There is a bulletin on the CACS-OR site with rule changes and it includes changes to PAX for some classes.

It notes CMOD DMOD CSS CSP were changed but ESS/ESP PAX were also changed.

Nothing on the Solo 2 site or on this forum yet.

No word on if PAX will be revised for the Nationals.

Yep, and there are 23 other changes to the rule book as well..... It is up on the solo 2 web site, just that there has been no announcement as of yet due to it going up last night.

Someone pointed out that ONE car moves from AS to ESS, with a lower pax, so ESS was adjusted some...

This the Regional PAX, not the National PAX. They were different last year and will probably be different again this year.

Hopefully the national comitte wakes up and smells the PAX coffee instead of blindly following SCCA rules that we don't fully match anyway.

Since Nationals is being done in run groups, any changes in weather throughout the 2 days will completely wipe out any relevance that the overall event winner on PAX will have (see 2005 SCCA Nationals).

Nationals is about winning your class. Unless of course you have none.

OK, the question begs to be asked: Just HOW are the PAX values calculated?

CMOD is now a .900 vs. the DMOD pax of.908 when before CMOD had a higher number? (.909 CMOD vs. .885 DMOD in the initial 2006 rules)

Could I also ask what prompted the MOD values to be altered?

probably the biggest factor was the fact that D/mod allows larger engines therefore sicne we don't have a wieght restriction thats cars should go faster....

The base pax values were pulled from scca numbers at the last minute and altered accordingly to our prep and classes. C and D Mod were not changed from scca values and after a review of all numbers (using last years results amoung other sources) there was found to be a few tweaks needed. C and D Mod were way off and probably still are, at least a bit.

The Solo 2 Director can change any of these numbers at any time, if they are felt to be off.

PAX is a difficult thing given all the variables like lot size, lot surface, weather, gate width, course layout, tires, cars, drivers and it is difficult to come up with numbers that work in every senario.

Someone suggested last year having multiple pax numbers depending on variables, when it was put to them to review them and come up with something that would work, they passively accepted the numbers as posted.

They will NEVER be perfect and there will always be those that will complain, but until a better method of determining an overall champion is presented, pax will be used.

Long story short a retarded mistake was corrected. DMOD is the faster class.

PAX factors are estimated by looking at past results. If a class is consistently off the mark with good drivers and well prepared cars then the pax gets altered. SCCA has much more data in this respect so their numbers are usually used, but their classing is different which leads to some confusion and some screwy numbers.

Is that to say that the National PAX is likely not going to change?

What are the changes based upon?

Thanks for the explanation. I was just interested. You're right dmod should be the faster class (hopefully will be this year - a little more experience and a couple of mods to the car)

Looking at the past, a lot of the venues lent themselves to smaller / tighter courses which 'favoured' handling and light, nimble cars.

When I look at this years lots and the potential for some more 'open' courses I think I can see some rationale creeping in. ;)

You can have your class set to whatever you want Andrew, leave mine alone. :D :D If a true A-mod car were to show up I don't think you'd want to run essentially heads up with that would you? ;)
I don't get too hung up on pax anyways, just go as fast as you can-hopefully stay ahead of whoever is in your class and have fun.
