Re: ABC Wide world of Sports

I remember years ago seeing an interview with Jim MacKay and they asked about the "Agony of Defeat".

Apparently the skier featured and crashing was just fine after the fall, but the guy who came down after him was killed and they cancelled the rest of that event. The weather was playing havoc with the jumpers, blowing them all over the place.

Re: ABC Wide world of Sports

I'm probably going to catch heck for this, but these were the days when the Indianapolis 500 TRULY was worth watching

I think I saw every major race I wasn't personally at on Wide World of Sports. In my home it was car racing, figure skating, and hockey. The names were Torvell and Dean, Cranston, Team Canada vs. the USSR, Unser, Petty, Ongias, Allison, Stewart, Hunt, Watson, Foyt, Andretti, Mansell...

Re: ABC Wide world of Sports

No Colene-you are right!!!

Back then the Indy 500 was a amazing race, Cummins entered a diesel powered race car and almost won except for a minor part failure, the 2 STP gas turbine cars, Lotus showing up with a mid engine car and putting the front engined North American cars to shame.

Drivers with nick-names like Danny On The Gas.

I'll always remember the Challenger Pace-Car that pulled into pit lane and kept the pedal to the metal and hit a grandstand at 100 mph-what the hell was he thinking????

Re: ABC Wide world of Sports

Back in the 50's &60's, my dream was to see the Indianapolis 500, the Monaco GP & the 24hrs of LeMans thanks to the coverage by ABC. NASCAR wasn't on the radar; USAC was the top organization in US racing; F1 cars actually passed each other in a race; F1 drivers drove every form of racing car there was all over Europe & North America. If you followed ABC you knew about Andy Granetelli, the Novis, Leader-Card, Pennzoil & the fact 250,000 people were at the Brickyard every year for the 500. May was the month to be glued to your TV set to watch the drama of qualifying to see if guys like Lloyd Ruby & Eddie Sacks would be on the pole in their big front engined roadsters. Then the British invaders showed up with their tiny cars with the engine in the wrong end! Only if you were an F1 fan, did you know that these weren't the jokes that many Americans thought they were! Ahh, yes -those were the days!

Thanks for bringing back those wonderful memories of a great period in the Wonderful World of Motor Racing!

Vic
