View Full Version : Drivers per car?

Is there a maximum number of people that are allowed to drive a single car in a solo1 event? I imagine that there would be gridding issues if there are too many, but is there a clearly stated maximum?
I ask because I have mildly considered sharing a car with some friends for next season.

This is in no way an official response... However, I would hazard a guess that no more than 3 drivers would be reasonable. This would be based on one driver per run group and three run groups per day. If there are only two run groups... that's a different matter.

Again, not an official response but in addition to Chris's comment, don't forget to consider the increased potential for break-down's.
My brother and I have been good about not blaming the other when one of us breaks the car. However, if you are sharing with friends, you would certainly want to clearly define the 'rules' of expenses and realize that you could lose an entry fee (or worse) because of someone else's problem....
That being said.... it fosters great competition and comparisions when you are driving the exact same car!

Ditto to all of Todd's comments. Chris and I did it for two years. I would suggest that you limit it to 2 people though. The wear and tear from 2 drivers is bad enough. More than 2?? I can't even imagine what the stress (fatigue) on the vehicle would be like.

Okay, that's basically what I figured.
I can definately understand the need for ground rules on the usage, breakage, expenses and labour on the car. Aside from the serious parts, i think it would make a great fun summer of driving. Thanks for your responses. And serge... not quite what I had in mind.

I thought there was something in the rules stating that a max of 2 people could share a car.
All I could find was a reference saying that cars with 2 drivers needed to be separated on the grid by 5 vehicles. This implies that there is a limit of 2 drivers.
I'm wondering if that rule was mistakenly dropped at some point.

Can 1 driver compete with 2 cars?

Actually, yes.
If your car breaks (or maybe just isn't competitive), you can borrow another competitor's car - or run your spare car - however you must run in the class you registered in, so the car must be legal in that class.

I was thinking about a driver with cars in different classes looking to double his/her seat time?

how about this, something me and Eric wanted to do last season but sorta never went through
can two competitors drive each others cars in the same class thereby techincaly making for "4" competitors in that class?
so i drive my VW and he drives his cavalier, then we swap for another round,
i realize we would have to double our entry fees and create a proxy competition...
but is it possible??
BTW ERIC< my new german sled will so kick you new german sleds ass!

Nope.... you driving your car and then his, wouldn't make you "2 drivers"... besides, remember that drivers keep their numbers, so you'll neeed to have 2 numbers assigned to you: not possible.....
you're still only one Serge no matter what car (or how many) you are driving.... (And I think we have enough with just one Serge ;) :p)

The problem with this is marshalling ... in SoloSprint part of the price of admission is haveing marshal duty ... you skip on that, and you don't get to run :) Of course if we were to hier marshals at our events, I'd certainly be up for paying an extra few $$ to not have to bake in the sun for 4 hrs

Lapping program, what lapping program??? Get your Nissan over here and you can fill me in on the details. Am I missing the track, are you kidding...if I can get some time off I may have to take the roadster to Florida in January to check out Sebring (two days lapping and two day school) - wanna come?
so i drive my VW and he drives his cavalier, then we swap for another round,
Serge, that would be fun and I would love to see your expression after driving my boat!:D
I still wonder about bringing two cars in separate classes? For example, if I wanted to bring my cavalier and roadster and compete in T3 and GT2 respectively? If I provided a volunteer for marshalling would that make it OK?

Another great point! I am a family man as you know and would love to bring my wife and kids out more often. The problem is marshalling means I'm never around to spend time with them. I realize volunteering/marshalling keeps cost down but I would definitely be happy to pay!:)

Under the proposed 2007 R&R, Section 1.6.3, the answer to your question is a maximum of 2 drivers per car.

Hey Chuck, what about this?
If you want to enter a different car in different classes that is OK, but each car is restricted to a maximum of 2 different drivers. You would also have to pay an entry fee for each vehicle. A volunteer for marshalling duties would also be required.

I stand corrected. Section 1.6.3 of the 2007 R&R says:
"A competitor may only enter an event once. However any vehicle may be entered by a maximum of two drivers."
I apologize for my mistake.
