VIR IMSA/ALMS Weekend

Next weekend is the first time for the ALMS Series at Virginia International Raceway. When we tested there earlier this year, the Muscle Milk P1 car ran a 1:30 lap - which was 5 seconds faster that the Grand Am DP cars had ever run. We will probably be a couple of seconds under that in qualifying. 32 ALMS cars are entered along with 19 GT3 Cup and 18 Prototype Lites entries.

VIR is one of the oldest tracks in the US and has had tons of money put into upgrading the facility. The track is still kind of narrow and definitely challenging. Squeezing 32 cars onto the pit lane will for sure be quite tight.

The last time I was there was with the Trans Am Series a few years ago. It was a bit of a challenging event there frankly but they have come a long, long way since then and it should prove to be fun.

It is always a challenge to find a place to stay at a track that is in the middle of nowhere. At the test, we stayed in the condos that are right beside the track between corners 5 and 6. However, they are rented at full pop for this coming weekend and the 52 rooms that IMSA requires have been reserved in Greensboro, North Carolina - only a little over an hour away!! Oh well!

ChumpCar managed to fit 75 teams/cars in Pit Lane at their event there last month for their 24hr event.

Tents and sleeping bags not an option ?

Staff includes the TV production crew, race officials for three series including tech, pit lane, race control staff, safety team staff, pace car team, doctors, timing, registration, hospitality, set up/take down and logistics to name a few of the players. There is a very high level of expectation from sponsors and participants at an event such as this. The money spent by a sponsor to play at this level requires/demands that they be provided services at the same high level. People crawling out of tents in wrinkled shirts just ain't gonna work!!

Professional series, professional presentation.

Re: VIR IMSA/ALMS Weekend

Down 1 ALMS car (31 now) and up 2 GT3 Cup cars (21 now). Holding on the 18 Prototype Lites acrs and that includes a few Canadians in the mix as well.

Its going to be a busy few days ahead with the 4 hour ALMS race wrapping things up Saturday afternnoon. Weather looks great!! Not that long a drive from these here parts if anyone is thinking about heading that way. If you make it, give me a shout for a VIP Guest pass on the house!!!

Re: VIR IMSA/ALMS Weekend

Weather is still in the 80's and sunny. Practice and Qualifying this morning. Lites and Cup each do their Race #1's this afternoon.

Race #2 for both tomorrow with the ALMS race tomorrow afternoon. Heard this morning from the safety team that the #16 Dyson P1 car is now a hybrid - like the Porsche version with the regenerative energy flywheel.

The MX5 Miata Series has possibly the worst schedule I have ever seen. Two Practices yesterday morning, Qualifying this morning at 8:00 AM and their Race tomorrow morning at 8:10 AM! Then pack up and go home. Yucch!

The hotel is 1 1/2 hours from the track - 3 hours of drive time daily! Yesterday, left at 5:30 AM to be at the 7:00 AM Flagger meeting then left the track at 7:00 PM to arrive at the hotel at 8:30 PM. Not complaining but the back side of racing is somewtimes not all that glamourous!!

Re: VIR IMSA/ALMS Weekend

Three days of 80 degree and sunshine; great racing; track records set; record crowds - at one of America's original permanent racing venues, built in the mid-50's.

What a great way to spend a weekend!!

Re: VIR IMSA/ALMS Weekend

Terry I am curious about a reference made during the ALMS race.

They said that a driver was on "Double secret probation" Is this some sort of new stealthy type of punishment

Re: VIR IMSA/ALMS Weekend

Actually, Driver Probations are sent by email to each participant within the respective IMSA series. In addtion, they are posted on the web site as Notices as was this one that was in effect at VIR and continues until Road Atlanta.

http://www.imsaracing.net/2012/alms/...CE%2012-02.pdf

There are no secret probations in IMSA.
