Asian LeMans Series in Zhuhai
I am here in Zhuhai, China working an Asian LeMans Series Race this Sunday. We were here back in 1997 with Cor Euser and the factory Marcos Team shortly after this Formula 1 grade track was first built.

Last visit, I still have the memory of Race Control calling for the track to be swept. That resulted in a shut down and the deployment of 10 ladies on bicycles being sent out to the corners with brooms to take care of it. True story.

There has been major development in the city since then - huge buildings and signs of serious activity.

Arrived here from Hong Kong yesterday and are heading over to the track in a couple of hours to get things underway including a seat fitting.

This once beautiful track looks like an amusement park that has been abandoned for a few years. Paint peeling, stuff broken, badly faded - everything! We were last here just after it had been built for Formula 1 racing and it was state of the art. There isn't enough lipstick for this old girl. :o

Still an interesting race track with a relatively good surface still tho'. Awesome long front straight!

The Asian LeMans Series hospitality is good with custom made pasta, pizza and a whole lotta other good stuff in the suite overlooking pit lane.

Seat pour yesterday and met the team, the 2 other drivers and the race officials. First on-track session today. :)

A few familiar drivers here including Guy Cosmo and Patrick Byrne driving for Jackie Chan Racing. Our car sponsored by 'OneCoin' is an LMP2 Ligier that is in black with gold trim livery - stunning and the best looking car on the grid.

It has been an intense few days dealing with administrative issues but what is impressive is the obvious prosperity of the country and how much it has grown in the 20 years since we were last here. The 30 minute taxi ride from the hotel to the track is 65CD or about USD$8!!

There are no problems getting around - lots of English is spoken and pretty much every sign is bilingual in Chinese and English. Have to remember that we are 12 hours ahead of Ottawa here when I call home! :p

Practice/Qualifying today, 4 hour race tomorrow.

Here is what the Zhuhai International Circuit looked like when we were there in 1997 with the Marcos FIA GT Car.

The blond man in the top 2 pics is Theun Medima from Holland. This race was in November 1997 and I was told by my Team Owner that we were running a new Porsche GT2 car at Daytona in February 1998. We took delivery of the new car the weekend before the Daytona 24 Hour Race at Moroso. In the meantime, I pulled together a team, truck and trailer, race shop - and everything else a team would need - in about 5 weeks from scratch. Theun was one who I recruited knowing only that he had done good work with the Marcos Team. Ran the car for the first time at Daytona on the Wednesday; driver John Morton blew a tire coming off NASCAR 4 during the Thursday test and chewed up the right rear bodywork; started the 24 Hours of Daytona and finished 5th overall. Plus I had a full-time job - and was the Series Chief Steward for CART's Indy Lights program that year! :o
