According to the interim rules presented at the Workshop the Avon and the Hankook would be considered Uber (smooth surfaces with only circumferential grooves).
Cheers!

Hanif,
Do you know anyone who has tried the A048Rs then?

Hanif,

Yes. They suck almost as bad as the A032Rs :) Glorified street tires, but they would be great for learning on!

WOW.
That blows me away!
I knew about the "uber tire" thing...
But didn't know that it was determined my TREAD PATTERN!!!
OMG!
Perhsps it IS a reasonable representation... based on current product available... but we ALL know that it's ALL compound and construction... not tread pattern...
What if it rains? Change classes?
I suspect that you could take a purpose built rain tire (hoosier dirt-stocker / or Hoosier rain tire) and run it for solo 1 on a light car... as a NON-uber tire... and be DAMN fast without taking pips!
Wow... surprising.
Shave a toyo to 2-32nds... and there's only circumfrential grooves... And that's when it's at it's fastest...

If V710's and Hoosiers take a hit for 5 PIPS then I would expect that rain tires would take the same hit. If not, where is the logic?

Yes, dedicated rain tires (like Hoosier rains) also take the 5 PIPs

It is not just the tread pattern. Currenty, the bi-grooves is a good indicator of "uber" tires. Of course, there if the V710s came with some deeper treads, they would still be "uber" tires. The list be based on proven superiority of the tires.

And just what is the "proven superiority" of the V710 tire?

Just look at the results at the Nationals weekend. GT1 SGT3 and SGT2 all set spectacularly faster new records on V 710s often by a whole class worth.

What are the exact results that you are referring to Dave?
If some competitor ran brand new tires for the last weekend would this not bring about a significant result?
Cheers!

But the Hankook Z214s are new. They have not been proven to be faster than the others.
The V710s and the Hoosiers have race results which you can then say yes it is faster or no it is not faster.
You are now classifying tires based on speculation as well?

Just another piece of "food for thought".
Hoosiers have been around for years. The problem with them was that they were traditionally far too expensive to be a realistic option. Now, with the introduction of the V710 at a price almost identical to that of more traditional R-comps with similar life expectancy we have a problem.
The problem is... tires have finally moved on. They have been essentially stagnant for a few years. Light cars ran Toyos, heavy cars ran Victoracers. Now we are finally seeing some new additions to the game and pricing to suit competition.
So the real question is, if the V710s are faster, last just as long, and cost no more than the other R-comps... why isn't everyone running them? Forget 5 PIPs... go buy the good stuff! I'm not buying last month's milk just because it tasted good last month...
What is going to happen next season with this rule is that V710s will be effectively banned. Who can afford to drop a class when it rains? Or will there be Hoosier rains along side each set of V710s just in case it's wet?
Personally... I say, let's "uber" PIP Avi when it rains. :D

Russ, James and Krispy set new lap records in their respective classes by wide margins over the best times set in their classes either this year or last year by drivers not on "Uber" tires. Note that Chris A and Christian set very good times in event 1 this year in SGT3 and GT1 respectively and were both on "Uber" tires. Comparing these times to last year's times or this year's times of non "uber" tire competitors shows a very wide margin of victory. A real "eye opener" is that Russ , despite being beaten 4 times this year by other GT1 drivers when he was not on uber tires, on "uber" tires. won in events 8 and 9 by setting times that were faster than ever before in SGT3 (with the exception of your son in event 1 on an "Uber" tire). In actual fact on Saturday at event 8 Russ managed to beat Rianns very powerful SGT2 car quite soundly from GT1 and would have placed 3 rd in SGT2 on Sunday behind the series champ (also on Uber tires) in a borrowed car.
BTW Chris, I think your comments are true that tire technology has moved on. OTOH I don't agree that 5 PIPs will make the V710s in effect banned. I for one am still deciding which way to go and except for the issue of transporting rain tires, at this stage I could easily see using V710s (depending on cash flow). Given their performance, 5 PIPs is not out of line at all and some of us feel that 6-7 might be more appropriate, meaning that at 5 PIPs they are a bargoon.
he he...why didnt I buy kuhmo's...cause the hoosiers are quicker :)

what the hell happened at the banquet anyways. How come there are so many rules changes/proposals.
I dont' remember there being this many between the 03 to 04 season when I was researching how to prep my car.

True, but my 4 year old toyos offset that problem. I'm going to run the toyos I ran last season in the begining of the season until I cord them.
