Good to hear there are spots left.
2 different autoslalom competitors I spoke with yesterday at the HADA autoslalom said they wanted to go to the solo1 school but the solo1 web site still had last years info so they didn't know how or when to register.
I told them to look or ask on this forum.

Thanks for sending them this way G. All the information they need, they'll find here, or they can contact me at soloontario@cogeco.ca

Once I receive news on the website update, I'll let everybody know ;)

Some people have been asking about the format of the school, so I thought I'd post some info on the TAC/OMSC SoloSprint May School.

We open for registration and car inspection at 7:30 on Saturday May 12. We'll have a welcome meeting at 8:30. We'll have 3 run groups, and the students will rotate between classroom, skidpad/exercises, and track.

In the classroom, we'll provide a Student Guide that covers car control basics, safety, and info on SoloSprint and CASC. We have different instructors coming in and talking about various topics. In addition to performance driving, we cover modifications, the SoloSprint classification system, and series information.

On the skidpad, we do the regular round-and-round stuff so that you can experience driving in a corner at the limit, and understand what happens if you brake or accellerate while at the limit. We will also set up a long slalom course so you can work on smooth transitions and timing. The second day, we set up an Autocross course to practice car control at slower-than-track speeds.

On the track, you'll be riding with instructors in your car. We run clockwise on Saturday, and counter-clockwise on Sunday. We cover braking points, the line through the technical DDT course. There's no passing on the track, but we only have a maximum of 12 cars on at once. If a train is developing, we will black-flag the slow car at the head of the train, and have them drive through the pits, and rejoin at the end of the train.

At the end of each day, your instructors will take you out to show you what they can do in their cars. Please don't encourage them to go too fast. They're wild enough as is.

We provide coffee in the morning, pizza & subs for lunch, and a barbecue on Saturday after the track closes.

Camping will be available, but please keep the paved parking surface clear so we can set up the exercises.

It is a great time, and you will be exhausted by the end of the weekend. I hope to see you there!

Not even point-bys!?!?!?

We'll play it by ear. The only place for a point-by is on the lower straight. Max 1 car per lap, and both cars have to be ready. Last year, we did that for the instructor sessions.

Driving through the pits isn't too bad, and it sorts out the cars real fast. There's no waiting to get back on.

Every rookie worries about the same thing, am I going to be the slow one out there getting in everyone’s way. :o It’s a school you there to learn,
Don’t worry about it, the instructors are first class and you will be amazed how much you improve over the two days. Sunday night you will feel like a pro. :D

The worst has happened just before the school weekend. I just picked up my car from obrien motorsports and on the way home when I get there I noticed some oil on my driveway. Looked in my garage and my oil cooler is leaking. I figure that the shop that flushed my oil cooler might have over tightened it or more then likely I over tightened it and cracked the oil cooler bung. They are like $800 new and sort of hard to find one used not to mention a huge pain for me to remove and install one. I have spent months trying to get this car ready!!!

At the worst what happens if I cannot make it to the school. I have already prepaid:(

woe is me...........

Well it was not rons work. He did the roll bar. I think on the way back the oil cooler just cracked more and then I noticed the leak.

When is the cut off date to cancel your school entry?

Thank for the info.

I know Ron didn't break it... just suggesting that he may have a creative interim solution. He is one helluva fabricator. I suggest giving him a call.

D'oh. Now I'm getting scared of installing my new oil cooler lines...maybe I'll have a shop do it instead. I've had one too many plumbing incidents with overtightening as it is. Hopefully someone on rx7club comes through...also, how much is a new oil cooler from mazdamotorsports? I've heard that it's a fraction of dealer price.

Sorry to hear that you're having problems with the car Ian. :(
Unfortunately the cut-off date to cancel the school has passed already (March 3rd).
Rob's suggestion is a good idea: If you can't get the car fixed on time, pick up a rental. I know it'd be ideal to take the school in your own car, but .... don't let the opportunity pass. You're still getting a lot of instruction and when attending the free event, your car will be ready and you can also have an instructor with you in the car.

Thanks,

I have the oil cooler out and getting it modded. Removing the oil thermostate (Were the crack is) and welding a plate over it. This will mean that the oil thermostate which used to be there will be gone and the oil will always start running throught the cooler. Some negatives.... You can't drive it now in the winter but I never do anyhow. Takes longer to warm up and possible but I am not sure oil pressure may drop a tad since the hole is now bigger?

Anyhow looks like I may just make it.

Make sure to use synthetic oil until you can fit a thermostat again. Stuff like 20w50 dyno oil can blow an oil cooler after cold startup. BTDT ...

Synthetic oil is generally not so good for us rotary folk. :)

I will no longer be able to use an oil thermostate. Had to completely weld on a plate to cover the bung since the threads were cracked.

Not sure what you mean by the 20W50 can blow the oil cooler. You mean the pressure will pop the oil cooler? Never thought of that. I think my car on cold startup has around 60psi of oil pressure normally.

thanks for the heads up.
