Drivers Saftey Equipment

Hello All

After a few years (5) away from the track things look promising for the spring. I do need some help from whomever can answer the following two questions for me regarding drivers safety equipment.

1 Driver restraint systems
7.0 VALIDITY 7.1.1 Restraint systems meeting SFI standards shall bear a dated SFI spec label. The certification indicated by this label shall expire on Dec 31st of the 2nd year after the date indicated by the label.
It appears that the date of manufacture for my belts is is June 2013, therefore based on the above they expire(d) on December 31st 2015? I did contact leaf racewear and it appears that I can re-web them as it is a camlock system, is that ok?

2 HANS device (picture also attached)
It appears that my HANS manufacture date is 2002, I see that there is a re certified process for the HANS, is this a requirement as I do not see it any reg.

Thanks everyone I appreciate your responses and or help.

HANs is the same. FIA or SFI dates. Its the straps on the system they replace. Bicknells bought CSC Racing and their web site has info on recertifying one.

Re: Drivers Saftey Equipment

FYI, the SFI labels are changing this year. They will not have the date punched, but will instead have the expiry date printed.

Re: Drivers Saftey Equipment

Thank you for spending the time in responding however I am still not certain of what is required.

Indeed my belts are expired, will re-webbing them suffice and meet all tech and safety requirements?

Additionally HANS, yes there is a re-certify process but what is the criteria, after a crash, damage etc.. or simply 5 years gone by time to re-certify?

If anyone from CASC tech could answer it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

Eugene, I typed you a rely but it accidentally got deleted before i could submit it.
Let me try again.
Will the rewebbed belts have a current SFI "tag" ? If yes they're OK, if no tag they're not
OK
Your HANS wiIll need the tethers replced as a MINIMUM.
What "brand" is the HANS and what approval did it come with (SFI or FIA)?

Re: Drivers Saftey Equipment

HI Dave,
Thanks for your response. Yes re-webbing will include the new SFI tag as well. I have confirmed this.

As for my HANS it has an FIA sticker. The brand or manufacturer is "Hubbard Downing Inc?"

Let me know if there is different criteria with SFI vs FIA HANS

Thanks a bunch!

Eugene

Re: Drivers Saftey Equipment

Eugene, for sure your tethers are expired. I haven't found anything about the expiry date of an actualHANS device.
I suggest you call Bicknells about new tethers and whether or not the device has
"aged out" as it is 16 years old.

The FIA labelled HANS devices as far as I know do not expire. Changing the tethers to sliding ones is a great upgrade while you're at it!

HMMMM.....so the FIA HANS does not expire? I do not disagree with anyone that it is a good idea to get it re certified and I probably will but I just wish it was clearly listed somewhere and take out the guessing.

Curious to know if indeed a FIA HANS device never expires.

Thanks again.....

Re: Drivers Saftey Equipment

In case it helps I did contact Bicknells, and the are unaware of the rules around an FIA HANS.

SFI is every 5 years. If I do get my HANS device re-certified by Bicknell's an SFI tag will be placed on it putting it in scope of every 5 year expiry.

In this case it I may just get it re-certified as I am a little in the grey zone on this one.

It's up to you, but in every rule book I've seen, FIA labeled HANS do not expire and do not need to be recertified. Replace the straps and go racing. You can buy the sliding tethers from various vendors.

Edit: If you DO get it recertified, make sure they do NOT remove the existing FIA label or cover it in any way ... it's happened before.

Re: Drivers Saftey Equipment

Eugene, maybe that is why I can't find anything about an expiry of an FIA approved
actual HANS device. Be my guest and see what you can find on the FIA site.
