View Full Version : What I learned at autocross today: PITL#3 - 2005

1) Your worst day autocrossing is better than your best night in Emergency. :(

I hope y'all had fun today. Here's hoping I can get back in the saddle for WOSCA next weekend...

Yeah, I'm okay, just some wacky neuro-vascular problems I need to get worked out. Even if I hadn't got home at 3:30AM, the kaleidoscope-vision I was having probably wouldn't have helped me today. On the other hand, considering my driving lately, maybe it would've..... :D

Yeah, yeah, according to the doctor, I'm apparently afflicted by a weird form of migraine headache that causes temporary, partial blindness (I just thought it was too much coffee or something, 'cause the headaches themselves were never very bad).

Last night, a strange confluence of triggers caused an unusually acute and sudden attack that left me with vision like a kaleidascope (or scrambled porn). Scared the hell out of me - I thought I was having a stroke or something! :D

Nothing serious, though, according to the doc.

Holy guy I saw you crossing the bridge last night(I waved and was with the wife and dog) what did you do hit your head on your roll bar?

Oh and taking Vigra isn't good for you anymore lot os guys on the news going blind :)

1. When you have 4 fuel cell energy drinks in the afternoon, you crash really really hard at night.
2. Seat time rocks! :D

1. Brent's car is FAST, I however, am not. ;)
2. First time auto-xing in 8 months or so, and the first thing that hits me is the same as the first thing that hit me 3 years ago: It's not the cars, it's the people that make these days so much fun.
3. V.....7......1.......0. Oft repeated, praised and lamented, but I've never driven a car with so much stick. Of course, the previous 'sticky' tires I'm used to are Azenis. :D My first run, I turned INTO the cones....got steering response?
4. I want, no, NEED my car back on the road. I'm 15minutes worth of work from having it running, but waiting for parts can be a pain. It better be worth it.....
5. No matter how many times I watch her run, seeing Opal in her Insight will always be like watching a movie with the mute button on. Almost eerie...

I had that problem too...but I can't blame the tires. :o

Great event with a fun and challenging course!

1) It can be fun to let other people drive your car.

2) People who are used to driving on R's will be surprised by the first tight corner they try to navigate in a 3000+lb Azenis shod vehicle

3) Raw Energy makes you drive faster. Scott proved that to me so I had to jump on the bandwagon

4) 8 timed runs by 3:30 makes for a good day

5) Derek is less entertaining on V710's

Ya, that was us on the way to NYG. I probably should have been letting the wife drive. I was still kinda dizzy at that point, which is why I didn't wave back - needed two hands on the wheel driving through the construction!

Eight timed runs before 3:30PM!!! Cripes, did I ever pick the wrong event to miss!! How many people showed uP?

P.S. - I don't need Viagara, although I've been told a good dose of salt peter once in a while would be appreciated by others in the house.

Looked to be about about 50-60% of the normal turn-out. It was occasionally difficult to finish mashaling before having to prep to get in the car again.

Cheers!

8 runs before 4. You basically finished marshalling, and then you got into the car again....

35 sec course helped too of course....

1) Insane fast + brakes = fun
2) Ride height is good.... can JTB be right for a change?
3) 16 runs with new TB, is a good thing....
4) 710's are the new "must have toy"....
5) 13's still look good....
6) 3 raw engery drinks can provide interesting humour... but definately lead to crashing on the body later.
7) Opal's not a lot of balast

Dave,

- Miatboi needs to be renamed "Pylonpulverizer" :D
- It is great being ultra competitive on 710s but just like watching me (Brad) it also isn't as "fun" to drive.
- Eric has porno vision now! Wait till he gets hold of some of those WICKED Raw Energy shooters
- Hated the course during walk-thru but managed to pull a respectable time out of my ass.
- Do I have to put "Krushweiser" in my sig now?
- Been a LONG time since I have seen a front wheel drive set FTD at a PITTL event, congrats Brian

Who set FTD? And in what? (can you tell I had to go home early?)
The event ran VERY smoothly. Very good job!

yep, when you put V710s on no matter what you've driven on before you'll realize that you've been turning in too early

1. Married what? The Thong is still one of the best course designers around! Just don't put him anywhere near the timing computer ;)
2. 0.059 seconds is an eternity
3. 34.4 seconds is not
4. LCD monitors are a MUST for timing
5. I owe Beeler a coupla beers....at least!
6. Note to self: secure or remove window crank before run

Brian L. in the Integra set FTD with a run of 34.414s

Enrollment was 66 cars. The quick course allowed a car to be sent off every 20s or so...hence the 8 runs.

(1) I'm not a lot of ballast :D

(2) A power nap between runs, while slightly embarassing, apparently preps you for your personal FTD

(3) It's all audience: the HADA folk are behind my inclination to upgrade to a S2000, but the MSOC folk, of course, are prompting me to look at used Miatas. So many cars... so little time (and so little funding).

(4) Don't ever make a Tim Horton's run without doing a walk-around to find out if anyone else wants something. Forgetting the walk-around will earn you many dirty looks.

(5) Trying to hold 40 psi in a tire with your thumb doesn't work so well.

(6) The gang saved my arse by having the right paranoia gear in their kits. Mental note: buy valve stem core tool-widget-thingy (they're going to LOVE me at Canadian Tire tonight). Also, hand out treats to those who participated in the arse-saving at next PITL event.

(7) It's really satisfying to have a great end of a run and beginning of a run consistantly. If only I could have gotten the middle part figured out

That's not necessary, Opal... thanks for the offer, though... it was my pleasure taking care of your arse this weekend.

If Cdn Tire can't figure out what you're babbling on about... send a PM to Finboy... I think he may be able to get you a complimentary one... just for you.

McDoom is REQUIRED to use Opal as ballast for ALL RUNS... as the 2 of them combined = a "normal" driver.

The valve in the stem is called a "Schrader valve" therefore the tool should be called a Schrader valve wrench.

Knowledge? Peeler, has Knowledge? Of something other than "certain dance locations?" Really?

I think you'll get further with the "tire-valve-stem-thinkie" too... Knowing what the service can be like in different crappy tires.....

Hey, thanks much! :)

Thanks also to Scott at can-alignment in Milton for doing a great job setting up the corner weights and alignment before the event.

1. When walking the course, take note of areas where the car might not be straight and stable before going between curbs.

2. You can go from "Da Man" to "Grandma" in about as much time as it takes to Marshal.

What I learned today

1. Boost is addictive as long as you can control it.
