So my first autocross season fast approaches but i need to go buy a helmet. Do i need an SA rated helmet or just an M? also where can i go pick up a cheap open-face M/SA helmet? i'm in the GTA (Markham).

depends on the car

roll cage = SA

anything else = M

Make sure you see the SNELL rating sticker on the helmet. DOT is NOT allowed unless it also has a SNELL ratting.

Sticker -on- the helmet, or tag -in- the helmet? I was under the impression that the tag inside the helmet would be the deciding factor.

There is a sticker under the lining of the helmet......

Actually the HJC I've been wearing for 6 years is missing the sticker inside. One year I wasn't allowed to wear it at FSAE. But the next year it was because the inspector was aware that it was common for my helmet model. It does have the external label.

So check inside the lining before you buy the helmet.

also just a personal note, which mainly comes from the selling of hockey helmets and other sports related equipment

dont get a helmet thats loose on your head, and preferably something that at first, when its brand new, is a bit tight. General use will expand it over time and you'll get a perfect in the long run.

trying a helmet on in the store will give a different feeling than abusing it at the track.

Snow City Cycle on Kennedy Road had a decent selection of motorcycle helmets with a Snell 2000 rating on sale for $59.99

The sizes were limited to XS and XL, XXL

I'm an average sized person as is my friend, and we were both XL's.

Also, Cycle World has several HJC's with Snell 2000 for $139.99. they are a little more fancy.
