Yup-both to what Marsh and Cliff said.

History:
We lobbied to get a simplified structure into the series through the adaption of a street tire class. Originally T1 and T2 were the only street tire classes, and we found that it excluded some of the popular cars, like 2 door sports cars, high powered 4 door cars (Subaru STI's), cars with tires larger than 245 etc. So STU was created for the "catch all" class and a pax was determined to see where it would fit.

In short:
Simpler class structure
Easier to particpate in without the complex point schedule
More neubie friendly (as far as able to class their car, without competing in the real classes)
A great entry point, prior to purchasing the new R888 GGG compound (ooops did I say that)
Perception of not competing against the "big dogs"
Allows for easier classifications of "walk in's" on street tires

As far as criteria for success is concerned, it was in terms of participants in the ST catagory. From the results of the individual "non series" registrations, it seems to have worked.

In picton day 1: 21 Street Tire Resigrations
Picton Day 2: 32 Street Tire Registrations
TLMC: 28 Street Tire Registrations
HADA: 18 Street Tire Registrations

Most of those were walk'ins.. I'd say it worked!!

Ahh makes sense, thanks for the info guys. This aids my everlasting pursuit of motorsport lazyness.
