Rally racing - where do you start?

I am interested in doing some racing. BUT I have no idea where I should start.
Here are my I guess list of wants haha

I would prefer rally or rally cross.

I know Hondas and Subarus, so I would prefer to race a Subaru or a Honda. Prefer a Honda really.

Buying a pre built car is always cheaper I assume, I guess not such a big deal for a rally cross car.

I would prefer to rally, where can I get more info?
For those that do rally, what kinda budget do you need for the year? keeping in mine, entry level class.
I have a truck and trailer already.

What else do I need to know? Fill in some blanks for me :D

MLRC.ca or kwrc.on.ca

RallyCross is the right place to start to get a feel of things. both MLRC and KWRC have rallycrosses and winter rallyx's throughout the year.

I rallyx'd with KWRC for a few years. Usual costs - $100 for the entry fee, $1000 or so for rally tires, cost of car, gas, $20 for a wash after the event etc.

A ton of fun for the money. As for the car, pretty much any car will work. Subarus, Evos, Ford focuses, talons, Audi's etc are what most people are running.

Thanks!!!

It's about a 3 hour drive for me for the rally cross. How many runs do you get?

mlrc is about 3 hours away from the city. kwrc is closer, about an hour or so. usually 5-6 runs and fun runs after.

awesome thanks for the info
Looking for a cheap car to try this out. Most cheap cars are FWD, I am going to regret that decision?

Re: Rally racing - where do you start?

Lots of quick FWD cars in the series. Ford focuses are pretty quick from what I've seen.

Cars run in classes. 2 wheel drive, awd na, awd fi etc. Whether you will regret a fwd is debatable, depends on what you are looking to get out of it. I started in awd fi and thats the only class I'd run. The only other car I'd consider is a rwd. I personally will not run a fwd although they are quick.

As usual, tires are most important, then car and/or driver.

soft tops may not be allowed. You will have to check the rules.

I am sure a jacked up civic with an ITR trans would be a lot of fun. Track down some used 14" gravel rally tires if you can.

I saw that but sadly both are out of budget.
Going to check out an RSX tomorrow night, and I think that will be the base to bash with :D

1 Attachment(s)
Race car acquired.
3 of us are going to split this.

What spares do you guys bring to a rally cross? I am thinking spare tires is about it.

Re: Rally racing - where do you start?

Get true gravel rally tires. It's worlds better grip and you reduce the chance of getting a flat by orders of magnitude.

Go undersize if you can for better gearing if you have the ground clearance.

Make sure you don't have any holes in the floor or firewall.
