RE yellow flag

Okey as a marshall what is a steady yellow and a rocked yellow Gunter.
I the rocked on the corner where the incident is or on all corners please let the marshalling groups know what you really want as a marshall, somewhat of a organizer and someone that has been around for a long time this is not very clear

Both MMS and CRCA are well aware of this change and support it. I am sure that when you next attend a prerace marshal meeting it will be explained.

Re: RE yellow flag

Is it also going to be thoroughly explained to all the drivers?

BTW what would be wrong with having an explanation in this thread on this forum? Is it such a secret that non-drivers or marshals should not be made aware of the use of a "rocked" yellow? Would it also not be of value to have marshals & drivers know the procedure in advance so they have time to digest it & ask clarifying questions at the pre-race meeting?

Re: RE yellow flag

I don't believe there is a lot of mystery to this nor is it intended to keep anyone in the dark about meaning.

When a situation requires a steady yellow by the definition of the captain/senior on a corner, the yellow flag will be displayed the same way, but with a rocking motion.

For years we have known that a drivers vision picks up motion first then identifies the colour. That was the reason F1 went from redlights out and green lights on at the start to just the reds going out, the drivers were reacting to the lights going out and were being penelized for jumping a start because the green had not come yet.

This is also similar to blue flagging in that many experienced blue flaggers recognized that drivers responded to a blue that was rocked rather than just being shown a steady when a faster car was approaching.

This should not be difficult to apply in most situations and yes there has been some discussion regarding certain specific applications ie when other flags are being displayed at the same time, as this method will require the flagger to use both hands on one flag, leaving it difficult to handle another flag. As in past years when handed a difficult situation, most flaggers figure out away to get the information across to the drivers.

That is our main purpose as flaggers, to get information to the driver about something ahead of him/her that they may not be able to see. Our secondary function is to get that information to the control tower so that the powers that be can make decisions as necessary to the safe running of an event.

Re: RE yellow flag

I have been around for a few years and know what a flaggers do. I know that we as flaggers do on use flags in our own way depending on the incident and have done it myself.
I also addapt to new flagging procedures quickly as I do flag SCCA events to.

Re: RE yellow flag

I've already been doing this for years with all manner of flags, including Debris/White/Dbl Yellow and Single Steady. It's not really anything new, it's just being formalized. It really changes nothing except that as a driver, you'll have a better chance at seeing the Single Steady Yellow I'm holding out, whereas before, you may have missed it because I was just holding it and not moving. I used to do this with Dbl Yellow, when I worked assistant start for Grand-AM Rolex a few years ago.
