Re: Hauling tires on roof rack

I did a check at the local Opp shop when servicing their doors, showed them the pics and this was what I was told: It is up to the cop in the car if he wants to get picky, usually they leave that stuff alone because they understand its a temperary attachment ment to go from one place to the next and back, but he did say he would reccommend moving the plate out just to be sure, because it is total blockage of sight, bikes tend to let the cop know a plate is there. He did say this system is not much away from the rear scooter carriers that the mobily challenged use. also a light is required by law but they tend to let that go, its small in the grand sceme of things.

Re: Hauling tires on roof rack

Going back to the roof rack idea, my concern about putting them on the roof is that it would be a lot of weight and pressure on the roof rack. If I recall from my Pontiac Montana, the factory indicated that there should be a maximum weight of about 50 lbs distributed evenly on the roof racks. I can't check that because I don't have it anymore. I'd be looking into weight limits for your roof racks and ensuring that it would be safe. Putting plywood and tires on your roof would create a lot of 'lift' pressure on your roof rack.

I have looked into the weight, mine is suggested at 150 lbs, so I should be okay. My rims are 15lbs and tires are [edit] 19.5 lbs each so I in at 140 lbs.

As for lift I am not going to use plywood, I have found an aluminum luggage rack that bolts directly to my roof rack. I will need to cut down the sides so the tires can lay flat. The luggage rack is a mesh, so air will not get trapped.

I am considering a wind deflector for the front, but don't know if I really need that.

Thought this was interesting too with all the tail hitch talk.

Are you sure that your tires are 9.5lbs?? Not 9.5kgs? That's like... bicycle tire weight. Have a look at the 710's here:

http://www.kumhousa.com/Products/Ptn...=1&PtnID=EV710

Even a 195/55/14 710 is 17.6 lbs...?

The lightest RA-1 made is the 185/60/R13 80V at 18lbs.

If it's 9.5kgs that's 20.9lbs and a total of 143.6lbs. Still safe but...

That was 19.5 lbs not 9.5 (according to a bathroom scale)

Anyone else doing this? Pics? Suggestions on engineering and securing the tires?

Thx,

i think Fritz uses a bike rack.. or something similar
