Anybody know where to get a reasonable priced trailer to tow track tires and a tool box etc to the track? What are you guys using? I have no room at all for track tires in my car.

I believe Canadian Tire sells a really small trailer (4'x4' IIRC) that I've seen several people customize to carry a couple rows of tires or one row and a toolbox. Believe they run about $349 from CT.

Thanks I looked them up. $399+tax for the small one. Sort of expensive since the same ones down in the states go fo $189us.

Thanks for your help.

Are you talking about the oval one with a hinged cover?
I think he bought it used and don’t think they make them any more.
Plus, you would not get 4 tires in it.

I have the Canadian Tire one. I cut the box in half and mounted two poles in the front half for the tires.

Kind of like this one, but the container is in the metal box that I cut in half.

This one is cool as well.

That's the plastic reese transporter I told you about. I've searched and searched for a used one, but I couldn't find any after 2 months of searching so I gave up. Reese stopped making that trailer unfortunately.

I was at canadian tire today and went to go buy those of those work benches for 60 bucks each. The instructions were horrible. It says to use item 25, 26, 27, screws. Execpt it doesn't tell you which screws were associated with each of those item numbers. I guess that is what you get when you only pay 60 bucks for a box that has all the metal frame and plywood.

Anyhow The cheapest trailer was 499 at the canadian tire I went to. It had a steel frame, 4'x8' and a plastic bed (sorta like a pickup) but only 1.5 foot high sides.

BTW no one makes a rx7 hitch, atleast I can't find one through Reese or hidden hitches website. I think James made his own trailer hitch.

Cheers!

I'll check with Darryl, he's got one on his turbo II car

or you can go the tiretail route...

I picked up one of these, soon after... all my miata buddies got them

works like a charm

The only thing I worry about with those tire tails is the max tounge weight. I think each wheel with tire and wheels is about 40 to 50 lbs. Say it's 50 lbs. What's the max tounge weight a hitch can take for a little miata, s2000 or a rx7?

most max tongue weights on class I hitches is 200lbs, but I have seen a few cars that it's only 100lbs.

That is exactly the same as the one Canadian tire sells. 40-8015-2 $349.99 and the metal box is separate for another 40-8016-0 $129.99
In the spring they usually nock of $100 of the trailer and $30 of the box.

The floor and box can be made cheaper yourself out of wood.

That south sport trailer is nice. Too bad they went out of buisness, I searched and searched for them too summer of 2005 when I started to get worried that if I had a car accident with 4 tires in the back hatch the tires would take my head off.

I was thinking of getting a hitch/trailer for my 944 also... If anyone else finds a good source for this stuff, please update this post.

As an aside, how much equipment do you guys typically take to these events? Aside from tires, jack, jack stands, torque wrench, motor oil, assorted sockets and a few small hand tools, what sort of other items are good to have over the weekend for someone with limited cargo space?

Cheers!

asrt of metric wrenches (small tool box)
craftsman 200 peice socket set
breaker bar
torque wrench
paper towels
gloves
hand cleaner
cig lighter air pump
jack
tarp
cooler
chair (maybe...)
hat
clothes
sun screen

that's about it I think.

I've never seen CDN tire have $100 off their cheapest trailer..... at most was 15%... i was looking also last year and the cdn tire one is $399 reg plus taxes.

Keep in mind this one Product# 40-8015-2 comes with 8" highway rated tires and not 12" compared to the harbourfreight..... I've been looking at theirs for a while and the cheapest one is $169 with 8" tires.... the 12" one for $229 goes on sale quite often..... and the $269US one goes on sale also... I've seen this one for $229US.

How many people are interested in a trailer? I mean seriously interested. Maybe we can find someone to fabricate the frame and make a run for 6+ units. Make it hte same as the south sport trailer. I'm sure I can do up a CAD model no problem. Too bad I don't have a TIG welder and equipment. Some money to be made maybe.

Assuming I could find a source for a hitch since my fabrication skills are crap, I'd be interested...

Oh, and here's a nice tire trailer design I just came across:
http://www.sstrailers.com/racetrailer1.htm

The trailer is apparently running on torsion axles instead of leaf springs. Looks nice too. Shame it's handsomely overpriced at $1300US...

I know for sure I need one. Problem is I don't know of anyone who could make one.

can't someone..

take all the good ideas from all the examples..

design the trailer, and forward it to one of the trailer shops?

or.. buy a plan from princess auto, with a few changes..

piece it together, and take it to a welding shop??

its hard to do cheaply.. that southsport one is way over priced..

but with common materials.. and a good design, there has to be a way
to get a common track trailer made

i'm sure they'd sell at least 2-3 units a year

I see the Grid Nazi is using my name in vain again, Hi Chuck!
The Reese TransPorter trailer that I use is no longer manufactured. They made 2 small plastic clam-shell style trailers, the smaller one was called a Back-Pack (I think).
The TransPorter trailer will hold 4 mounted tires (245/50-16), my jack, a large can of gas, my folding chair, and there is more space for odd-shaped stuff. It is very stiffly sprung so the things get tossed around. I use ratchet type hold-downs and keep my toolbox in the car.
With everything loaded, tires 2 front, 2 back, the tongue weight is less than 40 pounds!
The cost was about $600 from CTC, less 5% discount. More than many people want to spend, however, probably very reasonable for a covered trailer. This is the key thing - to have somewhere dry and relatively cool to store your stuff. Even if you do a build-it-yrself trailer, I highly recommend having some kind of waterproof cover.
Lots of the cars we like to drive have no provision for hitches. On the RX-7, I purchased a Reese Class 1 universal hitch from CTC, and my pal Al figured out a way to mount it from the rear bumper mounts, with a triangulated support back to the frame. It wasn't too easy, but it was done in an afternoon, and it looks great. He was also kind enough to throw some (sort-of) RX-7 coloured paint on it.
Watch out for wheel size on small trailers - mine has 10 inch rims and I will increase those to 12 inch this year if I can find some that fit. At 120 kph on the highway, those tiny 1" bearings are spinning at near-supersonic speeds, and that is the only limitation of the trailer. That, and it's a bit hard to see around :D
Gerry

Finboy,

where did you get the tire tail from for your miata? Talking with a friend he finally kicked some sense into me. Even if you goto 10 track days, and each time you paid a buddy 20 bucks to haul your gear with you. You'd still be ahead money wise...

Yes, it was used for the protege, and I gave him the dimensions that they request on a form they have on their website and he made it up for the Protege. I don't think the cost differed much if any from the regular ones they make.

Well I have been in contact with tire tails. They can custom make them for the rx7. Only problem is that they don't have the proper hitch that is required for the tire tail. (Need at least 200lb tongue weight removable tongue!)

If I can find a suitable hitch i will be using this to get the tires to the track. One main reason is because of how little space is required for this unit :)

Gerry,
Thanks for the input. Will have to see if I can find someone to fab a hitch as well. Looks like I have no choice but to probable go that route.

i'm not sure if it was custom, or direct bolt on

or if its a fixed or hidden/removable tongue style

Saw these two trailers last week.

15 inch wheels and I think the load rating was 1500 lbs. Not cheap at $1,600 but well made galvanized steel and fibreglass lid.

The number for the place is 905 655 2055. On Hwy 7 north of Oshawa.

Cheers!

For $1600 I could pay someone to drive their pickup with my tires, their hotel stay for 2 to 3 seasons and still be saving money.

Agreed not cheap but it can be used for other things with this weight capacity. It is 4x7 and the top comes off. The front and back walls drop and come off for longer loads. 15 inch wheels.

But thanks for the link. If I had money and a spot to keep it it would be nice:)
