For those interested BARC Member Tommy Mechan has offered up the Dunnville Autodrome for free lapping Saturday August 20 from 9am to 4pm. You can bring whatever you want to try on the track. Street cars, race cars, whatever. Yes there is a catch. You need to email me at crusher45 AT powergate DOT ca to get your name on the list on or before 6pm Thursday August 18. Everyone registered will be eligible.

Also for those who would like to try a race car, they have one for rent at $20 for 5 laps.

I do not know the set up but I know free works well for me.

For those who don't know the facility go here http://www.dunnvilleautodrome.com/

Great idea...

We will see what sort of response we have to this but 80 is the max. It is open to everyone also regional racers so look out for the big toys. Maybe an ice racer or two. Even a Yugo or a bug eyed sprite.

I just realized why the overhead photo looks familiar! There was a 3-day rave there back in 2000, the World Electronic Music Festival, or WEMF. The camping area was where the racetrack is now, and since it was an old airport, you can still see the runways. The main aircraft hanger was the main stage area, and the doors were left open.

Started Friday at noon, ended Sunday at 5...no sleep... :D

I believe tha Dunneville is said to be... and also would appear to be... tough on brakes.

I BELIEVE that others have smoked their stock pads pretty easily while beating on a Mini... and replacements seem harder to come by... I believe Hawk makes stuff though.

I've got a set of shaved 225/45/15 V700's that would work for hammering on if interested??? $350

Silly question: what are the safety standards this lapping day will be sticking with? Riders? Helmets? Other 'goon's' the track? Not having done this before, I have some (mild) apprehension...

Also, while I've been planning to buy a helmet for a while now, will I need one for tomorrow?

While I'm sure any CASC member run lapping day will be safely organized, it would be prudent to know some rules ahead of time. An open track "pass anywhere" policy is certainly not rookie friendly.

It's the same as Solo I.
Car has to be safe.
Lapping will be set up by Tommy Meechan.
Riders - yes.
Helmets? Well driver's need something to contain there egos and their head. YES.
Most goons race on nice industrial streets at 2am. Any infractions here and they are reported to their insurance company.
Show up, if you don't like what you see then leave. No one is asking you or demanding you to go out there for free laps. That just means more time for someone else.

I was so hoping I would be able to drive the champ lite cars but so many people and so little time, ohwell free lapping doesn't hurt unless you do something stupid(go off on corner 1 two or three times and then do it again and hit a big white bail). Thanks again Tommy for a good day out.

Dave
08-21-2005, 01:47 AM
Yes, thanks Tommy and thanks Crusher!

BrentW, Dunnville is not a typical road course in that it puts a huge amount of heat into the brakes because of all the fairly fast straights with very sharp/slow corners at the end of them. There isn't enough time between heavy braking zones for the braking system to cool down, so the heat just keeps on building. At Shannonville and Mosport and just about any other road course I've ever been to (and I've been to many), there's enough cool down time between heavier braking zones that it's far less of an issue. Dunnville is just murder on brakes, plain and simple, especially if you're on a street pad or mild performance pad.

Ego... fun-factor... and "because it was there" I assume. (in fact.. .it was so cheap... that the "barriers to entry" was so low that it didn't weed out only the most serious... I'd have paid $300 - $400 for my experience. Even that can't be beat.... and at even half of that price... it would have weeded out the whimsical ones... but not the maniac with $$$... so can't stop them all! :D

I took off early... and don't know what happened... but honestly said... that with that lineup of people waiting... they OBVIOUSLY didn't ALL know how to control a car well... and MOST were FWD drivers... and they were not checking for race licenses or high powered rwd experience... so the potential was certainly there for Darwin to raise his ugly head....

Seems that everyONE was fine... that's good...

Any other drama / "offs"?

I think that Dunneville would be really fun in a low-powered momentum car. You'd be severely penalized if you scrub too much speed! Like an low-powered H-stock - C-Stock car!

In a hi-po car... it COULD he tough on brakes... but in the formula car... it was fun too...

WISH there were more sweepers.... but there were a couple of them... and the "land-change" / chicane was a BLAST flat-out shifting into top-gear on the main straight!

Pretty cool getting into a formula car... SEEING yourself as Senna in the cockpit... then closing your eyes and hearing "Jackie Stewart" give you personal instruction....

 :D :D :p

Dunneville is a great lapping day track... and it's closer than Shannonville for anyone in the the city... and closer than Mosport for anyone west of the city.

They should just sell brake bleeding services and stock lots of stock pads for those casual lappers who want to make it home without having to rely on downshifting to slow the car down! :D

If it was a Formula Renault, it would have been a full carbon fibre body, and the steeringwheel is a full on control panel. Sequential Gearbox too. A very "expensive" car I don't see anyone letting people drive for $20.

He was telling me that it was the PREVIOUS gen of formula renault cars...

tube-frame... h-box etc.
Van Diemen chassis, etc.

There WAS a "current" F.R. car... with sequential gearbox that someone appeared with... sounded GREAT out there!

I think the "Champ Lite" series was comprised of PREVIOUS gen F.R. cars from what little I know / can gather... may be wrong tho... has happened before! :D :D

Hrm... I suppose that's possible, though I thought those champ lites ran a Dodge Neon engine.

Yeah that Formula Renault guy is in HADA. :) He's a lapping day whore. :)

Nice lapping-day beater!
I know a guy who's got one too... M.F. fortune! Too bad they killed the series... and there's MILLIONS of $$$ of AWESOME machines sitting idle. worth pennies on the $$$...

They are LIKE the new Formula Mazda series.. C.F. tubs, etc.

They still run the F.R. in mexico / south america... so some are selling them down there for a bit of $$$ back... :(

Never noticed the motor-make.... but I didn't have any head-gasket failures... so I'm not sure it was from a neon! :D :p

They revved and pulled to 8K+ so it MUST have either been worked over heavily... or it wasn't a neon motor!

I gotta find out the specs (weight and power) of these little cars. From feel??? I'd W.A.G. about 1600 lbs and 170-180 hp????? We'll see how close that is...

460 LBS???
wtf?
TUBES ALONE???
Seems too heavy for just the powertrain... and too light for the chassis.

It wasn't THAT fast!
And the green ones (from Quebec) were faster than the white one... can only imagine it was a limiter... or a different motor.

Well it said 'Renault' on the engine...so I doubt it was from a Neon

Seems that everyONE was fine... that's good...

Any other drama / "offs"?

I had a bit of an off on the last lap, missed a shift going into turn one and stepped the back end out...no damage, just embarassing. But I was getting down into laps in the 1:20:'s (1:20:88) so I was getting a little bold maybe..if the car hadn't been stuttering coming onto the hanger straight I might have shaved a bit over a second off that time.

thanks to all involved for a wonderful event. that it was free blows my mind. everyone was well behaved, there was a few dramatic events (my off at the fist 90degree turn - brake problem) - and an nsx going off right infront of me after the inner back-straight.

thankfully, neither of us suffered any damage. no, wait, i cracked my front lip. that's racing :P

an awesome day. thanks so much.

now, i have about 1.8gigs of pictures that my friend took. i think he'll end up posting them somewhere. i'll let you guys know when and where.

I'm not sure about the power, but I would guess lower than you've suggested because I know the cars are light, and they didn't feel terribly quick in a straight line.

So was there an incident in the Formula cars after I left? I think Soloz is talking about the STI that went off in turn 1, 3 times in 3 laps, finally culminating in hitting a hay bail that was quite some distance from the track! Certainly not the most intelligent driving display I've ever seen. I'm hoping it wasn't anyone I know driving. In fact if it was I'd rather not know.

Until I left I think I had the biggest moment in the Formula cars when I spun in the kink in back (turn 3 I think) and went off making a decent sized mess. Didn't damage the car and managed to keep the engine lit and drive back on, but it was more than a little embarassing.

All in all a very nice day and thanks to those who organized this.

I have never trashed my brakes so quickly before. Changed the pads and bled the system the night before but the brakes were all but gone after 3 sessions.

Only regret is that my size 12 shoes were too big to operate the peddles in the formula cars so I had to pass on that.

Yes, after taking his own car off track several times (the STi) they let him drive one of the Formula cars and he promptly put it through some hay bales before he got to turn 1...pretty much wrecked the car, lost it's nose cone and looks like it might have bent something.

I had a spin at turn one as well, but not nearly as bad...I missed third gear on the downshift and looped the car. A bit embarrasing but no damage.

The car is a Formula Renault 2000. It was raced in the Fran Am series up to this year. Andrew Ranger was in the series and raced against it. I can't remember the driver's name but finished 2nd in two Molson Indy's in Toronto behind Ranger. As for the Tommy, yes he is the Scotsman and wanted everyone to come out and enjoy his track. He is involved in it. I hope everyone had a good time. Send me an email if you want to thank Tommy and I will give them to him at our next BARC meeting September 6th at the Markland Pub in Etobicoke where everyone is welcomed not only BARC members. (Shameless plug for BARC) :D

What a fantastic day. Thanks to Tommy and everyone else involved in setting this up. Everyone I talked to had a blast.

(even the guy who discovered that a 2.4T motor at high rpms in a sweeper = oil starvation. Oil starvation is a bitch.)

I want to thanks everyone who made that day happened. It was very nice to give anybody the opportunity to try a race track, even the inexperienced ones...

I really like soloII but I have to say that this was a lot more fun...and much easier too, for my kind of car soloII is not the best...

I'm really happy and proud of myself that I didn't crash the car or gone off road, that's what I was scared of, but the track was not too big or too fast, so I was happy to see that it was not too dangerous...

I really enjoyed and I think I did pretty good for a 1st time, I wish we could do that all the time but it's too hard on the car, I couldn’t go for a 2nd run because it started leaking oil from the blow off, and we wanted to have brakes for the ride back home! Maybe 15 minutes a session was a little too long...

Is anybody know what was the time for 1 lap, did some of you took their time, I'd like to know...

Again, thank you so much for that wonderful day :)

I was doing 1:19's, though I've done 1:18's in the past. I have one of the faster cars for Dunnville (red Civic hatch with Type R engine, full race suspension, and lots of brakes, race tires). A less modified car on street tires would probably be 10-12 seconds slower, depending on the driver. A well driven car with good brakes and r-compound tires will be in the mid to low 1:20's or better. Dunnville puts a premium on brakes and nimble handling thru the tight corners, so the bigger heavier cars tend to suffer there.

well i had a blast!

i'll see what my times are after reviewing the vid from the cam mounted in my car :D

i found that my car for what it is handled great! the tires held up pretty good and in the wet as well... not much difference in the wet. My brakes were alot of fun the entire day... smoking.. and spongey LOL

i took the formula car out for a boot... and no i wasn't the one who crashed it. but i did spin it out once on the 3rd lap :( but the feel of the car was awesome... for sure something i would like to try/ do again.

all in all this day felt like i was playing grand turismo.. :D

MANY thanks to the organizer!!!!!

i have some pics... anyone wanna host?

Well, I was able to get five laps in at the end of the day. Seeing how quickly my brakes faded to nothing (in the wet!!) makes me think I should do some more upgrades before I go lapping again (although most of you with street cars seemed to be having brakes issues.) It was fun though, I'm glad I was able to get a few rounds in after I patched my poor car up. Hope the oil slick in the paddock isn't too big. Whoops.

Thanks again for the free laps guys!

Blue helmet....
Perma grin once it came off.

First went out in the white car that come apart....

Then a green one that was much stronger. (structurally and motor-wise) - although that one had a problem with the steering rack or the wheel-hub.

I'd love a pic if you have one... I think your girl took a pic...
