The TFbM is looking for a new autox timing package.

Does anyone have recommendations of what is good, what is not good, and approximate costs?

What product does the Regional Series use? Is there a contact?

I think the regional equipment was built and supplied by a member of the WOSCA club?

there are also some professional systems out there...

I'd look into contacting VCMC in Vancouver and WSCC in Winnipeg in regards to the systems they have as they seemed like very nice timing systems from what I saw.

What product does the Regional Series use? Is there a contact? The regional system is made up of hardware and software writen, built and assembled by various people.

Victor Del Col wrote the software and has no problem with allowing other clubs to use it. Of course I am sure he would like to be informed that a specific club is using it so he can keep you up to date.

Doug Elcomb, a WOSCA member, built the display.

The heads were purchased from the company that Pat Yorke works for, Shellby (sp).

The stands were made by Andy Chumra (oldyeller when he is around).

The interface box was built with schematics supplied by Doug by someone I work with.

The computer, well it's a laptop, with an addition serial port card is available at almost any computer store. Windows 98 is sufficient...

The cables were all made by Jason and I with cable and audio (microphone) connectors purchased at an electrontics surplus store (as was most of the interface box internals).

With the right price on a laptop (donated to the cause) you can put together a system for less than $1000, not including the display.

We (ASCC (http://www.ascc.ca)) have been looking for display options. Any idea if the display would be proprietary or if it would work with the output from any software? We're trying to figure out if we can build/buy one within reason.

The "WOSCA display" was made to work with regional software, but it works fairly simply. The software just sends a text string to the display. It then shows that time for a fixed period, or until it gets another text string. If other software has functionality for sending infor to a display then it's possible that an adaptation could be made on one end. The display also has a capabillity to function as a stand alone timer by plugging beams directly into it (setup for the regional beams), but in this function it can only handle one car at a time.

Anyone with more questions about the displays used by CASC-OR Solo-2 and WOSCA can contact the designer/manufacturer, Doug Elcomb by emailing wosca-at-hotmail-blah, blah, blah... I don't won't to post Doug's personal email here, but I will forward any inquires made to the hotmail account directly to Doug.

Hello, I'm Farzaan, ex-president of VCMC Motorsport Club from the westcoast. My team introduced the automated timing system back in 2002 in Vancouver. We purchased and still use the RaceAmerica system with software from AutoX/TS. Both have worked flawlessly over the years, including multi-car on track events.

We've run Nationals in B.C. and Alberta using that system and it is astoundingly fast when in the right hands. We also introduced a barcode system so that all members and participants need only bring their barcode card to registration; when they pull up to the line, we just scan the barcode sticker on their helmet. Even the sticker selection went through a gruelling test phase where we subjected the sticker to ice, heat, water and extreme dry conditions and then beat the crap out of the sticker for weeks on end before selecting the sticker that would last. We don't use timing cards anymore and we never have line ups during registration even with 120+ participants.

There was a way in which we introduced it that I think worked very well. We started by automating the registration function using the AutoX/TS software. Once members were comfortable with that, we then introduced the RaceAmerica gear. Doing it in that phased approach really helped the learning curve and success rate. Almost any of the 300+ members can operate the whole system now.

I may even have the training brochures we used to introduce the system to members if you'd like to use them as well. We called the system "Fastrack". I raced at US Nationals and still feel that our little club in B.C. really got it right.

btw - if anyone can help me through the maze of clubs here to figure out where I can race, it would be greatly appreciated.

What specifically are you looking for?

Just trying to figure out which club I would best fit into... In B.C. you essentially have three clubs to choose from in the Lower Mainland: VCMC, BCMA or UBCSCC. VCMC is the all encompassing club, BCMA is mostly for domestic cars and UBCSCC is for young racers in university.

I'm looking for almost any racing at this point, it's been so long since I've been in competition. I prefer courses that are more open which suits the 993 better. I have no idea what the facilities are like here so any input and any 2-3 clubs I should focus on would be ideal.

Thanks,
Farzaan

If you have a HP car, I think that TLMC (Barrie) and COMP (Oakville) let you open it up more than others because of their larger lots and good design.

Thanks for the input, I am going to attend the May 7th TLMC event. Are there any other clubs that race at the Oakville site? COMP does not seem to have a website but I would like to race at that facility as it's much closer than Barrie. Thanks!

Wow... look at all of the Corvette clubs across Southern Ontario... are they afraid to put km's on their car or afraid of driving far enough to encounter a cloud? ;)

If you've ever tried to do an event with the Prowler club with rain in the forecast, you'll know what I mean.
