Sorry. I really don't see what all the fuss is about here!!
Some Mini drivers on a road trip..a few of them
get a speeding ticket for going 30k over the limit!!
So what..people get caught speeding every day.
One driver had his "radar detector" confiscated and fined!!

Yes they got trapped. so what!! That's why their
called "speed traps" keep to the speed limit
and the OPP won't bother you.

The police setting up a media event out of it was a bit of a db move but I don't get the fuss either. They were on an organized cruise, at least a few of the members were clearly well over the posted speed limit, they got tagged. I'm not sure why they expected the police to INFORM them they were going to take a look at their convoy. I'm also not sure why they seem to think that informing them in advance of the run should get them a pass on driving over the limit? Did they think they were notifying the OPP so they could stay out of their way?

The representation on the news coverage is a whole other thing, but thats not really the main beef of the posting.

If you are speeding and get caught, suck it up and pay the penalty. None of that is the problem here. Some were speeding, they were charged, big deal.

It is unclear how 3-4 people could be picked out of 30 cars, and others not in the convoy that were moving faster. Still not an issue if the ones charged were the ones speeding. So what if the other guy was not also charged.

What is disapointing is why the OPP choose to make this a big deal. The media was called to get them out to the location, before the convoy arrived. Then the OPP merged onto the highway at a slower speed to block and pick out who they wanted. The video and pictures seem to be pretty clear that this was a major pileup just waiting to happen. Why did they have to do this in such an unsafe manner.

The second problem was how the media portrayed this event. There were statements made about the speeding Minis, then there were general statements made about all the cars stopped on Saturday for 50 over. There were children in the car so Childrens Aid Society were called and cars were towed. Pretty extreme actions. On top of it, these statements were made by the media while they showed the Mini club being pulled over so it was made to look like it was this Mini Club charity event that had done all this. Not at all the case, and not even the same day. Very poor reporting. I understand that the footage has been pulled from the stations web site. Wonder why, damage is done.

If all we had was the story to go off of, it would sound (potentially) like a big of whining on the Mini drivers' part, however, based on the PHOTO, I actually can't help but SEE how the OPP were very specifically gunning for the PACK of Minis . All of the signs just point to "staged" media event.

Dirty pool.

However, you can't feel sorry for somebody doing ~30-over who made the effort to inform the OPP of their presense beforehand.
