What I learned At Autocross Today – 2006 HADA #4 – Brampton

1. A two-for-one coupon for ‘Full Throttle’ is worth only the paper it is printed on. Rather than my usual ‘Red Bull’ fix, I chugged two ‘Full Throttle’ today. It does keep you awake, but only because of the nausea.

2. I finish fourth of fifty-five cars…and end up second in class? Grrrr. Trung D’oh! Next time, Brian, I’ll pay you hard cash to put Trung in another class. Trung, I must say that was a particularly well-driven day!

3. I spent yesterday up at the Fergus Scottish Festival. How well do you expect me to drive when I am stuffed full of Haggis? And my fellow timing tent workers should thank me for knowing when to take a walk.

4. From the “Oh, I so hope Mike Birch is not preparing for Halloween” file – “Hey! Look what fell out of my pants!’

5. Speaking of pants, it turns out I drive much faster when I’m not wearing any.

6. It was kind of funny that, with all the left-over cars on the lot, HADA had to rethink their course, ended up with a bunch of extra cones and inadvertently developed a new autocross element: The Newbie Confusion Box.

7. Leaving your black tire iron sitting in the sun all day gives new meaning to the phrase “I’ve got a few irons in the fire”. Ouch.

8. Jeff had the best idea for dealing with car #300. We should all show up at the next drift event and drive perfect autocross lines. Everyone remember your stopwatches!

9.If you are going to have sex with a monkey, be sure to wear a condom! (Bonus points if you can guess who came up with that one!)

10. From Hanif’s ‘Big Book of Better Housekeeping’: “Lunch tastes better when a woman serves it.”

102.1 The Edge - I heard it when working on engine transplant part too many on Friday night!

Hot dog! We have a wiener! (Of course, I didn't hear it until the replay this morning at some ungodly hour that even orthodox Ukranians don't get up for on a Sunday (trust me, I'm married to one (and I'm going for the most gratuitous use of embedded brackets record (that I know of))))

You get to write the WILAAT until I'm back in September!

P.S. Where were y'all today??

Next weekend? Wide open. Figures! *snort*

Christine: I'd rather serve pizza than marshal, personally. But maybe I'm just lazy ;)

How much are we talking here? :D Believe me, I know what you mean because I'm in the same class as you, haha. But it was a good lesson learned because now I know there's a lot more that I have to do to be that fast. Even scarier was Wes took my car on a fun run and did a 51.2. I should get more people to drive my car more often ...

Great driving, Trung. Any time you want to co-drive let me know ... just not at HADA. :D

1. Straw's may be the most underrated device known to man.

2. While the mean age at HADA events is probably in the 30s, the topics of discussion seem to favour the 50+ crowd (golf, knee problems, rehab....)

3. Cheap bubble tea at Dixie Park closes at 6. Go there first, then have dinner.

4. Riding in and/or driving Gary's Miata, Eric's Miata, Dave's Miata, Bryan's Civic, Trennell's Integra, Steve's Z, Taylor's Civic and Brent's RX-8 makes the day go by much faster

5. Waiting for Birch every run slows the day right back down ;)

6. Just because this is a sport, it doesn't mean your white knee-high socks with blue and yellow stripes ("sport socks") are ok to wear. You don't see the HADA member's driving "sports cars" do you? :D

Typical uninformed youth,I went to tlmc event solely to practice drifting/check car set-up a couple years ago(man does time fly eh?)with the copper car, everyone loved it and most rwd guys noticably tried to duplicate my runs.
I did get an e-mail from Frank asking for insurance purposes not to drift intentionally at any further events, the difference is I understand where their coming from and didn't go back with a drift set-up again-happily I might add.
I think I'm going to drag the 'ol ice racer out again and have some fun with it at the tlmc regional this weekend. :D

Brian.. gotta say, I'm rethinking a sway bar. I hear you ran the struts kinda soft... Though I guess I really need to put 710's back on the car to see how it holds up.. if there's still a big gap... sway bar. I'm not running as high a spring rate either but.. I don't think that accounts for 2 seconds. :p

I mean Wes and I have pretty close to the same car (performance and weight, actually both or yours would be a little lighter (30lbs?).. we were both on old hoosiers (mine a year newer, his AutoX) and we did about the same time. So that should mean I should have been able to do a 51 in your car too... which, as Wes said.. makes me think.. "WTF is wrong with my car?" :p

Hanif, you should really put that car 300's times back into the results so they can all see how slow it was. I can't get over them saying they should come back and beat us all to show how it's done. They must be right, I'm sure you're jealous that your car doesn't handle as well as theirs and you should make sure they give you that explanation on vehicle dynamics they're yapping about.

I want to post on there for any one of them to come to any event I'm at so they can get their asses handed to them by a 102 hp 4 door grocery getter!!!

"Better Rotation" ... HA!

I don't want to start a war of any kind, nor in any way stereotype ALL drivers of a particular mark. One particular driver chose to ignore my warnings and continue to behave in an unsafe manner. I had no choice but to ask that driver to leave the event. I'd like to see people from all clubs attending our events, but they must abide by our rules and regulations - one of which is no deliberate tire burn-outs :)

So please, don't paint all drivers from that club with the same brush. I'm sure there are good drivers from that club who would give us all a run for our money. Don't scare them away before they have a chance to prove themselves.

Thanks.

It's not the car as much as it is the driver.

I mean precise car setup can count for 2-3 seconds in AutoX or on the track, Another 2 seconds or so probably separates skill, but when the gap between is well over that.. it's just an issue of experience. Seat time.

Taylor
08-23-2006, 11:01 AM
OMG that thread is infuriating.

Silvia.. maybe you can pass this on if you have access to a few of those people...

While the overall issue is a concern over car control, a new driver, a warning, disregarding the warning and doing it again... the #1 reason that guy got ejected was not solely for the spin... it was the ****ING SMOKESHOW BURNOUT he wanted to do when he lost it. What he did was give total disregard for the rules, the organizer who warned him, and the safety of the marshalls on the course.

Did the rears come out on the STI and the Miata. Yes. Is that a problem? No. Why? Well anyone in the sport would know why. Rotation is good setup for tight sections of the course. The ability to properly rotate the car and be fast is CLEARLY different than what this guy was doing. This is why he was given a WARNING to put shit in check.. he didn't, he continued on as he had and then proceeded to give the big '**** you' with the burnout.

I should also point out, this is a guy I had to talk to about missing his marshalling duty. Again, in total contradiction to the drivers meeting rules. He was given leeway(sp?) and allowed to make up for it after, but I should have pulled him out of his car and forced him to marshall right then an there, as I had to another guy after (who I might add, gave me no hassle what so ever).

So the guy obviously had a poor atttitude. Further evidenced by him flooring it in the paddock where everyone elses car was parked and number of people walking around them.

This has NOTHING to do with the fact he drives a Nissan 240sx. Don't.. ****ing.. care.. what he was driving.

That isn't to say that someone doing what he did WITHOUT the smoke show would have been allowed to continue.. there are venue issues, they are difficult to get, yadda yadda. But the ultimate problem is he was not giving the event or the people in it or running it, respect.

He was warned, he ignored it. Forget what he THOUGHT was going on, or if he THOUGHT he was being picked on. Reality is, he wasn't, and I don't care what he thought, all he has to know are the rules, and abide by them. He didn't. End of story.

Taylor
08-23-2006, 11:03 AM
I should also add. I heard the organizer speak to him on the ejection and it went down like...

"I'm sorry, I tried to warn you. You have to go"

I can honestly say, I would not have been that cordial.

Silvia_Drift

The fact is that the 240sx is the best car ever made and cannot be matched in any motorsport ever! Haha, I'm joking but this is the mentality of a lot of 240sx owners since most of us are immature kids from ages 16-25 who love our almost sportscars.

There is no point arguing mainly for this fact. Who cares if he got kicked off the course since nothing can really change that. You guys told him not to drift and he did the opposite (which is what most kids would do).

I think he is a little upset because the marshall came and warned me not to drift shortly after when the 300 car driver was talking to me. In all honesty, I wasn't trying to drift. I have a freaking open diff for gods sake lol! I was just trying to get around the course as fast as possible. This is probably why he thought the 240 drivers were being singled out but I guess this is okay since the 240sx is known for drifting.

My Miata is front engine, rear drive with an open differential, too. No drifting, no spins, no smoke shows, no boost - just 4th fastest overall. ;)
