Yoko A052

Is the Yokohama A052 classed as a street tire for this year?

Some good reviews I see on them, people claiming they are as fast or faster than re71..

Re: Yoko A052

According to the SCCA rules, no.

Minimum molded tread depth of 7/32” as specified by the manufacturer.
The Yoko is only 6/32"

Tire models must have tires available in at least 4 rim diameters
The Yoko is only available in 3 rim diameters.

Maybe not. From a Tire Rack source:

"Yokohama is confirmed changing the initial tread depth to 7/32", and there will be 14"-18" and 20" rim diameters to meet the "4 rim diameters and 6 sizes" requirement. With the additional tread depth on the "new" tire, Tire Rack will be placing it in the Extreme Performance Summer category."

Whether or not it is SCCA ST eligible remains to be seen.

Re: Yoko A052

Just as a point of interest, Time-Attack has classified this tire as an R comp i.e not a street tire despite the 200 UTQG rating.

As CASC Autoslalom has adopted the SCCA rule set, we’ll wait to see what they do. Especially since they have the resources to properly test and class the new version of the tire when it is released.

Re: Yoko A052

We'll see what happens, but be aware there's a chance it may get stuffed on the exclusion list by SCCA.

This is the sorta situation that list is for. May or may not happen, but if you go buy a set in an attempt to get an edge and then find they're illegal, that'll likely be a "Your Problem, not Our Problem."

"Welcome to Who's Time Attack Is It Anyway! Where R-comps are street tires, street tires are R comps and the rules don't matter!"

PS: Just poking fun Dave. Mostly

Agreed. I don't think the A052 is going to upset the apple cart the way the RE71R did. There are pretty limited sizes, it sounds like it wears pretty quickly and there isn't conclusive proof that it's faster yet.

It would be fine if tire companies played by the rules but in actual fact there aren't any rules. When SCCA changed their definition of "street" tire from 140 UTQG to 200, all of a sudden the same Hankook RS3 that was 140 suddenly became a 200 tire. Now we have companies with tires that are rated at 200 UTQG that most would think would have been under 100 previously.

Prior to the tire PIP rules in OTA, anyone showing up on Hoosiers won (I know I did and although I would like to think it was my brilliant driving, it probably wasn't). At least we are in a better space now.
