Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta

A week and a bit until the start of testing and all of the other stuff that goes into making the Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta the season-ending place to be! The ALMS race is on Saturday October 22 and has 43 cars entered including a Toyota engined car in P1.

The GT3 Cup by Yokohama has 28 entries including a couple of Canadian drivers while the Prototype Lites has 21 entries with several Canadians driving as well.

Typically, there are a lot of Canadians working or spectating so there are lots of good reasons to be there!

Re: Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta

Now up to 30 Porsche Cup cars and 24 Prototype Lites cars. Still have 43 ALMS entries. Lots of Canadian drivers in each Series.

Also, there is Star Mazda and MX5 Cup there as well so its going to be a very busy week - starting with the ALMS Test Day Monday afternoon.

Let me know if you are going to be there!

Here are the results of the afternoon session. Note that the Delta Wing is showing in P5.

This is a big weekend for it as it will be run on a shorter track (2.5 miles) with elevation compared to its last outing at LeMans (8.5 miles) in June. They have done a lot of testing at Road Atlanta and are committed to building five customer cars for 2013. Performance adjustnents for it to run as a classified car next year will be determined at this event as well.

Re: Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta

Promoter Test Day for the Development Series today.

First up was the Lites Series, GT3 Cup cars are on track now.

Big uplift with the Lites entries. Level 5 has purchased West Cars, the builders of the L2 Class cars, and they have promised an entry of 8 cars for 2013. However, they beat that and actually have 8 cars entered here this week. Great class to run - economical, strong cars, great venues, strong at-track support including a parts truck for 2013. Anyone looking to upsize their program would be well advised to take a look at what a Prototype Lites season would look like.

Re: Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta

Well, we now know what the underside of the Delta Wing looks like! That is what we saw from the windows in Race Control as it came under the bridge airborne and sideways yesterday during the test!

It was passing a GT car on the driver's right and contact was made to its left rear sidepod, turning it sideways and sending it into the air.

All good, drivers all OK and car is good to go as of this morning.

At that point it was running in P6 about 4 seconds off the P1 cars that were turning 1:10 minute laps.

Re: Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta

Perfect weather day today - sunny bright and cool.

Just about to start ALMS Qualifying. The Lites and GT3 Cup races are now complete and the season finished for both. Both have their Awards Banquets tonight and that is when I typically hear about what really happened during the season!!

Re: Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta

Well, a pretty interesting race. If anyone was following and was wondering the reason for the uber long full course yellow after everything seemed to be ready to go back to green, here is the deal. During the wave arounds under the full course yellow done to get everybody in the right order for the restart, Car #055 decided to pass a few extra cars. It is particularly important in a multi-class race to ensure that the order is correct as not doing everything possible to ensure that it is multiplies the error factor within classes as well as the overall standings.

Realizing what Car #055 had done, it took a few extra minutes for Timing and Scoring to sort out where Car #055 had gained advantages during pit stops and all that had gone on during that time period.

Once that was calculated, the race was green flagged and restarted with a penalty - as specified in the Regs for cars that do not follow instruction or procedure during a wave around under FCY - applied under green flag conditions. That penalty was a Stop and Hold for the time equivalent of two of the the fastest lap times in that class.

Just part of the many things that happen behind the scenes during a race that are never seen and rarely understood!! However, all necessary to ensure fairness and that no unfair competitive advantage is gained during an event.
