To all competitors,
It's that time of year again, the Annual Solo I Open House is here April 7th
2002 at Cedarbrae Volkswagen, 666 Markham Rd. Ontario at Lawrence Ave. from
1:00pm to 5:00pm. We are expecting a great turnout this year and John Smeets
is "Putting on the Ritz" of a show this year. Come see the new digs, factory
race cars and the sponsors are setting up product displays too, You can win
CSC Racing Apparel also. In an effort to speed up registration we will be
providing everyone with a complete registration package with a rulebook and
assistance on how to get everything filled out quickly & accurately.
Multiple registrars, no waiting list, what could be easier?
On a more serious note:
Two days ago the clubs and I received notice that the new mandatory ASN
Insurance package includes an unprecedented daily insurance premium for Solo
I events. This will result in up to $18000 of additional cost to Solo I!
At an emergency meeting last night the representatives of the Ontario Solo
Organizers (OSO) voted to increase the per event registration fee from $95
to $110 in order to partially meet these unexpected costs. The new fee
structure will be posted on the web later today and new registrations form
and all the documentation will be updated accordingly.
ASN Canada FIA previously contracted with K&K Insurance to provide a
comprehensive insurance plan for amateur motorsports in Canada which was due
to be renewed April 1, 2002. Under this plan each club paid an annual fee
to participate in the insurance program and additional premiums were
assessed only for 'speed' events that included on-track passing, therefore
Solo I never had to pay additional premiums.
A few months ago all the clubs received notice that K&K was unlikely to be
able to quote on renewing their plan for 2002 and that ASN Canada was
actively searching for a replacement. A few weeks ago ASN announced to
everyone that they were close to a deal with a different carrier and that
clubs could expect premiums to increase approximately 50%. The bombshell
that Solo I would now have to pay new premiums of this magnitude landed on
April 2nd, and we will not get further clarification from the ASN on the new
package's details until late in April.
Everyone associated with Solo I is devastated and dismayed by both the
nature of these insurance changes and the manner in which they were
presented to us. That said, we have no choice but to pay for this
insurance.
We ought to count ourselves lucky that we haven't had to pay extra premiums
in the past: now we must accept the new reality and move on. I still
firmly believe that the registration fee of $110 represents a bargain for
Solo competitors to be able to enjoy the excitement of time trials racing on
real racetracks.
With all that said, I hope you see you all this Sunday and let the fun for
2002 begin.
Warmest regards,
Perry Iannuzzi
