I'm an 18 year old planning to start solo2 in spring '06. I have a 1997 mazda protege se. bone stock. My questions are... do i sell out and get something perhaps more competitive? or keep it and run a stock class?
will this slooooow car be at all competitive? I by no means consider myself a great driver, and i'm on a BUDGET (parents aren't helping out).

Any suggestions are welcome regarding my questions or otherwise. Thanks.

Bone stock is the cheapest way to go! If you have any money left over to put into the car, instead put it into performance driving schools. This is your best bang for the buck your first year.

Look for WOSCA, SPDA, and the CASC Solo II schools and put your money into those. You can't do too many schools.

Ian Law AutoX school (http://www.carcontrolschool.com/courses/advanced/index.html)

Aside from the club schools, The Ian Law course is the only one that I know of that is focused on AutoX. It's also inexpensive compared to other professional schools.

It's much easier to learn car control with a car that doesn't have a bunch of mods/goes like stink.I say come on out give it a whirl and have a blast, there are a ton of people that are only too happy to offer advice to speed up the learning curve.

bone stock proteges are good cars to learn in because they have a decent suspension out of the box... slap on some R's and you're laughing... my brother ran a 97 protege in h stock with r compounds one event last year, and he finished a very close second behind hanif (1 tenth behind)... that was his first time autoXing in that car...

so my vote would be to stick with that car as it's been proven that it can perform well!

he was only 3 tenths off the class leader of the class he'd normally run in that day as well...

get Rcompound tires and leave it stock for a year or so getting the feel for the car before deciding what do to with it.. ohh and of course spend the modification money on driver training...

Hey I drive an SE as well. Definitely do a season stock to start out. I would suggest street tires for the first season. And try out events from as many different clubs as possible.

If you like the sport enough then pick a class and mod the car (or get another) according to the rules for season number two.

So performance street tires are best for first season? If i get R's they have to be used for sure, and apparently worn R's are worse than street tires... what's the opinion on this?

Worn R's are still way better than street tires...unless the cords are showing

For the learning experience I would actually recomend cheep tires. Say used all seasons. Even with Rs dont expect to be able to show your car handling skills for the first couple events. Youve got to learn to read the cones and turn your walk throughs into knowing where to go.

So if you have some rims with old tires on them even used up winters use those for the first event.

Used Rs would still be better than streets but way off of being compettitive. So might as well use up some old tires and not even spend on tires untill you try it and see what works. Then decide wich tires to get based on weather or not you want to go for class wins or just have fun and not swap your tires at events.

Hmmm... I like this idea, just because i already have a worn out set of crappy motomaster tires that came with the car on the original steelies... but i think i still plan to get some used wheels and tires.. something to last the entire season.. i know i will like the sport.. i've been waiting to get into motorsport since i was 7 years old... so no worries about me liking it or not
