Well, what a weekend it’s been. I was competing in at the SoloSprint Time Attack last weekend at TMP (aka Cayuga) and had a few issues arise to slow me down. Wednesday of last week did an oil change and fresh alignment on my Splitfire/Buddy Club/Option JDM/Castrol sponsored CRX. Thursday night I took it out to heat cycling some tires – 15 minutes of figure 8s in an empty parking lot. Car was feeling good - no issues to speak of.

Friday I went down to Cayuga for some lapping to learn the track. That was the first track I’ve ever driven on, but a couple years have past since it’s been open so it’s like a whole new track to me. On my second lap, pushing about 70% a balljoint popped off of the LCA. It took out the axle and a good chunk of the fender with it. Big mess. Strange thing was the pin was still in the balljoint. It was an OE balljoint that was about 6 months old. My best guess is it was a defect of some kind. Stuff like that doesn’t happen. The axel was also OE and only about a month old. Talk about bad luck.

Got it on Shane’s tow dolly rented from U-Haul for the weekend and towed it to Splitfire in Brampton for repair. Thanks Shane! Came back at 11pm that night to pick it up and it sure enough it was done. The car felt good. I used some pliers to bend the fender out of the way of the wheel and some trusty duct tape to cover the roughed up edges. The car felt good. Back to the track I go for Saturday’s competition.

On my 5th lap during open lapping the radius rod broke on the opposite side. I run an aftermarket traction bar from ETD racing. This is the second time I’ve broken the radius rod in a braking zone. The other fender is now mashed up. I call ETD Racing on my way back to Splitfire and sure enough they’re still open and have extra radius arms in stock. They’ve taken over the manufacturing of the traction bars and have strengthened the original design from Todem (sp?). They were really helpful bunch, especially since I left my wallet in the racecar at Paul’s shop. Talk about a bonehead move. So I grab a couple spares just to have and back to Splitfire I go. 10 minutes after arriving at the shop, Johnny pops on the new radius rod and the car is back on the trailer ready to go back to the track.

Sunday comes and I’m a little hesitant in warm up after having two suspension bits break on me. The first session I’m sitting in 3rd about a half a second behind Luca in his Subaru. The second session comes and I push the car a little harder. I shave a second off my time in the second session but Luca steps it up too. I’m still a second behind. By the third session I was feeling comfortable that the car wasn’t going to break on my so I went out pushing it hard. Shaved a second and a half off my time and am sitting firmly in second place a second behind Dr. Dave and his LS1 powered Camaro on his cheater V710 tires. Fourth session comes out and I know I’m leaving some time on the track. Wish I had more seat time on the track. Alignment is off too from the front wheel mashing up the fenders. So decided to push even harder and try to take down the Camaro.

Get the green flag and off I go. Added a bit more air to the rear tires to make up for some of the alignment issues and pushed back all my braking zones by a foot or so. First lap I cooked turn 1 by going in way too hot. I hang on the brakes to the apex to scrub some speed and the back end starts coming around like I expected with the higher rear pressure. Back on the gas I go and the car stays on the track. Must’ve looked kind of hairy from the pits but whatever, gotta a V8 on uber tires to put in its place. Continue to push hard throughout the session but times didn’t improve. Think I pushed a little too hard. Oh well.

Have to thank Paul and Johnny from Splitfire for doing such a great job getting the car ready for the track, Shane for use of his Pathfinder and the guys at ETD Racing.

I had my share of small breaks (mysterious loosening of wheel nuts, muffler hanger failure and finally complete loss of power steering fluid) but I can't imagine breaking/returning 2x over the weekend - Ottawa's just too far... :p You deserve the weekend's "Track Dog" award for preseverence. Just imagine a pit bull statuette with a shift lever for a bone and your name on a plaque... ;) )

Myles, that's an overwgt underpowered LT1 not a high revvin' aluminum block LS1 you were gunnin' fer. I think my car was likely one of the worst through the esses all weekend whether I took the Sorensen line or not.

OTOH getting beat by uber tires that were already starting to go off (24 heat cycles by the end of the weekend) is a real PITA. You KNOW where I stand on that issue.

I too had my share of mechanical issues on Sat. Not 1 but 2 separate flat tires from blown valve stems. Not the inside valve but the actual rubber parts. Never had it happen before. The muffler shop in Cayuga was great to fix these in a jiff ( ended up doing all 4) but Saturday's escapades did give me a few concerns.

Being propositioned by 0.034 seconds though is hard to take. At least my backup score was better.

Yes, I trust you'll be on the uber Toyos next season, yes? Dominating all of us with non-uber Hooisers?

Too bad about my back-ups for Sunday (damn persistent Presswoods :D )... Saturday was much better. Too bad I didn't click the prerequisite "win" box first. Damn you Andy! :p J/K

I guess your name has to be Chris ( take your pick of last names i.e starting with A, P or S) to proposition 2 classes up and still claim it has nothing to do with the tires. At least when I propostioned SGT3 I gave ALL the credit to the tires :D

Miles, TMP would be a less likely place for you to beat me compared to Nelson or (gulp) the DDT where I stink. OTOH I had fresh Ubers at Nelson. Too bad for you.

Sure is sad to see how badly those poor Mustangs are doing under the new rules this year. What sort of cheese would you like with that wine?? :)

I stand corrected.

LT1, LS1...pfft. Vegetable soup if you ask me. :p Still 8x :D pistons vs. my 4x :D pistons. :) What do you say you pull 4 plugs, lose the uber tires and put that land yaucht on a 700lb diet and we see who's really the faster driver. Unless you're afraid... - muah-ha-ha-ha-ha!!

Ok ... are we getting into the uber tire debate already, or shall we wait until after the Mosport event? Honestly, after Saturday I was convinced. After Sunday, I'm back on the fence, though I'm much less balanced now :) My results are a bit funny from the weekend in terms of lap times. In case anyone is reviewing lap times, I had new R5SO3s on for all of Saturday and Sunday morning. On Sunday afternoon, I switched to Toyos, which were well worn, and probably at their optimum grip. The Hoosiers are 245/40, while the Toyos are 255/40, but in reality the Hoosiers are a tad wider (maybe 3-5 mm). Here are my brief observations from the weekend:

- To me, the Hoosiers have more ultimate grip. The mild understeer on corner entry I had with the Toyos was gone with the Hoosiers. This might be due to a mroe optimized suspension setup for Hoosiers as well (fluke of course).
- The Hoosiers feel way better in terms of turn-in and slip. They weren't sliding as much as the Toyos, and just did what I asked them to with the steering wheel.
- The Toyos are very easy to drive (for me) at the limit. The car is ridiculously predictable, and very easy to fix any mistakes.
- I tend to overdrive the Toyos (ie, they squeel at every turn). Not sure if this means I'm going slower than I could be, or that I'm getting every last bit out of them.
- I don't think I got to the limit of the Hoosier grip ... they could probably be faster if I had more time on them. At no point did I find myself out of shape with the Hoosiers on, so I know I didn't find the limit :)

My Conclusion: The hoosiers are faster, and feel better. Are they worth 5pips? Maybe not. We'll have some interresting discussions in the fall :D

i gained 0.7 seconds by driving with my windows down

after my window regulator broke and my window fellinto the door..

one would think the aerodynamic screwup should slow me down.....

i would agree that the uber tires should not be worth 5 pips, because its really hard to prove that they are worth 1 second, and considering all the other factors, their benefits are so hard to quantify.... anyway its all a big mess, and we should have much more documented experiences from everyone on and off uber tires to really make any sort of meaningfull conclusion

so far i like my toyo's.....

I think TMP was sig faster on Sunday than Sat in particular later in the day. I started the day sig slower than Sat and ended up sig faster.

Chris A. went 1.4 seconds faster on Sunday after removing some wgt from the trunk. If the weight he removed was the only thing responsible for this drop in times, we have to seriously rethink the bPIP schedule.

On fresh V710s I was a full second faster at Nelson (than on Victoracers) which on a short track like that is sig more than a full class. At the Nationals last sept both Russ and James were a full class faster than previously and set new records. If I am not mistaken (and I am sure I will be corrected by someone if I am) all the propositioning that has been done in the faster classes this year and most from last year was done by cars on "Uber" tires.

Yes they are worth 5 PIPs

If they are not worth 5 PIPs for you then maybe they aren't worth if for you but they are worth 5 PIPs for a number of people. The answer then is easy, run "uber" Toyos but you better hope that no one else in your class has a big budget with fresh Ubers.

Seriously though, due to my somewhat outspoken desire to PIP ubers, a number of competitors came up to me complaining that they might not want to run next year as they knew they weren't competitive without Ubers but didn't feel they could afford to keep up with fresh ones. Certainly my experience of running them too long ( too many heat cycles) can lead to embarassing propositioning (the shame of it all!! :( )
