yes, this example needs some de-uglification, but can you guys tell me what's under the hood, and if this is a car to avoid?

i can see the "honda rash" on the rear quarters, and other than the stupid mid-wing, the muffler and the horrid tail lights, this thing looks OK.

its a 93' civic w/ an alleged "95 Si vtec motor". i'll let you honda-heads let me know what's what.

Does it come with CAA Plus for towing? :D

I never understood the need for a second tach but whatever... car looks kinda rough but it's pretty hard to go wrong with a 5th gen Civic.

Lots of potential, as long as he doesn't want too much. I think 3k would almost be too much for that car.

does it need the SI tranny to go along w/ the motor? or is the old one good enough?

what's the difference between the two?

hard to judge from the picture

but it IS a SOHC :)

however why bother buying a whole engine when its just the ECU and head that are different...

you can always tell when looking up front if there is a VTEC oilthing attached to the head, you'll see some wires comming out of it, it usualy looks out of place.

D15b7 and D16Z6 have different bottom ends.

The D16Z6 bottom end is far stronger than the D15B7 one and 100cc bigger to boot.

Si tranny has shorter gearing, if you were going to use it for solo I would suggest the JDM VTi tranny like I have because it has Si gearing and a factory LSD.

Si engines are plentiful and cheap so it's not hard to believe he had one swapped in in place of the old 1.5 ... and it's the VTEC solenoid that you would be looking for to tell the difference.

The motor does not NEED the Si transmission, but the gearing is shorter and better matched to the powerband of the Si motor.

so can you honda gods tell if that's indeed a vtec SI motor, or just some sohc lump'n'head w/ a header?

You cannot tell from the picture.

Simply ask the owner if it's a D16Z6 complete motor or if it's a Mini-me (the loving name given to head swapped b15b7's).

hey hey, i have a D16Y8 mini-me sitting in the garage!

D16z... why you using ancient tech as an example, ahah

and i think an SI transmission is a must

not sure on the early gen civics, but on my EK an SI engine with a CX/DX tranny would put you out of VTEC when you switch gears

ofcourse an easy fix for that is to just change your vtec engagement point

In the picture of the engine bay, that sure looks like the stock engine, sans VTEC.
