Re: Toyo Tires Announcement and Sizing Poll

Major Rice, odd that you use Tire sizes 15" through 19"? Toyo doesn't offer every configuration, but some sizes that aren't catered to by the Autoslalom targeted 200tw market are available at reasonable cost compared to some other brands.

Feel free to discuss with me in PM why you think that negligible difference in end cost to the racer to buy in Canada vs. A volume discount from elsewhere plus a contingency prize program is not a value?

We aren't a spec Tire series. Feel free to purchase other brands if they benefit your setup. Seems you do your research, so I'm sure you'll find them.

Cheers!

I think the 66% markup is probably for two reasons:

1/ to discourage people who don't run sanctioned events from buying motorsport tires for street use only and not understanding that these tires will be slower on the street, not to mention dangerous. In Canada we seem to be much more cautious about this, perhaps as a result of our cold weather and several crashes in the nineties.

2/ In order to get the 40% discount you need to 'register' with the tire supplier, plus purchase the tires from a specially selected group of dealers. Such dealers really understand motorsport tires and have the latest installation equipment. In most cases these dealers also sell other items of interest to motorsport competitors.

Now unless the tires for the USA are subject to 'no duty' NAFTA terms, you'll need to add 6% to the US$ prices for import duty for tires made in Japan. The price gap is not what it was 5 or 10 years ago. At the end of the day the cross border prices will be very comparable, however you'll still need to mount and balance them. All this assuming you'll be investing the same amount of personal time from researching tires to having them on the car.

What I find frustrating in all of this is that several sizes offered in the US are not offered in Canada. And it seems to be the case with most every tire brand.

I don't believe my post suggests I will be using those sizes, but the thought of it certainly sparks some interest.

Yes the idea of entering into events with OTA is solely due to the fact that it is not a Spec tire series, however by allowing selected 100TW Toyo tires to be 0 PiPs is just a minor step away from it.

Alas, there aren't many other options to choose from now is there?

Re: Toyo Tires Announcement and Sizing Poll

Closest size to that is 225/50. There's also a 235/50 in a 15 inch size. I think i will go with a 225, as that is one size up from the 205's I have been running. I expect you can get them in Canada from a dealer that sponsors us like Braidan, but if all else fails there is always Tire Rack. I am probably going to order soon.

Re: Toyo Tires Announcement and Sizing Poll

Only size I can/will run is the 225-45's or 245-40's from another brand.

Toyo is making a blunder by not serving the most common 15" size.

Re: Toyo Tires Announcement and Sizing Poll

What's the issue? Diameter, or section width? Must be diameter, if a 45 is all you can run. I always read the specs on Tire Rack, as different tire companies have different dimensions for what is nominally the same size tire, but I assume you've already done that and discovered a 225/45 is all that will fit?

Max Attack, both the RR and RA1 are available in 225/45:15.. The RA1 is considered street, the RR would be premium R.

If you need a 245/40/15 offering, talk to Braidan or Steelcase.

Re: Toyo Tires Announcement and Sizing Poll

Miatas have to stay under a 23" dia or the strut tower gets too cozy and a 225 is more wider than a 205

I know toyo makes 225-45's in both the R888 and RR,its implied they aren't available to us.

So are they?.

Re: Toyo Tires Announcement and Sizing Poll

I know of no restriction on any size. Only issue might be that the size you want gets sold out if you wait too long. See list of preferred Tire dealers on previous page. Make a call. Reserve your set. I'll pick them up for you and keep them warm. If you like, I can bring them to Minden and you can pick'em up, or we can figure something else out.

Re: Toyo Tires Announcement and Sizing Poll

Is Toyo going to actually ship these now????

Last year when I ordered them, they wouldn't ship from west coast until it was warm enough (so tires don't freeze in transit)...sometime late April or early May as I remember.

Exclamation Re: Toyo Tires Announcement and Sizing Poll

The sizes you can get in CANADA are listed on Toyo CANADA's website. Yes, these sizes do in fact differ from what is available in the US (on Tirerack).

Regarding shipping, you are correct in that they will wait until warm weather to ship.

Re: Toyo Tires Announcement and Sizing Poll

Just checked the Canadian site and no 225-45-15's,guess they think we have no smaller cars used on track here?.

Poor decision whatever the reason.

I'm not really all that keen to use toyos again anyways, eapecially with the "discount" that just gets them back to normal retail pricing.

Re: Toyo Tires Announcement and Sizing Poll

Cold weather cracking during storage or shipping is a real concern for extreme performance tire. It's not like these tires are transport in heated containers, although tire company warehouses are well heated. Check out this link to a GM bulletin sent to their dealers, which is posted on the US National Highway Transportation Safety website.

https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...82862-5448.pdf

Be sure to scroll down to the photos of the cracking tire tread.

Waiting to have your tires shipped in warm weather may not be a bad idea.

Instead of guessing what Toyo thinks, why don't you ask them. At the same time you can share your expertise on how they could improve their pricing structure in Canada.
