and I can't find any mention of engine / tranney mounts anywhere. So I figure it's one of two things. Instant MOD, or they fall under the suspension bushings and can be replaced with polyurathane in SS. Can anyone clairify this for me as I want to add poly's to my engine mounts. (Preludes are known for bad front mounts.)
Thanx in advance.

Neons are known for bad front mounts too.
Last year's rules said that engine mounts are 2 points! I haven't had the time to read this year's rules yet.

Cadillac Seville and Deville's are known for bad front mounts they are even filled with oil to help dampen the engine rocking motion but they rip and release all of the oil. Pay for the replacement is nice even under warranty.

Ok, apart from what cars have bad engine mounts, does anyone know if I can add polly inserts?
(Looking in your general direction chief scrutinier...)

free, but allowable only in SP and Mod.

Ummmm, moving a car up to Street Prepared Class (SP) because you fill-in the rubber-part of an engine mount with polyurethane? That's crazy!
I have a request for next year's rules... Can they differentiate between:
A) Modifying the engine mounts by changing the location or structure of mounting points. 2 Points, only allowed in SP.
B) Replacing or augmenting the soft-rubber portions with polyurethane. 0 points, only allowed in Super Stock (SS).
After all, in SS you can replace all of the rubber bushings in your suspension with urethane bushings for ZERO points. And this will actually help the cornering performance of the car!
Replacing or augmenting the rubber bushings of the engine mounts, on the other hand, will do little to help the performance of the car, but will certainly decrease the cost associated with replacing torn engine mounts every season.
This is more of a cost issue than a performance issue. Now I'm going to have to remove the urethane inserts and go down to stock class. But at the end of the season I'll probably have to spend 3 x $100 to replace all three broken engine mounts.

ok, np, but I'm confused. I still can't find it in the rule book. Would that be under the 2pt. for the "modification or subsitution of any or all external engine components" If so it says nothing about mounts and I can claim that under SS. Just looking for a clairifacation.
Thanx

My mistake (hey after 3 hours sleep and a full 10 hour day of manual labour and an exam on the brain.......) it is free in SP and Mod.
Section 6.6.J.i) Any chassis, frame or engine reinforcement is permitted.........
Yes, no matter what you say, it is an engine reinforcement. The logic is that you cannot do any real engine mods until SP, so it is not allowable until SP.

No offence Ralph, but I told you so... :p
BTW up until the rod bearing, this is the ONLY thing I had to fix under the hood.

And me too, the only thing I've replaced is the engine mount. As well as ALOT of others from TPC. Oh well, I geuss thats out.
Couldn't this be argued in under chassis reinforcement (which is allowed in SS) rather than engine reinforcement? I thought engine reinforcement meant things like forged pistons, etc. to make the mill itself stronger.
After all, the purpose of the chassis is to keep the drivetrain in place as much as keeping the wheels in place. (I've even heard of cars that use engine mounts as structural pieces!)
(NOTE: I don't have a copy of the rule book, since I'm on dial-up, so I'm just making suggestions with no knowledge on this one!)
BTW, after two seasons of autocrossing and one ham-fisted transmission swap, the Mirage now has THREE, count 'em, THREE torn engine mounts. (Two are actually transmission mounts.) The engine moves around a shocking amount and, to my dismay, hits things. This, obviously, could even be a safety issue. In go the plastic mounts!

Let's not forget people... that you can replace your parts with NEW OE PARTS!!!
This can make a HUGE difference!
0 mile parts!!!!!

Mr. MiataBoi,
don't give away how I plan to win H-stock this year with a car with 300,000 kms on it :p

On a highly UN-popular Honda that was only ever made in Japan OE parts are big $
JayH: Chassis reinforcement is no-longer allowed in SS, just strut tower bars are.

So?
Miatas are ONLY made in Japan too... same with LOTS of cars.
You can choose to drive a sunfire if you wish.
OE is OE.
(not the Malt Liquor!)
You can't buy a unique car... then complain that it's hard to get cheap parts for it... and then use that to justify a superior, performing aftermarket part! Hell... OR header is $850... but for $350 I can build a junkyard turbo. ;)
Just be thankful that Honda aftermarket is SO STRONG and parts are so cheap!
On Miatas... OE parts are ok... but aftermarket is relatively expensive... because it's such a niche market...
And thank goodness we drive crappy 4-bangers... V8 mods are EXPENSIVE in comparison...
Not to mention tire and brake costs of bigger / heavier cars.

So...since I'm in SP already...and I found out last weekend that I have busted up engine mounts...
...who knows where I can get some castable urethane to fill these mounts up with?
Yes, I'm being a cheap bastard and not buying more new parts...
Buy a plastic breadboard and a plumber's soldering torch. Melt the breadboard into the mounts. That was my plan anyway.
Or, you could use "Window Weld."

3M super fast urethane (aka window weld) is what it's going to be.
$23.00 from Napa for a tube...

I bought a calking tube of polyurethane from Home Depot. It's original intent was for filling cracks in concrete. I never used it on my mounts though, I bought polyurethane before I got the chance to try it.
