View Full Version : re: liability of amatuer motorsports
hi guys,
our 240sx "club" is trying to become a real club that organizes lapping days and things like that...and one real issue that has come up is... liability of the executive members...prez.ect...
does anyone know of any bad instances where clubs ..or who ever have been sued for injuries..or worse?
just trying to get a feel for how litigatious motorsports is....
thanks

You'll need to get incorporated and get insurance to protect the directors.
You'll also get your asses handed to you buy the all-mighty Honda god! :D

Adam,
If you're asking this question then in my mind what you're really asking is justification on whether you need to worry about liability coverage or whether you can just ignore it.
For a about $1500 you can get yourself incorporated and insured. Thereafter, about $500 a year will keep you safe from litigious folks. Is piece of mind not worth $500 a year? Put it into perspective my son.
Say one of your members goes out and does some stupid thing and smacks into another car or something while driving on the street. The guy in the other car gets whiplash and decides to sue your member and since he found out that the guy that hit him belonged to a car club, he decides to sue the club directors as well. Say I'm one of the directors in your car club who is getting sued by this guy. I'm pissed that I got sued, so now I decide to sue you (the president) for not getting club liability insurance.
Just one of a million possible scenarios.
Club insurance protects the directors as well as all the members from personal liability - not just at events mind you, but at all club meetings, etc. Don't even spend a half second wondering whether you should get insured or not. The answer is simple.
i agree 100%....
what a world we live in :(
