Street Studs Lost?

Wondering how the fellow street studs made out the first weekend. Rumour was that the new tires would outperform the old and have less loss of studs.

We ran last year and did not replace studs for a couple weekends and tires lasted all year with little to no wear. Yes, some of the holes were damaged.

This year, after just one race - last race on Sunday, one tire had about 14 studs remaining. We lost over 70 on Saturday (four tires) and I am guess 150 on Sunday (six tires).

Have others had the same problem?
Is there anything that can be done - since we are not to modify tires?
If Tirecraft is going to charge us $1 per stud ...?

Thanks,

Team MaNick

Team MaNick:

You are not the only ones who lost studs. I know a couple others who did as well, and Scotty is right.....Jeff is looking into it!

Re: Street Studs Lost?

I'm running a MR2 (RWD) with the new tires and don't think I lost any studs. I'll jack the car up next time I'm up and verify. I know some of the fron't wheel drivers were reporting losing a bunch studs, but not sure if were they were using the new or old tires. Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Re: Street Studs Lost?

Driver control / patience.

Last year - first race of the season... Stefan Haas.. was in the same rabbit... and ALL OVER ME in the AWD GTX... granted he is lighter... but on ice... in grip-limited conditions??? turns out the spectarors said he was driving like a madmon on studs... just flinging the car in there... huge slides.. and lots of right-pedal....

First 3 laps I was staring in my rearview... after that... he started rapidly dropping back... why? lost 50% of his studs! LOL

I watched him on Sat... drove the way he adapted to my the 2nd and 3rd weekends... MUCH cleaner... less drift and less wheelspin!!!

there may have been more wheelspin this weekend with a polished surface... as SS never ran on virgin ice... always a race or 2 after studs... so that may make a diff...

The other issue... is that people didn't "bed them in" the way that Jeff suggests... drive them on the street... or flat-tow them for a few KM's to "set" the studs. These are soft / new tires... maybe a better (softer) compound... gotta flat-tow them to seat them I guess...

FWD cars will overburden the fronts tho... always do... so swapping tires front to rear would be a good idea...

Re: Street Studs Lost?

Happy to report I didn't lose any studs(blue rwd corolla) but watched them very carefully.Rotated them once and tapped the studs back straight and reseated once, still look pretty good compared to most.
Like Miatboi says I think caution is in order with the driving style,I had to try real hard to resist burying the throttle but I think it paid off with all studs still present.
Look forward to hearing what Jeff finds out.

Re: Street Studs Lost?

Seating the studs didn't help for me.

Lost a whole bunch of studs.

I dropped my tires @ Jeff's and he told me that he was going to talk to HANHOOK and see if they can come up with a solution.

I told him that I would be happy with smaller stud as long as the studs stayed in the tire.

Tire management!!! I was on the banks talking to Jeff all weekend.
At times we were sure, safley glasses and possibly vests would
be a good idea If you apex and then just stand on it, we may
get shot with the studs you will spit.
AllGlass #98 lost several studs in the inside lugs, then went down
by about 8 psi. to get them all working.

Re: Street Studs Lost?

Give me 50 laps your way , then 50 my way , I'll be faster !

Yes I am waiting to hear back from Hankook. You can't just chuck it and WFO the throttle on street stud tires. It's all about looking after your equipment.

I will update everybody when I hear back from Hankook.
BTW we did'nt charge for a single stud this weekend ! But if somebody's overdriving the tires next weekend we will.

For the love of Iceracing.

Re: Street Studs Lost?

No no no. Guys, you've got it all wrong. Going easy on the tire isn't the way, just keep you foot buried and slide as much as possible. That way the studs won't have a chance to work their way out as they are making contact with the ground more often. More RPMs is the way to go. I wouldn't lie out of self interest, would I?
Seriously though, I ran practice and the first race on Saturday without looking at my tires, and managed to chuck 8 out of my outside rear. After that, I went through the painstaking process of pounding the studs back in after each race. All that hammering destroyed my wrist, but all those studs learned their lesson after being beaten on, and stayed put.

Re: Street Studs Lost?

Much appreciated, Jeff, you were kind enough to replace the studs I lost when I was foolish and stood on it through a Saturday race. Sunday I concentrated on smooth--was faster (at least placed better) and I don't think I lost any studs. I call it the "learning process".
Interested if Hankook can make em so that we can really lean on them though, I reckon the fun factor would increase....

Re: Street Studs Lost?

On the point of overspinning....

Remember the ice was smooth a silk... there were no Menards running all weekend. There really was no grip.

To those who lost suds: Q: Were you possibly just overspinning your tires due to the conditions? OR maybe driving just too agressively for this class and tire type?

There will be more grip this weekend as Menards will be running and less spinning will be necessary. Other than that As Jeff says it has a lot to do with the driver.

Re: Street Studs Lost?

I just got off the phone with my Hankook rep . He has yet to hear from his tech department. We have been working on the situation since Mon. morning and are confident that we can solve this problem.

If you have tires that need replacement please bring them to the shop this week. It will not be $1.00 per stud , however $15-$20. per tire if a lot of work is required.

Jeff

Re: Street Studs Lost?

One thing we learned this past weekend has to do with tire pressures. We've been running about 25 lbs, and it looked to us like the studs in the center of the tire were being "worked" harder than those on the outside rows. So far, we haven't lost very many studs, but Andrew tries hard not to slide the car or spin the tires very much. So on Saturday morning Jeff and I talked, and he agreed with me that the center studs looked like they were being worked harder than the outside rows, and that maybe we might try lower tire pressures. We did not run in practice, but for the first race, we lowered the pressures by 3 lbs to 22. That certainly had an impact. Actually it worked, but too well. Lost about 8 studs on the outside row on the (most heavily loaded) outside rear tire, and in at least half the instances the stud pocket went too! So, after seeing that, we went right back up in pressure to 25 lbs and the stud loss mostly stopped for the rest of the weekend. I dunno what the rest of you are seeing, but thought I'd share what we found.
