2010 Tires and records stats
So last year, there were a number of posts making our tire rules a bit of a controversy.
For the purposes of the Toyo tires championship, ChrisP went about recording tire data used by almost every competitor for every event. The total number of tire entries totalled 322. Here are some stats: 322 event entrants this year 61% of entries this year were on street category tires (21% on r-comps, not including premium-R) 82% of those street tires used in 2010 are categorized by tire rack to be 'Extreme performance street tires' their highest street tire designation. 13% of street tires would be in a lower but still high performance category 5% of street tire entries were lower performance/all season type tires. Of the two lower brackets (in italics), not a single competitor using those tires competed in enough events to place in the series (only 3 of those people actually came to 4 or 5 events). The highest performance bracket of street tires which 82% of users belong to make up 47% of the TOTAL number of entries in 2010. You can see that high performance street tires were certainly the most popular mod that people did this year! Although some say that the original intent of the street tire rule was to satisfy the OEM car/tires, e.g. walk ins, it simply doesn't apply to reality. It's obvious that people competing in our series want to run the best street tires available. We could make a fourth tire category but it would only satisfy a few people (~9) who only come to our series to compete in 1 or 2 events a year. As for lap records broken this year: 49 records broken this year. 58% of them on street tires, 31% of them on R, and 10% on premium/slicks Statistically speaking, the R-compounds actually faired better by count of records per entry. But that statistic doesn't show the entire picture. Instead, I've calculated what the expected records are for each track depending on the class and which of the records broken perform better than average. This removes uncompetitive lap records. Of the 49 records broken this year, 26 of them were above average. Of the ones that exceeded the average lap record, 73% were on street tires, and 23% were on -R and 4% on Premium/slicks. Here are the numbers next to each other: % of tyre type participating (% of records in 2010 that over achieved) Street - 61% (73%) R - 21% (23%) PremiumR - 18% (4%) Interesting stuff indeed. Now I wonder if more or less people will be using street tires next year. Last edited by bsclywilly; 11-02-2010 at 07:33 PM. Reason: tire record numbers error corrected |

You can compare to non premium R's, which were only used by 21% of competitors, yet set 31% of the competitive track records this year. According to this data, it shows that competitors on non-premium R's are outperforming street tires.

Re: 2010 Tires and records stats
Sorry guys I f'd up a couple numbers. ChrisP pointed out I had AndyP on R's rather than streets.
The new numbers are as follows and show that streets set more competitive lap records. The error was a difference of two records that Andy set. Total records out of 49: Street - 58% R - 31% Premium - 10% Typre popularity (Total over achieving records out of 26): Street - 61% (73%) R - 21% (23%) Premium - 18% (4%) |

Re: 2010 Tires and records stats
Neat facts. But where's the fun factor stats? Sliding a car through a corner on grippy tires is way more fun than sliding a car through a corner on slippy tires. More$$= More
<<-- I don't have stats to back that up though.

Re: 2010 Tires and records stats
Geez, no data or stats? We need Smiles per Mile, Miles.
How about Grins by Grip coefficient? The WI or Wee! Index = number of Wees! per Lap divided by Total Laps?

Re: 2010 Tires and records stats
I think Miles is referring to the Wee that one experiences during one's laps, which may result in spontaneous grinning, possibly driver cleanup and/or vehicle repairs, depending on the degree of Wee.

Re: 2010 Tires and records stats
let's get mr h-bomb back in the series next year on r-comps (or premium r's) and see if he can still win his class! I bet he can do it! but there's only one way we'll ever know.....
