View Full Version : A Down & Up Weekend

Well, this weekend at Shannonville was a mixed bag to say the least. By day's end Sat I was just about ready to pack things in and run away in shame. I was hopelessly frustrated after my runs on Fabi in the wet. I think my confidence in wet traction was shattered after my spin in my first heat and I never trusted the car after that, even though I know it was ME and not the car that had no traction.

Sunday was a whole different ball game. After a decent night's rest I woke up to another damp dismal day. I got out to the track for warm-up thinking that it was going to be another embarassing outing. Apparently I was wrong. It's amazing what some sleep will do. The track was still damp for warm-up but I soon discovered that the Kumhos really DO have wet traction (although Nelson drains far better than Fabi... in most areas). Suddenly my confidence came rushing back and my the first heat I was feeling pretty good. Even when the sky opened up in heat 2 I kept the car on a decent pace and was really impressed by the grip.

Heat 3 was really good and I dropped 2 seconds from my first heat times and was within 1.5s of 2nd place. I know it's a big gap... but I was 4 seconds back of the same car at Mosport. Having had 3 good heats under my belt I decided to push harder for the final session. The front pads were clearly going to be scrap after the weekend so I decided to put the last few mm's to good use. I braked deeper, and cleaned up my line and dropped another 2 seconds off my previous heat as the track was almost completely dry. Unfortunately Colin in his 01 Cobra also picked up the pace, but I closed the gap to 1.1s. Dave in his Z28 was a hopeless 3s out front, but I didn't come prepared to win so I was extremely happy with the day.

I can't wait until Mosport!

For me, that's what it's all about. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, but I always try my best when I'm out there, so who cares? Last year my lack of seat time was beating me to death, but I pushed that out of my mind and just went to have fun, looks like you found the same lesson.

Chris: Sorry I wasn't there to create another target. :) I elected not to bother having no rain tires and this questionable brakes thing. I remember what the MR2 was like at the speed limit on a drive to Cayuga last year when it rained in the morning and the car was just floating everywhere. Course the next event is the same day as the big S2000 meet, so I think I'll miss the 6th as well.

Did your Dad run? How'd he do?

Chris , you did great. It took me quite a bit of time to win the class and considereing you didn't know the track and the conditions were difficult at best you have got to feel good about your first SMP event.

BTW Taylor there were some dry corners from time to time and when the rain came down hard we just ran street tires even though we were just " slip sliddin away "

<-- no street tires.

Okay not exactly correct, I have a set of 14" Dunlop all seasons that are down to the wear bars. They float in the dry at 100km/h on the highway (when the car was stock).

Anyhow, weekend over. Sights on the next one.. well at least the Sunday anyhow.

I definitely missed running against you Taylor. But that just means that I have more seat time. hehehe. :) I'm glad that we're going back to the DDT right away so that I can gauge my improvements quickly. If we just happen to run the same configurations, all the better.

My dad ran as well. He really picked up the pace as well. He narrowed the gap from 8 seconds at the DDT to just 4 this past weekend. I was really impressed... and a bit nervous. LOL!

Dave,

Do you mind if I hope in with you for a few laps during warm-up at Mosport? I'd really like to see how a "similar" car should be running on the DDT.

Chris , I would be happy to but I lay no claim to knowing the fast line around the DDT . As a matter of fact I would bet Taylor has done more laps there than I but who would want to take a ride in an overboosted 4 cylinder ( unless their name was Adam ) .

I'm pretty confident I can run 55s around the perimeter this year once I get my car completed for August. I take rides in other people's car and give them in my own, I do Solo-1 for fun, so I don't really care if I'm giving someone a tip or something.

Will the 'bird be ready for the DDT? I've been eager to see the car since Event 1. :) Of course, I'm sure you've been MORE eager to get the car on the track.

You know it. I'm pretty sure I'll be there for one DDT event.

I'm kinda hoping we do clockwise next time. Though I did like the layout on the Sunday.

Guys,

If you're looking for a lot of track time on the DDT to get that "unfair advantage" over your competition, HADA is holding a full lapping day on Saturday June 29. See the link for more info...

Looks like this weekend is out for me... we never got a chance to repair the caliper mount from Mosport 2 weeks ago since we just moved. :(
