Re: reason to remove hay bails for lapping

Title should be 'mandatory training before being allow to do lapping days'. The haybails are secondary to the out and out lack of self control I see at *some* lapping events. This is the dark side to the explosion of lapping day events in Ontario. It will all get fixed after a few people die.

I'm sure Helmets will soon be mandatory at these events... i'm stunned they arent already

Are those bails always there? or is that a CSCS thing?

yes, the hay bails have always been there

most people, however, don't take a line that would drive them into the wall.. although it's very easy to come close!

havign said that, i think using hay bails is a bad idea, every time i come to TMP someone reminds everyone else to not hit the hay bails because you WILL flip, guess that's true!

Re: reason to remove hay bails for lapping

bails are always there to some degree, but its pretty far off the line.

CSCS is a circus, Im surprised this doesn't happen more often to be honest. No helmets required (less than 10% have one), and a single guy running the whole thing for 60+ lappers, much of which have never been on a track before.

Re: reason to remove hay bails for lapping

Aren't the hay bails mostly there because of motorcycle riders? I remember seeing them at SMP as well, but most of the time on the other side of the wall when we are there.

Re: reason to remove hay bails for lapping

Does anyone know if the driver is okay? Hope he was in the 10% that did wear a helmet.

I still don't really understand what happened. The corner exit looked slow. The car wasn't out of shape at all. Did he forget that he was driving a JDM right hander?

Re: reason to remove hay bails for lapping

We had a Solosprint event at Shannonville about 10 years ago - where two (2) seperate cars hit the hay bails on the front straight and rolled. (with experienced drivers)

The Bails were left over from a motorcycle event the previous day and were removed (after the second roll over). It became common practice and CASC-OR policy NEVER to leave them on track during an event.

Normally, if a car touches the wall, it bounces off - but with the hay bails in place - it can climb up and launch.

The video that you posted was exactly how it happened back then. I remember seeing it from the tower.

Re: reason to remove hay bails for lapping

Ask me how I know, but haybales are bad news at track events.

The tire brushes up against the bag that the bale is in, and it grabs the tire causing it to climb the bale. The rest is as you see it. I don't have a vid from my event but it launched my car.
With the bales there, it also cuts down on available track space on corner exit which causes an issue.

That guy hit the bales pretty square, but he probably would have only brushed the wall if the bales weren't there.

That's right Andre - now I remember. Wasn't your Miata the second car at the Shannonville event that I spoke of above?

The drifting is even more insane, spectators just a few metres off track. I have no idea how CSCS gets insurance for their events.

I'd wager on "don't ask, don't tell"

none of these events get insurance... you should now that, they only get track insurance.
