2010 Autocross Rule Book Understanding

Hey Everyone!

I just finished reading the rule book post here & if I read it right, my co-driver (9yr old son) should be able to ride in competitive runs this year instead of just "fun" runs at the end of the event.
Am I RIGHT? I've got one very excited boy on my hands.

That is correct. My 9-year old son is very excited too!

Really? I thought it was 9 for fun runs and 13 or something for comp runs...ahh well...there's another 9 year old around these parts who's excited too!

Maybe we should add a "Junior co-driver class" or something?

It was argued that there is no difference between a fun-run and a competition run so why should the passenger rule be different. So the rule is changing.

BTW said 9 year olds still need to find a helmet that fits properly!

Yes, this is very important.

The other thing is that the child can only co-drive with their legal parent or guardian.

I have a little cousin who would love to go for a lap. If he's less than 13 his parent/guardian needs to be driving?

I've also got a nephew who is turning 9 this year and would grin from ear to ear for a week if he got to go for a run with his uncle! Tell me this is allowed! lol

Re: 2010 Autocross Rule Book Understanding

I recently asked for clarification of this, here's what I received:

18 year olds sign their own consent form
under 18 need the ASN parental consent completed and signed by a parent - this is annual.

Minors must be 9 years old and up, and must have a properly fitting appropriate helmet, make sure the seatbelt fits.

It is in the rule book 3.6.10 if you like more clarification.

Always thought it was weird a 9 year old could ride along in a wheel to wheel ice race but had to be 12 for a 40 second autox run.

Nephew means you are not parent or guardian. The parent or guardian must sign the annual form. So if comes with you that means you'll have to download the form and take it to the parents to sign. Other than that, bear in mind I'll be checking helmet fit.

My son is absolutely dying for the WOSCA event on Sunday to come around -- it's like Christmas for him.

Light standards are harder than snowbanks (usually ).

---

What is perhaps interesting for the larger discussion is that the helmet standards applicable to children, e.g., Snell CM, aren't allowed in the current rulebook. (Adult Snell helmet standards like M and SA do not apply to children - the helmets can be too heavy for pre-adolescent bones/muscles, and the retaining strap could be in a sub-optimal position for a child's head as opposed to an adult's.)
