An Integra went on its roof this weekend at a lapping session in Mosport. Apparently the car is badly damage, probably beyond repair and the driver got a piece of glass in his eye.

What's going on? Why so many accidents? Personally, I put it down to driver training. If this kind of thing keeps happening, there'll be no lapping days and Solo will cost $300 an event.

Was that on the big track or the DDT?

It was the DDT track, we were going clockwise using all the kinks.
Its was near the end of the day.

I just had my power steering pump seize and blown my serpentine belt, came of the track , looked back saying dame my day is over to see a white TYPE R Integra roll over at the last kink befor you come back to the straight at the pit wall.:(

That's awful news...I hope the driver (and passenger?) is ok. I hope they took the driver to the hospital to have his eyes washed out. Debb (my wife) was in a rollover on the highway as a passenger (no, i wasn't the driver) and got glass in her eyes. Having them washed out at the hospital did the trick.

Yup.. I saw the car yesterday... have pictures too (somewhere here). Pretty nasty. Will post them on the HADA board as an incentive for a certain type R driver to get his butt in gear. :)

I heard they were both okay. I saw.. whom I could only assume were the two drivers standing by it, they looked allright to me. Dunno how recently the accident happened by the time I rolled by (at the end of my day on the Big Track).

it was caused by driver error for sure(novice driver)....the driver turned on the dirt and the wheels caught..and flipped..he was going into the turn way to fast..they are lucky they did not get hurt.... car is totalled...

other than that the lapping day was good...nice weather..and lots of neat cars....

It seems interesting that other than Andre Corriveau's Miata getting launched by some hay bales that all of the roll overs I have seen have been front drivers , usually understeering off the track with the wheels cranked hard and rolling as the outside front wheel digs into the dirt . I thought front wheel drive was supposed to be safe !! I guess that is the same as buying an SUV because you think it's safe .

I think the rollovers in FWD cars is more a function of driver inexperience than drivetrain configuration. Only old farts drive RWD cars these days, and they're all very "experienced" (ie. slow) so there's really no chance of a rollover :p Ain't that right Dr. Dave and Shaman?

And every wall slap I've ever seen is a RWD car not knowing when to give up after fishing tailing out of a corner. So I guess we're even?

Dave , I don't think Steve is that old !!

Marsh , at least slapping the wall in unlikely to damage anyone beyond their egos and pocket books . Roll overs are significantly more likely to produce personal injury . Trust me , I'm a Doctor ( did I really say that ! )

Seriously though it may be necessary to give a little more instruction before some of these novices get on the track .

I completely agree Dr. Dave, all the clubs/organizations hosting lapping events should be extra careful these days to make sure novices are getting proper instruction and supervision while at/on the track. With the insurance climate being the way it is, we can't be too careful!

You know, Elisa and I were talking about just that today. I told her about the rollover and I remember how nervous I felt the first time out on the track. Luckily for me, it was at a Solo 1 school and got some instruction about what not to do. I also had 1 and a half full years of Solo 2 under my belt and I think it helped a lot.

I know we need to get new people in to the sport but we should be considering about how we are alowing some people with no experience at all onto the track. I think Solo 1 has instituted a "new drivers must get signed off" policy this year (don't quote me on that 'cause I'm not 100% certain). Anyway, I think it's a great idea. We might also think about making the school mandatory.

Yes I know I was being facetious.

We had a rookie roll a few years ago with WOSCA. We know have the "how not to roll over" in or drivers meeting, and no one goes on the track with out at least having an experienced member with them for a few laps, and usually we take them out in their own car to show them the line first.

I assumed all clubs did this?

Caius: It is my understanding also that Solo has a "coaching" system, and until the novice is "signed off" he/she can not compete by themself. (perhaps not even run, I'm not sure)

Perhaps Herr Direktor can chime in on this one...

i think the driver had an instructor in the car with him......anyway it could have resulted in a death..they were very lucky...we should think about manditory roll bars on all cars..that roof was all caved in...a few more rolls and they would have been crushed..

hey dave... talking about rwd f-bodies..there was a white firebird with 407rwhp out on saturday..i was over him like stink..on the back straight he was barely pulling on me..and in the corners of course i ate him up....anyway it was fun after telling him that my motor was only 2.4l :)

It's a funny thing about power. On that little track, you really don't get to use it or see the results of it. Torque, to a point, yes. If you come out of corners faster, you stand a chance at beating a more powerful car through the straight. This becomes really pointed when one car has sticky tires and is stripped and the other is original weight on street tires. ;) That's why I don't mind being in ASP at all, because while I may have the biggest power maker, I can't always make it through corners as fast as the other cars... sometimes yes, sometimes no. Watch Eric and I out at play and you will see him hold onto me right through the first 2/3 of the back straight from that monster jump he gets on me through the hairpin, for example.

Welcome to the world of having a little bit of power, though. :)

ADAM
04-23-2002, 03:19 PM
just a little power is the key word....i was only able to get a top speed of 84mph on the ddt...what kind of top speeds were you getting...

you should see the neat little boost controller/power meter that i got..it records peak HP, top speed, and peak boost..plus a bunch of other crap as well...

anyway..you are right ...it was a suped up street firebird car...(though my car is also licenced for the road) :)

Depends on the layout. Counterclockwise running the perimeter, I hit around 120mph or so at the fastest point, the left-to-right sweeper. On the back "straight", I have no idea... perhaps 100mph? I really couldn't say. I only know on the sweeper because my shift light flashes just before the braking zone, which is approximately 200km/h.

200?! on the DDT? Gak.. and I was all excited about getting over 190 on the back straight of the road course (i.e. big track).

There's plenty left in the car. I made a 56.3 around the permiter last year with 100hp more than when I made a 56.2 in '00. I drove like crap last year for several reasons, the biggest being a lack of confidence in the retrofitted Wilwoods and lack of seat time in '00 a contender. But I have the braking problem solved now. As Dr. Bruce said, "the rear lines could be puffing up like bullfrogs." Ribbit.

ADAM

hmmm we were lapping with the kink going clockwise...so it was not much of a straight...but 200kph on the DDT is fast...real fast

I believe that it was a car control school that the integra rolled at

i don't believe the driver of the type R was actually in the school.. he was a part of the lapping day only group
