View Full Version : What I learned at regional #4 (COMP)
1. It's possible to attend 7 different events on the same day: dizzle event, rain, event, monsoon event, cloudy event, slightly damp event, sunny as hell event, wet-sponge-humid event.
2. A mid-afternoon power nap is definitely a good idea.
3. Grasshopper is still learning.
4. Rob could make a sailor blush.
5. Hanif makes me wonder if we shouldn't invoke some sort of golf handicap-like set up in HS.
6. Foot to the floor!
7. Sometime the pedal in the middle is under-recognised.
8. Tire changes are much faster when you put the tire on the correct side of the car on the first attempt.
Edited to fix the title. Doh! Thanks Ivano. I TOLD you English majors can't count... always check my math, people.

1) the regional series needs an official DB meter....
2) 5 thousandths of a second is fun to play with
3) huh where'd he come from????
4) Super powers should be turned off for events Hanif... I'm sure it's in the rules somewhere.. that goes for side kicks too Pete ... Pax distoryers... ouch...
5) rain will happen and V710s are still the best tire :p
6) lets run in numeric order ...1, 6, 7, 8, 12, 18, 3, 5, 9, 10, 67, 68, 69, 20, 22, 24....is it that hard to figure out who your after and make sure your lined up behind them? wasn't there a rule about being denied a run if you weren't in order after the first run? that used to be the case....make the day go quickier to issue DNSs (note: this comment is not directed at those that have 2 drivers and have a mandatory waiting period that places them out of order)
7) a school bus at all the events would be super handy...
8) well thats the last regional event for me till after my one lap of canada trek....it's been fun so far....I can't wait till I'm at the SPDA event and then the HADA event that will be a great way to end off the trip
9) well Ivano seems to have stepped to the plate... welcome to FSS winner's circle and congrats.
10)someone has to invite side walk chaulk that doesn't coem off easily in the rain... but that can still be removed when the event is over...

1. I liked the course except for my first run(off course)
2. I like my 048's

Grand Bend didn't get rained out, the guy in WOSCA that always finishes 2nd to me won both the slalom, the SAE car did show-up and the gymkana and nothing got rained out... unless you count the wet-t-shirt contest.

when marshalling the closer your are to the bus the sooner you are relieved.
when raining, tarps help to keep stuff dry.
when sunny, tarps help to keep stuff wet.
a barely open window + wipers on = lots of water spilling onto the door handle and down the inside of the door
frs's would have been really nice for the far away stations
rotation = fun (sometimes)
full tread v710's are pretty decent in the wet

1/ I now understand the power of the 710
At the height of the rain, Hanif suggested I try the 710s and offered his.
seemed counterintutitive to go from a treaded A032 to a "slick" in the rain - however I was faster by ~0.6xx than the earlier "dry(er)" run ,2.x faster than the previous wet one
and as it got less wet, the car went faster and faster
I am still in shock and awe!
2/ Hanif is a evil man - a crack dealer - (go fast crack - see above)
and a destroyer of the pax - "pax you are my biatch today" - if it was not said, it must have been thought.
3/ The Bus is a small slice of timing and registration heaven - and when things get nasty, it is like a 5 star resort - (without the bar)
4/ Hearing about some of the tight battles from the timing area was cool, like I got to take part in all of them, not just my own.
5/ DSP is a tough class to unwittingly end up in :( !
6/ It sucks that at the halfway point I have 2 events completed, and will maybe only make 2 more before the end of the year. - have a crappy event - no big deal, do well - it hurts.

I learned that EVERYBODY is willing to give one more dry-run a shot... with the hopes / realistic chance of bettering their best time...
THEN... if they don't, or their competition is faster than them... THEN they complain.
IF you run the run... and it is an announced official run... then you do not have the right to complain afterwards.
And if you thought that the cones were not in the correct spot WHEN you are running... as per the rule book.... you may stop on course, verify, and have the cones put back to their pos. and get a re-run.
You can not finish your run... wait to see competitor outcomes... and then make a "weenie-protest" (complaint) after the fact / spilt-milk fashion.
You can have it any one way... not both.
Anyhow... This has the potential to get ugly... so we'll leave it in Wes' capable hands...
I just know that we have rules for these sorts of things... and run 6 was an unfair one... that's pretty clear... but other than that... I see no problem.
and run 6 was an unfair one... that's pretty clear
Not trying to fuel the fire here, but in all seriousness, could someone please tell me where/how the course was different?
I honestly didn't see a difference, and I'm high enough up in the grid order, I guess I should have.

I didn't notice a difference myself.... but in all honesty... I was in a bit of a daze yesterday... so wasn't at 100% focus / concentration... I'm just going by what a few of people said... and I'm taking their word. IF that's the case... then some in 6 had a different gate than others.... but having said that... IF it was "different"...
...WHY was it put BACK different at the end of 6???? I mean they had like 12 people out there inspecting and mega-chalking!
IF part of 6 truly was different... there is a case to be made about run #6... that's all I can see... everyone had a fair shot at the course that was mega-chalked on run 7....
We'll see.... but I stand by my earlier post. In the sport... you do not have the luxury of competing during a run... finishing... seeing how you did and how your competition did... and THEN complain. Don't work that way... it's one of the core rules that defines our sport.
Wes is the man however... HE is in a crapy spot right now having to make a decision. This is not fun... and makes the "job" really unattractive... so he'll make a ruling... and that's it.

The dual coned gate near the top was wiped out by Andrew and theree were no signs of where the cones were originally, not but one of the other guys decided that where he decided to put the cones was the best place. We then watched a couple cars go threw including Dan and thats when it was obvious that something wasn't 100% right. Cliff then stood by the green golf and inbetween a couple cars looked at the course and tried to get it to where it seemed tight like it originally was.
Maybe there should be a new course rule that states all cones should be marked by that spray paint(not a complete line just the little dots on each corner) and then draw lines around the cone like normal. Earlier when I was out there you could go by the sand that got traped by the cone base and put it to atleast the spot that someone else may have put it earlier.
1. When you have little choice in tire decisions and you hear all the chit chat from the other drivers about which tires to pick you can feel a little left out.
2. These BFGs are no count in the wet but I do love driving in the rain. wheeeee!
3. Marshaling next to a metal post and seeing big lightning makes one consider moving away from said lightning rod.
4. Some days you don't envy the dedicated race cars with no windows or hoods.
5. Forgetting to close the sunroof when marshaling makes #4 a moot point.
6. Sometimes when you rush to get into the proper order you then sit there for extended periods and watch many lower numbered cars come around at the last minute. And they can still be out of order.
7. Run 6 had an ever changing course but that is normal in the rain. That's why we ran a #7. Seemed fair to me.
8. Hybrid cars can actually be heard when they are slinging water.
9. Some cars sound the same in the rain, loud..
10. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can. almost.

That's completely at the discretion of the lot owners. Chances are GO would not allow permanent paint on their lot.
A better idea would be GPS transponders in each cone
A cheaper idea would be to ban Cordeiro ;)

In this "amateur motorsport" we are ALWAYS at the mercy of our fellow competitors to call off-courses, replace cones back and even notice all cones nudged... this is our sport. This stuff happens more than you think... a car nudges a cone on the other side of where the marshals are... and it's not called... and left there for 25 cars, etc.
I believe that at Bronte... they are not allowed to use spray paint...
Drywall sticks are a problem in the rain...
That's ok...
I believe that we've learned something... from now on... the clubs... ESP in poor conditions... will need to use either sidewalk chalk (supposedly Hanif likes the pretty pastels that these come in...) or wax crayons...
That will help ensure that similar things don't happen again...
This Sunday was not ideal... but I think it's still within the norms of our sport... esp once it was set back up / normalized / standardized for run 7.
To be perfectly honest... if you had GOOD competition in your class...and you drove well when you HAD to drive well... Run 2 and run 7 were the fast runs. That's it! Run 6 for some could turn decent times... On poor-weather days... it's ALL about being able to go FAST... when you have to... it's a different aspect of the sport.
Makes it interesting.. a bit of a twist.

This is not a guaranteed fix.
After having a few “rain” events in the last 2 years, we tried the non-permanent spray paint – sidewalk chalk – and wax crayons. None of these options lasted the full day.
A solution could be that the course be re-chalked after every run group. If we feel need to reduce the course variation in the rain
IMHO the course is never 100% the same in the rain and usually the difference is minimal. The changing weather conditions were a bigger factor than the small change to the course.
When the 7th run was announced, and Wes proclaimed that there would be “no more rain” my comment to those around me was “don’t f-up this run!” and that was more due to the weather than to course variation.
In terms of run order, again the rain is a factor, the run after the halt for lightning can be excused but after that we should be in order –I personally don’t have an issue with someone being a car or 2 late… but deliberately waiting until later in the run group is unfair, if conditions were reversed and rain was starting car # 121 can’t pull up randomly to the front of the field and say I’d like to go now!

Sorry, I did want to attend, left all the gear in the car and everything, but by the time I got home (4am).. I was pretty sure I wasn't going to be registering in 4 hours. When I woke at 9:30, briefly, I almost got up, then remembered it's a regional event with a stricter registration period, so I went back to bed.. for another 3+ hours. When I woke at 12 and found out it was raining, I felt very content in the course of my actions. :) Though I was a little perturbed at 3 when the sun came out. Ahhh well.

That's quite tech-y. Damn, that was exactly what I was listening to back then, but I never heard that CD. Hrm. Kinda makes me want to download it and listen, but I'm worried I'll start grinding my teeth or rolling my eyes back or something. <sigh>
I've been listening to house/techno and most of their variants since the house special on MuchMusic in 88 or 89, which introduced a lot of us to house. Or maybe it was Dave's Dance Music on 88.1 on Sundays from 1-4. I thought it was okay, until Fast Eddie and Tyree Cooper and the Jungle Brothers started doing hip house. I was a big hip hop head (or at least as big as a hip hop head you could be at 12).
Those were the good old days. When the music was still fresh and new. Most of it sounds like crap now, but so did hip hop back then. Or the good old days during the first half of the 90s when it splintered and splintered and splintered. And the second half where it became refined and extremely well produced. That was awesome!
Unfortunately most developments since 2000 have been relatively minor. It's too bad, but really... where else could the music go? I mean sheeit, it's even cannibalizing it's self with all the remakes and samples and early house feel in a lot of the tracks these days. Or 80s samples? Maybe I'm just getting too old, but disco was cool because none of us actually listened to it when we were kids. But it just sounds weird to hear house versions of crappy new wave tracks.
It's good to hear people who are/were into it as well. I was beginning to wonder if those years of partying with thousands of people was all just a dream. Or that everybody from back then is either still stuck in that scene, or became indie rock kids, or never really wanted to be there in the first place. I have friends who used to party with me who definitely don't seem like they ever were there. They're just so far removed from those days that even when you bring up things from then they're all like "what? Oh yeah, that was funny", but now if they hear any of the music they're like WTF? Unless it's some dark drum 'n bass with MCs and stuff. Maybe that's a Scarborough thing though.
WTF was that post about? I need a nap or something.

Holy shit man. Talk about off topic, but you just opened up a whole can of worms.
I've been into house since 1988 also, back when CKOC had 'live-to-airs' from Starrs in Burlington. I was 13, and we used to tape them. And guess what? I have Fast Eddie, Jungle Brothers and Tyree Cooper("Tyree Cooper..the producer...bust some super-duper trooper") on vinyl. Since we're on Hip-House, lets not forget Richie Rich, Mr. Lee, Doug Lazy and Simon Harris.
Then there's the early house, like Ten City, Masters at Work, Inner City etc. I loved it all; every minute of it. My whole life, I've been constantly waiting for that next big track, and they kept coming. Early 90s(OHM "Tribal Tone", Bucketheads "The Bomb", Gusto "Disco's Revenge", it was all good. Mid 90s and speed garage; remember that?(Loop da Loop{Loop da Loop remix of Todd Terry's "Something Goin On" was the epitome}and Armand van Heldon remixing everything). The last 90s was the golden era of house music. When it was blowing up everywhere, and the raves were massive(remember Connected 99?). Angel Alanis and Olav Basoskit could do no wrong(Hatiras "Spaced Invader" was genius). Dj Dan, Terry Mullin(where'd he go?), Carl Cox, Tim Patrick still rocks.
I'm sure you've figured out that I'm a dj; or at least WAS, until all my money went to cars instead of records. I've got about 400 pieces of vinyl now...mostly from 1995-2000, but quite a bit of classic house too. I've also got about 10 gigs of house music on my computer. I collect mixes from Dj Dan, Carl Cox, Bad Boy Bill, Roger Sanchez, plus this and that's from any good DJ.
I like Tech-house, Funky house, Disco and Tribal in addition to all the old stuff. So yeah, I'm one of the thousands of 'ravers', but one of the few who hasn't forgotten. I listen to house, and only house. Yes, it's hard to find good house now. This 'neo-wave' stuff doesn't quite cut it. Daft Punk's latest album is junk, although Homework was genius. I'm 30 years old, and I still 'grind my teeth' every once in a while.
Personally..I like the fact that house has gone back underground. It's a music that is made for the music. There's no fame nor fortune to be had, although some DJs got $10,000 just for showing up at some events, those days are long gone. There's no pretentious lyrics or politics involved. It's a music made to make you 'feel' and dance.
I apologize to everyone for having to read what must look like another language, but you'll all get over it. Just like you'll all get over Sunday's event.
Black crack just changes forms - first vinyl, now rubber.
Ah...almost feels like another life, but what a life it was. No regrets and I sure as hell don't want to ever forget it. Can't say I was ever a house-head though...could tolerate it towards the morning, but detroit techno was more my pace; was also into tech-house. Late 90s were definitely enjoyable...damn I miss Industry. Also 30, and occasional tooth-grinder.

What I learned at COMP:
1) Arrive earlier to register (Thanks Todd for the warning, thanks Tony for letting me register)..... returning from a vacation makes one lazy. :)
2) For the first event of the year, I really do need to practice more often. Being in FSP this year does not help
3) I have come to the conclusion that I really do dislike the rain.... thank goodness I listened to my mom in the morning and took an umbrella at least, or I would have ended like Josh (soaked).
4) Did I mention that I need to practice more often?
Holy tangent... Apparently I didn't even discover this stuff until what you guys are calling the last few good years (I didn't figure I was the youngin', but apparently I was wrong).
Came at it from the trance side of things, but the older I get, the more minimalist I like my music, and the more I lean into house. Fortunately, the DJ in my basement keeps me supplied :D
I'm guessing there's going to be a great story telling and music swap going on at the next event, eh?

I was absolutely stunned with the amount of grip the v710s gave in the rain. With 12 events on them (6 events with two drivers) I would have though the water shedding properties of the v710 would be close to nil, but I had extremely high levels of grip and more importantly, very consistent grip.
Shane's experience would tend to agree with me. Marshall went the other way though. Maybe the 215 section width is too wide for our Civic's in the rain?

LOL for the three 30 year old ex ravers!
Damn Gen1GT! You've got those on vinyl! I had a buddy in grade 8 when they came out who bought them. I was stupidly still into hip hop and instead of making wise purchases like that I was buying De La Soul and Ultramagnetics and Queen Latifah. Haha. At least I recognized Prodigy's Smack My Bitch Up sample! But I kicked myself after. I found Fast Eddie's album in Play de in 95 or so, but it had flaws. :(
Damn, those were some ARESOME records! Or Ian Pooley with that Tyree sample "bass and boy it's bangin'... bass bass bass bass bass... bass and boy it's bangin'". Ahhhhhh! Disco's Revenge is still an all-time classic of mine! Or Mood II Swing... that other sublime track of theirs that BLEW my mind completely when I first heard it at Buzz on Spadina before it became Comfort Zone. Or Green Velvet Preacherman on the green vinyl. Or that Delerium party with Cajmere, but just before he came on Kenny Glascow played almost EVERY track off Homework, which had just come out that Thursday! Damn those were good days!
I was DJing as well... since 93ish, but I had trouble staying with one style of music. Probably because I wasn't grinding my teeth regularly until 97 or 98. The first citrus Science Centre party, whenever that was. I started playing progressive/trance, even though I really wanted to do jungle. My buddy convinced me that drum 'n bass was dying. Haha. From there I did breaks, because they were somewhere in between the two styles. Then one day they disappeared for some reason (maybe because every track DJ Icey came out with was the same). I remember Marcus from Delerium was talking about bringing him out to play, but he was afraid to fly. Afraid to fly!?!
From there I (obviously?) graduated to techno. I covered all the way from hard Jeff Mills type Tresor Christian Vogel shit to booty-tech to Detroit to Adam Beyer to Oliver Ho type shit. Yeah, I was lost, until that Science Centre party, where I started dancing instead. And all I listened to was techno. My most memorable parties were Juan Atkins @ Phryl, and oh yeah, Christian Smith at Phryl for Connected in Cleveland! We were nuts enough to drive down there instead of staying for Connected in Toronto because we wanted to see Kenny Ken instead of whoever was playing here. But after rolling and redding I heard Christian Smith and fell in love with techno all over again.
Damn. I'm just getting started. I forgot how many years I spent doing that! It seems so long ago!
Around 1999/2000 I heard Naked Music's Nude Dimensions series and that completed the transition back to house... just on the mellower side. That whole sexy yummy gooey goodness. And from there to broken beat, nu jazz, neo soul, and now I don't even know what anymore. It's kinda diffused.
But I still listen to more house than anything. Before and after everything, house is what started it, house was always there, and house is still there. I guess drum 'n bass has always been around too, but that's actually progressed even less than anything else lately.
Sheeit. Talk about a can of worms!

You know Opal, getting more minimal is sorta a getting older trend I think. I mean I even touched on a week where I listened to straight-up stupid gabber, and while there was no happy hardcore at the time, the actual proto-jungle hardcore I was listening to was pretty damn close. It's the same way when you're young you love to be inundated with bright colours and flashing lights, while once you're older you can stare at a piece of art for hours at a time.
I'm up for some trading for sure! But my collection is pretty scattered and very large. If anyone has a spare 80 gig or so drive. Yeah, that's about the size of my collection. Haha. Definitely not all house. Probably 40% house, 10% techno, 10% drum 'n bass, 10% broken beat 10% hip hop and 20% other.
Oh yeah, and Hanif, I haven't forgotten about sending you that drum 'n bass, it's just awkward to send to your gmail. I'll burn you an mp3 CD for the next event.

So you're obviously the guy in the white Type R right B18C5. We'll have to talk at the next event. I've got 5 disks of MP3s from when I transfered the music from my old computer. I'll bring them along next event so you can borrow them.
I'm old, sometimes I learn things after the event.
1. Long detailed discussions about music choices and music history has me wondering what site I'm on.
2. When "The good old days" is *after* my time and all the sub genres mentioned sound the same, I must be old.
3. "Stealing samples from each other" is ironic, I thought all that music was plagiarism.
4. I listened to James Brown on the grid.
5. Disco sucks.
:D
Oookay, back on topic:
The 710s seemed to do really well in the rain, which doesn't make sense to me given the lack of tread to shed water.
Leading me to the question of:
How does one choose appropriate tires for the rain? Are 710s some sort of trump card tire that just do everything well, and therefore don't use them as a indicator that tires are multipurpose?
Yes, I know I'm showing my newbie stripes here, but I'm serious.
How in heck do you figure this out without going bankrupt?

Gen1GT, B18C5 drives a yellow S2000 and hasn't actually made it to a regional yet - bad, Geo, bad!
I believe the integra driver is Brian.

edited to fix the 701 typo. Eeesh, I can use a semi-colon correctly under pressure, even use proper punctuation when drunk, but can't get three freaking numbers in the correct order.

i see that opal has lots of problems with numbers.. 701's?
Is that a new secret tire?
kidding aside it seems the very soft 710's and Hoosier as305 do have good wet grip, but not good standing water grip. If we had run during that torrential downpour the grip would have disapeared as there is no where for the water to go. Both of these tires have 2 narrow grooves that willl disapate some water, but when there are puddles or real deep water we are in trouble. Hoosier does make a rain tire that is just as sticky as the as305 but it has grooves to shed the water.
Ultimately you would have a set of wet and dry tires but it only rained once last year so how cost effective is it?

it's very cost effective Tony...
for example I have a set of A032R's and set of V710s... the A032Rs are the wet tires the V710s the dry tire...
why is it cost effective .. I use the wet tires in the dry during events where my standings won't effect my regional standing. Therefore allowing the V710 to last longer and only be used for dry regional events.. and wet events where there is no standing water...

This weekend was my first competition with my new exhaust...
And honestly... the "throttle response" is night and day...
I did increase the diameter from the header-back... but personally I believe that MOST of the restriction was previously in the OEM cat.
Replaced it with a hi-flo unit... night and day.
I wouldn't DARE go catless.... look outside... look at that smog... go breathe that toxic coctail...
Couldn't in good conscience go catless... but a hi-flo cat can really help responsiveness of a s/c'd car... and unleash SIGNIFICANT hp on a turbo car...
And you can still pass emissions.
Of course I have to thank http://www.NoyzBoyz.com for their recomendations of a hi-flo and a Magnaflow resonator... no nasty droning.
2 FTD's - must be a good exhaust!

I had to go with a high flow cat becuase the stock one plug it self from the higher flow of exhaust gases, costing me my original engine. I guess I should have put it in when I put the header in.

Most peopld don't do nearly as many events as you Jason. For someone like me who only plans to do regionals and maybe a pro-solo, one set of tires is the most cost effective way to do things. ;)

I believe the rule book covers most of this stuff...
We are to look to the rule book firstly....
THEN to others if there is some need for clarification afterwards...
"D. Official Number of Runs
There shall be a minimum of three (3) timed runs for each competitor at each event. There shall be no practice or course testing runs for any competitor being scored in the event. Competitors shall have the opportunity to walk the course prior to commencement of the event. The last run must be announced to each competitor, before the competitor starts their final run."
"K. Downed Pylon Exemption
If a course pylon displaced by a previous competitor is not replaced before the current competitor reaches to that portion of the course on a timed run, the competitor must stop his vehicle at, or as near as safely possible to, the displaced pylon in order for a re-run to be granted. If a competitor continues, his time will count for that run and a pylon penalty may likely be assessed in error."
"O. Basis for Scoring
The fastest time recorded for a competitor shall be used as the basis for scoring. If a tie exists, event organizers may only break this tie for the purpose of awarding trophies."
"Sportsmanship
While the right to protest in proper cases is undoubted, it should be remembered that solo events are sporting events, to be conducted in a sporting manner, that all events are organized by volunteers who cheerfully give of their time and do their best; that the competitors should expect some imperfections of the organizers and fellow competitors; and that to a reasonable extent, these are part of the chances taken when Canadian Automobile Sport Clubs – Ontario Region Solo II Rulebook entering the competition. Competitors are encouraged to discuss the problem with fellow competitors before lodging any formal protest. See Appendix E.
Any protest or appeal shall follow the procedures as defined in the CASC-OR GCRs except in Solo II the Solo II Director and steward may be pro-active in the enforcement of rules without receiving a protest. The protest fee shall be $50.00, the fee shall only be returned if the protest is deemed well founded or if so directed by stewards of the event. The Appeal fee shall be $100.00, the fee shall only be returned if the appeal is deemed well founded or if so directed by stewards of the event. In all cases, $15.00 of a protest fee, $25.00 of an appeal fee shall be retained by CASC-OR.
Any protest must be delivered to the event steward before the completion of the event (which is the completion of the last competition run). Protests regarding car classifications must be delivered to the event steward before the start of the 3rd heat (to allow the event steward to investigate details while the cars and drivers are still available)."
Look at all of those sections... and tell me that it doesn't paint an obvious outcome.
What is... is.

1.1 Being tired I didn't do any fun runs.
2.1 I must have been really tired as it turns out I actually ran 2 fun runs.
3.1 Not sure what the point of a run 7 was. Oh, for fun.
4.1 I'll pick different music next time. Disco sucks.

Why do these comments not suprise me, coming from a guy with a mullet.
It isn't a mullet! It's a "tail". You youngins don't remember the dark ugly days when mullets were as cool as a buzz cut is these days. No, I didn't have a mullet back then, I had a tail... I had long hippy hair at one time which people like Tony and Wes might recall when it was in style. At least I can still have long hair if I wanted to.... ;)
Was it Samson that wouldn't cut his hair as he thought it would zap his strength? That's me, I might go even slower with short hair. Or perhaps I'd be more aerodynamic with a shiny head. Naww, I'm keeping this hair as long as nature lets me. Too bad the ladies don't like it.
I just want to get Zen for the TAC regional and forget that last Sunday ever happened. I'm having a flashback already... And disco always sucked.

And although a buzz cut is a clean looking decent hairstyle, it's far from being a cutting edge style the 'metrosexuals' are wearing...lol
